Marathon training Thread for the week of 7/19-7/25

Thanks for all the B-Day wishes everyone. I had a really nice day. My DS flew my DD home for the weekend for my B-day. I haven't seen her since Christmas- it was a great weekend!

Well- I did my measley mile this morning..... Only it wasn't so measley! I decided that this week my challenge to myself would be to jog 20 seconds out of every minute I walk. So, this morning I did that.... almost! There were a few times when I only jogged 10 seconds out of the minute instead of 20. BUT ....... even this is a HUGE accomplishment for me! As a result, I cut 2 minutes off my normal time! I did the 1 mile in 18 minutes 15 seconds! Now- I know this is still too slow, but when I think about where I started I am simply amazed! I was really worried that I would have a hard time getting back into the groove of training, but setting this goal and accomplishing it for the most part is helping me alot! I also got online first thing this morning and read all your posts- and that helped me too. I just couldn't imagine me not posting something! THANK YOU ALL SO MUCH for beiung here everyday to nudge each other on!

Did I tell you guys that I actually LOST weight while I was on vacation?!?!? What kind of vacation is that!!! I'm down another 5 lbs. YEAH!!

ibounce- I've been thinking about going down to WDW for that 10k myself- but I'm just not sure I want to do that before I do the half. I'm still thinking!

Colleen- You are WAY to hard on yourself! Even though you weren't feeling all that well, you still did 5 miles at an 11 minute pace!! ONLY IN MY DREAMS will I EVER get there! You are wonderful!!! Keep up the good work girlie!

tw1nsmom- you have plenty of time to pick up your speed! i do understand your anxiousness about time though. My trainer is always telling me not to worry about it- I still have 6 months unitl the marathon! And get this.... she evn thinks I could do the full marathon if I wanted to! That is just so funny to me- because I am still 90 lbs. over weight! So- if my trainer says I'll be ok- then you will too!!! Keep your chin up- you'll be good to go when it's time.

Monica- I'm not sure exactly where the Contemporary hill is, but I know it's just before and through an underpass by the Contmeporary. I would LOVE it if you would check it out! I am a tad bit worried about hilss- and wonder how far into the racew this is for us. I would imagine towards the end of it. I wish I was going with you!

Beth- I'm glad to hear you are out walking even though it isn't for the amount of time you wanted to. Excercise can be a great stress relief- and I don't know anyone under more stress tyhen you right now. It will be a little easier now that you mom has made a few decisions. My prayers are still with you.

Cheryl- I'm so impressed with your 5 mile walk time! You keep that up and you'll be able to walk the half marathon twice to catch up to me at the end!

Grammy- will you be my mom?!?!?!? Mowing your DD's lawn! What a sweetheart you are! I did get my surprise in the mail before I lefdt, but haven't had a chance to thank you for it- so thanks! I LOVE IT! And I get compliments on it all the time. I will most definetly be wearing this everyday (it helps with the food that goes into my mouth!) and on the day of the marathon!

JODY- where are you my friend??? Have you started with the walking yet?? Come on now! YOU CAN DO IT!!!!

LAWalz- it sounds like you're doing a lot better! You'll get back into the swing in no time- just set a small little goal you can do to brag about on the thread- it worked for me! ;)

Meme- good for you for walking to a hard place. I love it when I do something because my friends have motivated me to do something GOOD! I'm really proud of you!

Good luck to everyone with their workouts today!!!

First: CONGRATULATIONS on 5 lbs gone!

Second: PLEASE, PLEASE come play with me at the 10K! I'd love to meet you.....I'd love to have the company......I'd love to walk with someone who's in similar condition to myself ::yes:: My friend PixieMagic will be with me, but I hate the idea of holding her back (pace wise) and I think maybe she would 'go for it' if she didn't feel like she was desserting me. I've decided to do it for a couple of reasons. It's about 1/2 way between now and the 1/2 marathon, at half the distance, so a good indicator of how training is going. I also like the idea of not being a total race novice in January. Hopefully won't feel overwhelmed by the whole thing in Jan if I have an idea of how a race is done/crowds handled....all of that.

