Marathon Weekend 2016

**training freak out**

I was scheduled for 20 miles today (my longest full training session to date). I tweaked my knee coming off a curb and only made it 9 miles. I figured it was better to stop than aggravate whatever I did to myself. Now I'm kind of freaking out about my training.

My longest run to date has been 17 miles. (Side note, I also managed to get in a full 26 miles on the Sunday of Avengers Half between the race and all the walking around the parks. I know this isn't the same, but I actually felt great the next day with very little soreness so I take a small amount of comfort in that.)

I did 12 miles on Thanksgiving, and I did another 12 miler the weekend before. I workout about twice a day, 5-6 days a week right now (mix of yoga, barre, and running). I had been feeling pretty good until today.

Should I just rest from short runs this week, stick with yoga & barre, and try for 20 again next weekend? My last long run is schedule to be 22 miles on Christmas Eve. I'm feeling nervous I won't have enough long runs in before the marathon.

Looking for some advice and perspective.

I think it was wise to stop. Definitely try not to freak out, it'll be fine. I'd see how the knee feels during this week and if it's good go for the 20 next weekend but if it bothers you during that run stop again. If the 20 goes well that'll leave a little less than two weeks until your final long run which is perfect.

It's best to make sure you are healthy and not sweat the training so much. I strained my knee last Saturday so I've missed an entire week. And that was just after recovering from a calf injury that cost some more time. It looks like you are doing some cross-training, which is good. I'm spending a lot of time on a recumbent bike - an hour and a half today - that doesn't bother my knee. Also doing weight workouts and core exercises. The key is to stay calm and not do anything that will worsen the injury. After some anguish last weekend, I'm at peace now with as long as it takes to fully recover. And with the cross-training, you can get in a lot of what you need in any case.

I bought the goofys last year and that's what I have been running with as of late and they have worked out great. I would like another show similar to that.

The NB Goofy shoes have been my favorite running shoe! I bought a pair in 2014 and used them for much of 2014 training for my full at this years marathon weekend. I recently bought another pair (non-disney) version and will probably use them at the 2016 half.

Wow took me a long time to catch up. The ultra discussions were interesting.

2016 option is now available, but no names yet.
Thanks for the link

A co-worker (I have mentioned this person before) approached me about running a 100 mile ultra marathon next summer. They wanted to know my opinion. This person hasn't completed a 1/2 marathon yet. They were signed up for Wine and Dine but obviously it got cut short.

I think you're rational and this person is drastically understimating the impact of running 100 miles. Voluteering at our local 100 miler gave me a lot of perspective on what running that far will do to your body. I'd suggest anyone considering an ultra volunteer close to the finish of one first. I saw one lady just stop 2 feet in front of the finish line. The race crew came out and basically pushed her over the finish line.

This is probably going to sound really harsh, but ...
I blame charities for that.
I was torn by your post. I don't necessarily think that charities are driving this mindset, but earlier in this chat someone mentioned that there were charities suggesting there runners find faster runners with the same name to use their proof of times. That type of stuff really bothers me.

I did check the boards yesterday afternoon, and then this morning another 2-3 pages. Things are picking up steam now. This weekend I am running the Baton Rouge Beach half marathon. My schedule calls for 18 miles with 14 at marathon race pace. So what I am going to do is run 5 miles before the race at a easy pace, and then run the half marathon at marathon pace. Weather is going to be ideal! a low of 41 race morning, sunny, wind ENE @ 7mph, and RH% ~ 64%. Packet pickup is today, and a easy 5 miler is on the schedule for this afternoon.
.

Good luck this weekend

Don't freak out. Undertrained > injured . At this point I don't think you'll be undertrained. I you feel good this weekend you could try another long run, if not the christmas eve 20 will be enough.

We are at Disney for a last minute trip before our kids AP's expire. I took some time to run on Boardwalk this morning and shot this timelapse video of the run from Studios to Epcot. This was around mile 24 of the old marathon course.

