Marathon Weekend 2023

Doing research on getting a Disney resort for 2023 MW...last year stayed at Grand Floridian. However, the monorail from GF was slow and the rooms are not worth $1000/day. Sad, because we have
great memories staying there years ago;but things have changed there. So, what resorts could you stay in that you could walk to the Epcot parking lot for the start of the races?? tia

SAFD: Another Brooks Ghost aficionado here. I use them for everything from roads to trails to everyday wear. I used to be a devotee of the Brooks Glycerin but they changed them up to the point where the added cushioning actually caused muscular issues in my lower leg. It all turned out for the best, though, as I could only get ~225 miles/pair out of the Glycerins while I now get ~300 miles/pair from the Ghosts.
Glad you brought this up bc my first marathon shoe was the Glycerin and I was really upset with the changes, it’s a much tighter fit (and I went up a size) AND they raised the heel so it kept cutting my ankle until I bought quarter length socks. Are the Ghosts basically serving as a replacement for the old Glycerins? Because I would consider getting those, although I still feel a bit betrayed due to what they did with Glycerin. Been thinking about switching to Asics as a result.

There are no resorts that would allow you to walk to the Epcot parking lot for the start of a race. IF Epcot is open and you have a park pass and reservation, you could walk back to the Boardwalk area resorts AFTER a race, but the buses are typically the best way to go. The only real walking option would be Poly, where you could walk to TTC but you'd still have to take the monorail from there to Epcot.

SAFD: As another big guy (215 pounds), I found Hokas work very well for me. When I'm on the trail (90% of my runs) I wear Hoka Challenger ATRs. When I'm pounding the pavement I wear Hoka Cliftons.

Fun (if sobering fact); Hokas cost about $150 after taxes (but not counting REI / MooseJaw discounts) and I get about 300 miles per pair. My running shoes thus cost about 50 cents per mile. And I thought gas was expensive.

SAFD: I use ASICS Nimbus and so does DH. DD use ASICS Kayano. Beware, the same model in different finish can be completely different, we got stuck with one such pair and they are unusable for running.

Thanks @Kerry1957 now I know that running shoes cost 0.35CDN per km. When the three of us run, that goes fast!

ETA: Thankfully we don’t do that type of calculation (volume of usage per $) for other items in our life.

I think the Ghosts have always been the "step-down" model from the flagship Glycerins, with a little less cushioning and a different drop being the main differences. My observation has been that they have both progressed in the cushioning arms race to the point that newer Ghost models have a similar amount of cushioning as the older Glycerin models. It's probably worth trying a pair out if you're not 100% sold on the newer Glycerins. The Brooks "Run Happy" guarantee reduces the risk of them not working out, as you have a pretty generous amount of time to test and return them.

I have worn New Balance 890 shoes since I started running ten years ago. There was a year when I went to ASICS because NB stopped making the 890, but I was more injury prone and thankfully found that the 890 came back! I like that they skew narrower for my feet, and besides some PF when I wear them after too many miles (400-ish), they have never steered me wrong.

I need new shoes right now but am again having trouble finding the 890 in my size. I might have to hit up my local running store to see I'd they have any in stock.

SAFD: I've been running in the Asics Gel Cumulus for years, currently have a pair of 22's and 23's in rotation, and I think I like the 23's better. I also have a new pair of the Asics Novablast 2 - really like the bounce on those, but the toe box might be too shallow for long runs (I haven't ran over 5 miles in them yet). For trail running I have the Altra Lone Peak 5.

SAFD: I've been trying to get less and less shoe over the past few years and currently run in Saucony Kinvara 12s for training and anything longer than a 10K race. I have some On Cloudflow shoes with a little more tread for the snow, my trail shoes are Saucony Peregrines, and I have the Mizuno Wave Ekiden for 10K and shorter races.

Where are your best spots to get pictures with all your medals in Epcot? Other than the Epcot ball of course!

Gardens in Canada and UK
Fence railings on the bridge between UK and France, or anywhere along the water around the WS
Fountains in France
Fountain in Morocco
Gardens in Japan
Fence rails near the train in Germany
Gardens in China
Orchid garden in Mexico
Fence railings near Odyssey House
Fence railings toward Imagination (especially if they have the colorful plantings out around the water there)
Fountains near the Imagination pavilion

Not in Epcot, but if you go out the WS entrance/exit and over to the Boardwalk area, there are lots of good shooting spots along the lake. The beach near Beach Club has a nice rope fence you can hang medals from, too.

SAFD: Nike Pegasus for short (5 to 10k max) runs, Nike Vomero for longer runs. The Vomeros are heavier but the cushioning is better and structure are better. I was having knee issues on longer runs and was fitted/ switched to the Vomero about 10 years ago and haven't had issues since then. For both shoes I can usually get them at a pretty deep discount at the Nike Outlet so long as I don't care which color I get - and there's been some interesting colours over the years!

In case you don't know the 890's were discontinued (again) and it's successor is the Rebel v2

SAFD: My trusty steeds are my Adrenaline 21's. I haven't had such a reliable pair of shoes since my Kayano 25's. I read the 22s are very different and I can't find any extra 21s in my size online.

Other good shoes in my rotation are my Tokyo Kayano 27's and my OG Endorphin Speeds. And my Gel Noosa Tri for speedwork.

I'm gonna start shopping for shoes for the 2023 season. I'm looking at the New Balance RC Elite v2 for my marathon, but dang are they expensive.

Ahhh running shoes :)

Noooo I thought that may have been the case but I didn't want to Google and worry myself.

Now to investigate the differences! Thanks for the info
