Marathon Weekend 2023

SAFD: Does drinking coquito replace the taper mileage? If so, I’m doing well and feeling fine.

I had a very small medical procedure so I’m sidelined until Wednesday. I am cleared to walk on Monday so I may walk a few miles on Monday and Tuesday. Actually, let’s be honest. I’ll probably run on Monday.

SAFD:

Taper is going well! I’ve dropped my mileage to 80% of last week’s peak, but it doesn’t feel that extreme. TBH, this week’s 40 miles is still more than I was running just a couple of months ago, so while it is *less* it isn’t really *rest*. If anything, so far I feel a little bit *less* snappy and energetic than I have recently, but my pace/HR data is right where it should be.

I have no concerns about injury so far — a HUGE improvement from last year when I was sidelined for four weeks with tendinitis — except for this morning when I seriously wondered whether I could get frostbite on my nose after a few hours’ run. 🥶

SAFD: my body has been fighting me recently, with something different feeling cranky at different times. I might alter my training plan a bit to lower the intensity of the runs, to make sure I don’t aggravate anything so close to race weekend. I’m also a ball of nerves, since I haven’t gotten to train as hard as I would’ve like due to the aforementioned cranky body.

I guess this as good a time as any to pull out the “Hay is in the Barn” post :)

Those of you who have been here a while will remember Coach Charles used to post this heading into marathon weekend. With the races fast approaching and people getting anxious about how they'll do, I figured I’d bring it back and help calm some nerves. You’ve done all the hard work. Now it’s time to enjoy the fruits of that labor.

The Hay is in the Barn
I used to hear this weekly back in my high school days (and yes there were high schools back then). Coach would walk in Thursday after practice and tell us that the Hay was in the barn boys, enjoy the fruit of our labors. If you think about it, he was correct. We have all spent the training season growing, harvesting, baling and stacking our hay for future use. There is not much more that any of us can do from now through race day. Seriously, a marathon is not an event that you can cram for. I know there are a few who can simply head out and run one, but most of us need to spend the next couple weeks allowing the body to absorb the training from the last few months. Many do not understand that the work (running, lifting, etc) is not where strength and improvements come from; rather, its the recovery periods just after the work where they occur. Its happens as a result of the muscle repairs those tiny little micro tears that occur with all workouts.

Its taper time... Yes we do need to be out and running. Taper is seriously misunderstood by many runners. It is not a time of kicking back and not doing anything. Taper is a reduction of training volume. Volume = intensity x time. In many camps it is thought that intensity should remain high through taper. I am in that camp, at least for most runners. Distances, ie time, are reduced dramatically while the mid week intensities remain just as high as previous work.

The exception to the above... If you are injured or ill, I would just recover. Do not run or otherwise aggravate your injury. Give the joint time to heal up. If ill, its still ok to run, but keep it light. The general rule of thumb is that if your cold or illness is above the neck, head out for your run; if in the chest or below the neck stay in.

NERVOUS?
It is normal. Remember how nervous you were the first time you entered a race. These are the same nerves. If this is your first event, it is very normal to have a set of nerves during this period. Tapering tends to bring the nerves out as you are not working out near as long as you were just two weeks ago. Trust me, even the most seasoned runners have similar nerves. Maybe we just hide them better, or understand them better. But watch as you are in the corral on race morning. Folks are burning off nervous energy in various ways. Make a pledge to use your nerves to help get you to and through the race. Once the gun goes off and you just hit the point where you are sweating, your case of nerves will soon disappear.
Yes I always have nerves. Now that I have a new Garmin there’s a new feature where I get comments. I got one right before my 10k two weeks ago and it said “you seem more stressed than normal.” 😂🤪

SAFD: Being completely transparent, my whole training cycle feels like it's been a taper. I have been super busy and absolutely have not prioritized training like I should have. That said, I feel good when I do run and I know mentally I can do it since I finished Dopey last year. I also know it's going to hurt as the races get longer and recovery will be tough, and that's my own damn fault.

This week should be quiet as we're not traveling and have no family coming in to town, so I'll be able to do my runs and cross-training and get my costumes finished. All good.

8 degrees with a wind chill of -10, fleece-lined leggings, fleece-lined long sleeve shirt (thank you marine corps marathon), fleece jacket, puffy jacket, 2 pairs of gloves, hat, scarf, extra thick socks, but got my run done! I was actually very warm except my face. Considered just skipping this weekend, but thought I would at least try and give myself permission to turn around and go home whenever I wanted, but got it all in.

SAFD:

I LOVE the taper. I have been in Taper since Monday and forgot how blissful it is. When I am in the depth of the training block, I tend to keep my head down and not think too far ahead. That is the only way I can get through the training.

My taper is going well. I have been stuck on a treadmill for the past few weeks due to Tundra outside. Today is the first break in the weather and I am excited to get outside again.

Stay healthy and Safe out there. See you at the 5k start in 11 days!