I hit another milestone today...20.5 miles! That's definitely one of those things I never thought I'd be saying. I feel pretty good considering, and I also had a better pace than I would have expected. I'm convinced something is off on the pedometer, LOL, and I don't really remember miles 14-18 (did I black out and just keep running???), but I guess I did it and survived! Only 6 more miles to go...I'm not sure if I feel like :cool1: or :scared1: about that.

Great job. Zoning out on this middle miles is not uncommon on training runs. Sometimes it makes the passing of the time more tolerable.

New half PR today! 2:06:07.

Was on track to get under 2:05 which was my goal but the last 2 miles were nothing but hills.

Awesome job!!!

I wouldn't stress too much about the long runs at this point. If you have hit 17 miles then you will be fine for the marathon. It is more important to be as injury free as possible at this point. If you feel like doing more next weekend go for it but if the knee isn't feeling right just try to keep the total weekly mileage up above 30 and you will be good, IMO.

You did the right thing. Take it easy and pay attention to the knee. Ease back into your runs and stop if the pain is returning. Bet you bounce right back, but always better to be safe than sorry.

Hey guys.
So ... I realize that I was a little hard on charities. I definitely think its awesome that people get the opportunity to raise money for a great cause while running, and I think it's nice that charities can get people who otherwise may not run to enjoy running. That said, I do have two problems with "unqualified" runners (and by that I mean people who sign up for a longer-distance race having never run before and are not necessarily aware of the training necessary):
1) It "cheapens" running in the eyes of others (which was my original point) - by making it seem like running a marathon (or half marathon) is something anyone can do as long as they're willing to raise money for charity X, it belittles the training necessary to get to that point, because most people will only see the fundraising, not the training.
2) You're asking people to get injured. Because not everyone will put in the proper training, and people are going to get injured if they don't know what they're getting themselves into. And while someone else's injury may not affect me, I still don't like seeing people get hurt. It's not a fun thing for me to see or hear about.

So anyway ... I'm really sorry if I offended anyone who runs for charity - it's an amazing thing to do. But I'm sticking with my opinion that people who have never run before shouldn't sign up for a distance race just because a charity encourages them to do so. If you want to sign up for a race and you've never run before ... go for a 1-2 mile run before signing up just to see if you're willing to put some training time, and go from there. If you're just trying to raise money for charity, there are other ways to do it.

10k question
The 10k has historically been a smaller race. It shouldn't be that hard to find each other after the race. Will you have a phone so you can text each other? If he knows about what time your finishing it should be pretty easy for him to wait for you on the other side of the bag check area. You could pick a spot to meet up. If you are checking a bag have him meet you at your bag check area.

Half Question.
Making it from Epcot - MK is easy. Making it from Main Street to Epcot will be tight and you could potentially miss him at the finish. If you saw him at the TTC it would be much easier to make it back in time to see him at the finish. I think you need to decide what's more important. (Seeing him twice or seeing him on mainstreet) If you are going to see him on mainstreet go to the end on the tomorrowland side. You can take pics of him running down mainstreet and once he gets ready to turn into tomorrowland pics of him in front of the castle.

don't worry you'll be fine.
Thank you! Do you know at about what mile the ½ hits main st?

Somewhere around mile 6. I'm sure someone will have a more specific answer, but that is what I can remember :)

Does anyone know of any discounted park tickets other than GET travel or undercover tourist? I thought I had seen them somewhere else, but can't find it now. We just ended up adding a couple of people to our trip.

I totally get where you are coming from on this issue

as for me I had my longest run to date today, 18 miles and it went OK, I was feeling really really great through the first half and actually all the way up to mile 14 but then my back started to really bother me and it killed my mental game and I had to kindof power walk and jog alternately for a couple miles before kind of getting my mojo back and finishing ok, I have struggled with back pain off and on since I started running (I have mild scoliosis) and I have gotten to the point where anything up to 13 miles doesn't really bother me anymore but clearly these longer runs are more taxing, I thought about taking advil ahead of running but then saw some things that say this is a bad idea, anyone else have any other ideas?

Just past the Contemporary on the left is the backstage service entrance to the MK. The turn into there is the 5 mile mark. The turn onto MainStreet would be about 5.2 miles. The 6 mile mark is near the Country Bears.
