Marathon Weekend 2023

Oh wow, now I want a different sort of runDisney event, one that's based on time, not distance! Like maybe have an overnight race at Epcot, looping World Showcase, and rather than a specific distance, make it an 8 hour challenge, midnight to 8AM. Some of us might run our first ultras that way!

Genius! Sign me up!

Those types of races have increased a lot in popularity. We had a few time based events around here pre-pandemic but the were much more popular last year and clones of the Backyard Ultra are everywhere. I'd but up for something like this. Since the Springtime Surprise changes every year they don't even have to find a new weekend, just make it the headline event one year. If they have it in Epcot and keep a few of the food booths open for the runner's crew they would even make some cash off it. They would need to limit the number of non-runners per runner of course but I think this is one that would be a great new event idea.

Yup, we have a good number of them around here too (Boston). There's one called the Soul Searching Solstice Run that happens every year on the winter solstice. If I recall correctly, it goes from sunrise to sunset, since it's the shortest day of the year.

SAFD:

Good Morning runDisney All-Stars! So we are less than a week from the Spring Surprise Weekend, and some of us will be adding to our medal and shirt collections. So in honor, today’s question asks what do you do with your race shirts and medals? Share a picture is you like!

My answer: I have taken over our office at home, making the closet my running clothes, shoes and gear spot and then taking up a wall with two medal racks and other running stuff. I reuse all my running shirts as workout shirts and keep a few of my favorites as weekend wear. Having done a number of runDisney challenges I have accumulated a lot of race shirts, some much more comfortable than others…. But I like to use the long sleeve shirts as pj’s or under work clothes in the winter for a little warmth. Oh, and I always wear my favorites at Disney when we go on vacation whether a runDisney Weekend or not.

Here is my medal rack. I still have room! For my first marathon though I want to get it framed, so it this marathon 2023 will not be going on here. 657845

Ohh also I got my new shoes and tried them on my first long run this weekend. It took a while since i had to wait for them to order them since I needed a wide. So far l like them. My heel did not hurt at all, so yeah! Anyone else have these?

SAFD: my shirts for now are in a hot mess stacked in my closet

medals I have so many both disney and non accumulated in the last seven years that I have my more recent ones hanging on my wall and the rest individually bagged up and placed in my 2020 wine & dine virtual box under my bed

I have three medal racks with one specifically for Disney. I then wear the shirts on the weekends until I have enough for a shirt quilt. My mom quilts and made my first one. She’s even said she’ll make a second one when I have enough. Right now I don’t want any virtual race shirts in that quilt, which means I can keep wearing one that is SO soft!

SAFD: For the marathon and challenges that were "firsts" (first marathon, Goofy and Dopey) I have the medals framed from one of the vendors that used to be at the expo. The rest of my medals go on a medal rack in the home gym. As it gets full, I pull down the older ones and donate them to Medals for Mettle.

Race shirts gets worn. First for everyday use or workouts (depending if cotton or not), then either donated or used for messy projects around the house.

SAFD:
I’ve kept a very few special shirts - my first marathon, the epic inaugural SW Darkside races, first Dopey - but the rest I’ve either sold with their corresponding medals or used as throwaways for later races. I hate the fit and feel of the recent rD shirts, so unlikely I’ll keep any of them.

I have a bunch of medals in a box, ones I earned before figuring out there’s a resale market for them. I kept the really special ones - like all of my marathon and Dopeys - and recently hung them off the curtain rod of my office. Everything else goes straight to eBay to fund the next race if my budget is tight, or to donate the $$ to charity if I can swing it.

I’m just not very attached to stuff: the experience does it for me!

SAFD:

I've donated most of my race shirts, keeping only those from the Peachtree Road Race (which I use for daily wear) and a very few others if I like the fit.

Most of my medals are in a box to be sent for recycling. I've kept the medals from Disney marathon and half marathon races and a few other meaningful non-Disney ones. I've pretty much quit running races simply because I don't want to deal with getting rid of the shirts and medals.

SAFD: At the moment my half and full medals are split between shadowboxes and a shelf. I have been running too long now to put all my half and full medals in them so I'm going to get a second one of these. I already have one with my past few years of age group and short race medals so I want a second for my longer race medals. Once we re-do the office, and it is the only room we haven't redone in the past 5 years so it is due, I'll get the ones in the shadow boxes out and onto the new rack.

Disney shirts are part of regular running tech shirt rotation. I have a few hoodies from back when you could buy stuff at the expo and the I Did It shirts from the two fulls. Actually one is I Did It and the other is just "Finisher".
