Marathon Weekend 2024

We were watching United direct flights and ended up booking about a month ago cuz they dropped down to about $520 round trip. They started at almost $800 but we keep an eye out and will rebook if they go down more. We are planning a 4th of July trip to Legoland Florida with a day or two at Disney so we could put any vouchers towards that.

I am sorry if this has been asked before somewhere int the 131 pages... but I didn't have the courage to read it all!
Do spots for Marathon Weekend ever open up? Any way to receive an alert if that is the case?

They do open up on occasion. You'll want to follow rundisregstatus on Twitter or telegram.

And if you get an alert act fast, they fill fast.

There's been no activity for MW since May 4. I'm wondering if they're collecting a bunch of open registrations and then do a big opening sometime in the near future?

Just finalized our travel out to WDW and hotels. Since we were originally planning on flying out on January 2nd, missing the first day back of work, I figured we might as well go out earlier and celebrate New Years at WDW. We have always talked about spending NYE at DL or WDW. With the timing of Marathon Weekend this year, it just made sense. Heading out to WDW on December 30th on Southwest. Split hotel stay. 12/30 through 1/2, staying offsite in Flamingo Crossing at the TownPlace Suites. Then on January 2nd, checking into Caribbean Beach Resort for the rest of the trip.

That is the problem with Marathon Weekend being so early in the calendar year, I keep turning it into a longer (and more expensive) trip  I don't plan to do New Years since I added on coast to coast, but I still have my two nights booked at the Dolphin for the 30th and 31st, just in case...

We did the same last year. We drove and decided we didn’t want to be in the car for 2 1/2 days right before Dopey so we bumped back a couple of days but then decided we did want to travel over NYE so wen ended up checking into CSR on the 30t. We didn’t set foot in a park until the 2nd and we had a blast!

This year we’re doing to opposite and arriving on Jan 3rd, doing MW, heading to Hilton Head for a few days then back to WDW until…..my 50th birthday on the 25th!

This is kind of what happened with our trip too! Originally we we going to fly down Monday or Tuesday (early morning flight for the latter) but once I started looking at flights, it was significantly cheaper to fly down on Sunday. And of course, since we are booked so far in advance, our flight down to Orlando has already changed, and if it gets any earlier than it is now, DH has stated that we will use the flight change option to go on Saturday instead. This is because an earlier flight time will pretty much require a hotel stay, and we would rather extend our stay where it's warm.

Rental cars are a whole other thing. We are staying at a hotel with a free airport shuttle (and is within walking distance of several restaurants) for NYE because it's currently about $160 more to rent a car from NYE-9th than NYD-9th. And DH isn't interested in a trip that long and having to rely on busses for everything.

Yea, I definitely don't think we will be heading the parks everyday before the races start. I figured definitely on NYE and staying late into the evening. NYD will be a sleep in and lounge around day. Maybe head over to Universal for a day before the races start. Then later in the week our daughter and her fiancé are coming in and then we will head over to the parks.

Ok, you guys are terrible influences! 😁

I checked my flight to Orlando, and it's actually cheaper to fly in the night before at the end of the day on the 2nd rather than first thing on the 3rd. So we're going to go down that night and stay at some random hotel in Disney Springs before moving to AKV. At least that way, we can get some real sleep that night.

Good Morning runDisney All-Stars! It is time for Sunday’s are for Disney.

Today’s question: As we approach the Galloway/runDisney Training plan kickoffs it is time to share training plans. Who do you follow? What are you planning?

My Answer: I follow the plans of my PT. But we are planning to shift things quite a bit. I will continue to follow Galloway run/walk/run principles, but I will not be following a Galloway plan. My major shift is that I will be leaving mileage based training and trying out a time based training plan. This will be very new for me and I suspect it will become tougher later in the training plan when I want to measure success of a work out based on specific mileage covered. But I am excited to switch it up and I think it will be good for me. I am on a 4 week running hiatus currently (two weeks down and two to go!) and then I have two weeks build up before beginning my 16 week plan for MCM at the end of October. Right after MCM I will take a short break and then momic some of the Galloway Dopey Simulation weeks at least in terms of four consecutive days of running with increasing distances. Otherwise I will continue to follow a plan to maintain my MCM fitness working towards Dopey. Have a good week all!

Question around bus transportation post marathon. I’ve never stayed at BLT or DWL/CCV for race weekend. I am curious what the bus ride looks back to both resorts post marathon. Are there any issues post race? I know you can monorail back to BLT but have to walk through EPCOT. Curious if it is pretty seamless with bus transportation or if road closures mess everything up.

Older post and I saw a couple of others replied too but I’ll chime in as well. I was at CR this past Marathon race weekend. CR, WL, and FW share a bus. The order post race is FW, WL, then CR. As a CR guest it’s a little long/boring having to make all those stops, but it’s not all that bad. The third party bus drivers are, shall we say, often a bit more aggressive with their speed than WDW bus drivers.

Post Marathon we didn’t encounter any notable traffic but post Half we did as residual traffic from the earlier World Drive closure was still impacting the turn from Vista Blvd to World Drive, if I remember correctly.

I had debated monorail or bus post Marathon and opted for the bus, but if I had to do it again i would probably go monorail. No particular logistical reason other than it would have been more fun, kept me moving, etc.

SAFD: I am trying to figure out (quickly) what plan to follow for NYC Marathon. I'm at 21 weeks out and so need to make a decision soon. My major requirements are no more than 4 runs/week, not too high mileage, and 1-2 "non-easy" runs/week. I thought I would do the Boston Level 1 plan, but the hill training aspect incorporated into it gives me pause. I looked at Higdon Novice 2, but it doesn't seem to offer much non-easy running. NYC has a free plan--but I don't think it's for me. Just a look at the RPE chart made me run away screaming--if a workout is too subtle, I'm not going to get it.

So right now, who knows. Open to suggestions.

I’m not sure how it compares but NYC’s elevation changes kinda surprised me, knew I was in for trouble with the bridges but there were other portions in Manhattan that still haunt me. Not the worst idea to have a bit of hill work, it’s the one thing I regret not having done more of when I was training for it (if i do it again next year I’ll likely put in more runs in Central Park).

SAFD:
I have been using my Stryd (power footpad) plans for the past few marathon training cycles and they have worked well for me. They have recently switched to Steve Palladino plans. These plans are a little less mileage/time, but have more intensity. I plan to use this plan for my Berlin Marathon training. I’ll see how it goes, and then decide whether it will work for Dopey training. I usually have a marathon in the middle of Dopey training (weekend before Thanksgiving), and I’m not sure that will work with this plan. I might be searching for a new plan at the end of September.

SAFD: The heavy lifting portion of my Dopey training will likely take place this summer using a heavily modified @DopeyBadger plan. I have a 40 miler in early September followed by bridging into a 24 hour race in mid-October. Once those are safely out of the way, I'll be joining my normal @DopeyBadger training plan "already in progress" in early November for the run in to Marathon Weekend.

haha yes, neighborhood names like "Washington Heights" and "Murray Hill" are actually descriptive! Not sure NY Marathon goes through either of those neighborhoods but just saying, there are definitely hills. Ask anybody who has tried roller blading around Central Park...
