Marathon Weekend 2023

Reading all of this, I am less and less sure that I want to see Disney these years. I miss it but do not want to tint my memories. I haven’t been since running Dopey 2020. Is it just pandemic blues speaking? Or too much online reading?
My trips over the last year and a half (I've done several) have been some of my best trips in my nearly 30 years of going.

I never really thought MW had a theme like other weekends. The half, full, and both challenges are pretty much never going to change, especially the two named after the character, so that just leaves the 5K and half. I get why Oswald is included even though he isn't one of the Fab 5 since he is an original but I can't say he really does much for me. Maybe because he never really evolved. Current Mickey doesn't resemble the original Mickey much at all, in either look or how he is portrayed in films, while Oswald is kind of stuck in the 1920s.

I don't know if I'm in the minority here, but can we please ditch Oswald? I did the first year when they introduced Oswald for the 5K and I felt soooooo bad for my friend who was only doing the 5K and got a medal and shirt with such an obscure character. Next year if she moves up to the 10K (which she would like to do), she's stuck with Oswald again.

Here's a suggestion for a SAFD - if you could retheme the Marathon Weekend races (all of them including Goofy and Dopey), what themes/characters would you like to see?

Thanks for the SAFD suggestion. You will see that one popping up in the next few weeks. That will be a fun one!

Has anyone stayed at gran destino tower? Do they have separate buses from Coronado? Ive seen mixed answers when I’ve searched online. Thanks

I recently stayed at Coronado. The same buses were used for the rest of the resort and the tower at that point. Including the runDisney buses for marathon weekend.

I don't have anything against Oswald, but I wish they would go back to the old theming of Pluto 5K, Minnie 10K, Donald half, Mickey full. (sorry Daisy!) I love the tradition of the marathon being just Mickey's race, and likewise I think it's great for Minnie to get her own race (polka dot medal ribbon and all!).

Maybe they could have a 10k/half challenge like other weekends and Daisy could be the mascot.

Good morning (er, afternoon) runDisney Allstars! Sorry, daylight savings got me.

Today’s question: What is your go to running shoe(s)?

My answer: I run in three shoes: Brooks Ghost, Hoka Clifton and Speedgoat. I have run in the Ghosts for years and use them for training and races at about 10 miles and down. I use Clifton’s for longer distances. I am a big guy and like the extra cushion the Clifton provides when I am out longer. That is all on pavement though. When the snow is finally gone from this tundra and I start hitting the trails again I run in my Speedgoats. They provide fantastic traction, good cushioning and a little more stability than my other neutral shoes. I appreciate all this out on the trails. The only down fall to these shoes is that none are cheap! I look for sales and buy in bulk. Have a good week all.

SAFD: my favorite shoes (so far) are my ASICS Gel Venture 7s. I’m conflicted on the Venture 8s, they changed the shape of the toe, and I’m having trouble getting the sizing right. A lot of running shoes I’ve tried don’t come up as high on the heel as I’d like.

So far for shoes I’m a New Balance 1080 lover. So many colors to choose from! I started with 880s and developed some ankle/Achilles issues that the the top of the heel cup was making worse. I did try on some hoka rincons that had me very curious, but since I was only a month and a half out from goofy, I decided to not throw a new shoe into the mix.

SAFD: Currently my shoes are Asics gel cumulus. I was running in Mizuno wave riders and loved them but 2 models back they changed it and I can’t even walk in them anymore and I’m scared to try the new models. I’m on my last pair of cumulus 22s. Just pulled them out so they’ll be good for awhile but I need to try the 23s sooner than later as I’ll be training for marathon weekend with them at some point.

SAFD: I run with 3 pairs right now. Brooks Adrenaline GTS 22 for stability. Under Armour Flow Velociti Wind. Saucony Endorphin Speed 2. I really like the UA shoes. Comfortable around the heel and lightweight. The Bluetooth connectivity was more helpful than I anticipated during training.

SAFD: Another Brooks Ghost aficionado here. I use them for everything from roads to trails to everyday wear. I used to be a devotee of the Brooks Glycerin but they changed them up to the point where the added cushioning actually caused muscular issues in my lower leg. It all turned out for the best, though, as I could only get ~225 miles/pair out of the Glycerins while I now get ~300 miles/pair from the Ghosts.

SAFD: I don't run, much, but I've been wearing New Balance shoes for as long as I can remember. I'm currently wearing a pair of 840v4 shoes.

My DW, on the other hand, will wear Hokas, NBs, Reeboks, it doesn't really matter. This past MW trip, she packed 10 pairs of shoes (for a 9 day trip), and then realized she forgot to pack running shoes... while we were in Epcot... before the expo... and she's a Dopey runner... 🤷‍♂️... She got a new pair of Hokas at the Expo, we really didn't have much of a choice.

SAFD: After starting in Asics, then moving to Brooks, I've landed on New Balance. The 1080s were a bit too cushy for me, so I ran in the FuelCell Rebel v1 through my first full in 2020 and was still having issues with my neuroma acting up. I switched to the FuelCell RC Elite v2 for my Dopey training cycle and races this past year and have had ZERO foot issues at all. They do have the carbon plate and aren't cheap or easy to find in non-crazy colors, but I absolutely love them. I have two pair I am rotating now. NB is introducing v3 of these later this year, along with a companion trainer, so hoping they are as good.