I also gave myself permission to turn around and go home. And I did! Got 2.75 miles of a planned 5 in. I'm not prepared for the cold here in Texas!

SAFD: sure, let’s call my non-training a “taper”! 😂 My body is doing better with less running, more flowy stuff like ballet, yoga, and Pilates - not at all my usual taper.

32* with a 25* wind chill at 9am here in FL… I wore a tank, thermal long sleeve, wool jacket, thermal pants, knit hat, thick Buff, and mittens - aiming to be on the warm side of comfortable. My top half was just right and my legs never got warm over 8 miles. That wind was no joke! I filled my insulated handheld bottle with hot water and that was so nice for 2 miles before it turned cold! Clif Shots turn the approximate consistency of kindergarten paste in the cold, FYI.

Got out this morning for the planned 8 miles on both days this weekend. That was probably the coldest run I have ever done. I think it was 25 degrees. I got the badge on my Garmin for doing a run below freezing temp. Pretty good run despite the conditions.

Eight days of running left. Another 8 tomorrow, three 5 milers during the week, and then two 8’s again next weekend. Then it’s time to pack up and head to Orlando!

Reading these reports of y'all in your temps of 20s or 30s and "complaining" of the cold makes me laugh. Today was the warmest it's been here in three days and it was 2, with a windchill of -21. I think by Monday we'll make it to double digits. But on the bright side, only 9 runs left before the 5k, single digits!!!

SAFD I did my last "hard" run of 7.5 miles on Thursday night and nailed my times (okay, I was a little fast, but that's better than slow). It was originally scheduled for today, but considering we've been under blizzard warnings - and up to 70 mph wind gusts - since yesterday morning, moving it up was a good call. I have three more short runs (assuming we finally get dug out by Monday or Tuesday) and a 5-miler next weekend.

It took almost two weeks from my last simulation, but my feet finally feel better. I didn't have any pain while running on Thursday and just a little bit afterward, but that was probably because I skipped my cool down because I had some last minute shopping before the weather hit. My back is pretty tight at times, but shoveling for the dogs to go out and keeping the furnace vents clear probably isn't helping. If it doesn't loosen up this coming week, I might schedule a last minute appointment with the chiropractor before I leave.

I've been getting some quality sleep which makes me happy. If I manage to get to Florida not already sleep deprived, I will be thrilled.

All in all, I'm continuing to check the boxes in spite of a few bumps (um, stupid historic snowstorms) along the way.

SAFD: I’m not totally sure I believe in tapering, but mostly because I do the bare minimum of training anyway so there’s not much to taper from. I always do 3-6 miles twice during the week, and then a weekend long run that I add a mile to each week til I get to 20. My peak weekly mileage this training cycle topped out at 27. So I’ll keep doing my regular weekday runs but drop my long run next weekend to 13. This has worked for me 3x so far, though running has felt harder and been more painful most of this year generally. I know the mental part is important so I’m *trying* not to stress over it (ha!), though I think I can finally let my breath out after my 20 yesterday because no injuries have shown up at the 36 hour mark 🎉 Now I can actually get excited and pack! I looooove packing.

SAFD: I’m doing a (slightly modified) Higdon Dopey plan and amazingly for me, haven’t missed a mile since September. After aggravating an old hamstring issue, I pulled back on the pace in my mid-week runs in early November and it’s made a difference. Today was the last long-ish run (12 mi) and I ended up doing the last 3 at a solid 10k pace and felt great. I’m the only one of four in our house who hasn‘t come down with some sort of crud in the last week so I’m hoping it passes me by or works it way out in the next week. I have 7 easy miles during the upcoming week and a MAF 5 miles next Saturday to gauge how things have progressed. This is only my second MW, my first Dopey, and the first time running with my wife (5k & half) so I’m just looking forward to enjoying the time.

Happy taper, all, and we’ll see you in FLA!

SAFD: I also LOVE a taper! Usually by the time it rolls around, I am ready to be done with the training cycle. Despite my tendinitis, I didn’t lose a lot of time. I only missed 1 week entirely, that was a short week anyway because of thanksgiving, and a week to bring the mileage back up. I build in a buffer week towards the end of my plans to allow some flexibility and this is the first time I’ve ever had to use it. But, that meant I could get my last 16 miler in without encroaching on my taper. I’m nervous obviously as it’s my first marathon/Dopey. But not freaking out. And really looking forward to some shorter runs over these last couple of weeks.

Should I be concerned I haven’t received a single email from Disney since registering on that crazy day.

Safd:
I just started a training plan this week for Boston, but it allows for me doing Goofy over WDW weekend. So I think I may have a couple extra off days over the next 2 weeks, but mileage is still relatively high with some workouts. I just need to stay injury free.

I tested out my half marathon costume today on the treadmill. Ran a little over 4 miles with no issues. It’s comfortable enough, but I’ll definitely get warm.