Third: I'm headed down to the gym now (it's lunchtime here) for a 30 min walk.

later kids.........

I've had a glitch thrown in my plans. I've been feeling ill since Sunday and the doctor today diagnosed me with vertigo. It feels like the room is spinning!

No walking for me for a few days - I get rechecked on Thursday afternoon. Until then, no driving, no work and my meds make me sleepy. The doc says I'm extra prone to falling so no more walking until I'm cleared.

Don't worry - just like Ah-nold said "I'll be back!". :sunny:

Hi Everyone! Thanks for listening to me yesterday and for all your good thoughts. Sorry for not saying a personal hello to all yesterday, my head was not there. My sister is only moving 1.5 miles away and I will probably walk there at least 1x per week. Today was a better day, I even was able to get in a 2 mile walk. I will try for 3 tomorrow. Now if I could only not be so tired but only 9 days left of antibiotics, so there is hope.

DoeWDW- Try to take it easy, I have had vertigo and it is not fun. Take care of yourself!

ibouncetoo- I am in the same boat pace wise. I am just hoping to get fast enough to stay in front of the bus on marathon day. I am doing the 3.5 mile Chase Corporate Challenge next week to try and guage myself and give me the experience of a race.

Karen- Congrats on losing 5 more lbs., on vacation yet! You go girl!

Collen- You are doing great! Take it easy on yourself and remember how much you have already accomplished. I don't think I will ever do an 11 minute mile, well maybe in my dreams.

Dawn- I am slow too, but we will make it, I know we will. My younger sister is your age and has a set of twins, also.

mishoe01- Great idea to check out that hill, I had heard that the course was flat. I am in the 20 minute mile club, too!

Beth- Glad you got a chance to walk. I will keep you and your mom in my thoughts and prayers. Actually there is only a little pain it just feels sore all the time so I know it is there.

Cheryl N. WI- 8 miles is great! And under 15 minute miles are even better. No wonder your legs were tired! Keep it up!

AlreadyexcitedGrammy- You are a great mom! Mowing the lawn is hard work. Hope your knee feels better!

Auntmeme- That stinks about the gravel and the bridge! Hope your son gets to see it another time.

Debbie- Europe must have been great! Congrats on your medals.

decaff38- I am no where near a twelve minute mile and will probably never get there. Keep on trucking.

Have a great Wednesday! We are all doing great!

Checking in for Tuesday. I did okay on the eating front-with just a quick Go Lean Crunch snack as we played Careers with the youngest two. I procrastinated until the last minute, but went to Curves and did 2+ rounds (we have 14 machines, but I can't do two of them right now). Finished up by walking. . .through the grocery store. Picked up a couple of gifts (kids clothes) and the now cats love me. ;) Oh, and I did my "Theraband" exercises for the knee, so all in all, it was a successful day. Happy dreams!

Hello all,

Just a veryshort walk for me this morning....20 minutes? So I transfer my goal of 50 minutes for today over to tomorrow...

Have a good day everyone!
~~Beth

Good morning everyone. Everyone is really doing great.

Doreen- Take care of yourself. I hear Verdigo is not fun at all.

Karebare- Great job on loosing while on vacation. Doesn't that feel great!! You go girl!

Great job everyone!

okay - half way through the week - and I really want to try to walk tomorrow - I am thinking that 3 days of "not doing" exercise may just get me into thinking I can be a "slacker" and I have to confess I am not doing that great this week food wise (UNTIL TODAY THAT IS ::yes:: ) Yep that was for me more than you guys, cause now that I have said it out loud - I am accountable to being GOOD!

Actually told my buddies this morning that I am going to journal (every morsel) until July 29th (when we are going for a mini-vacation for the weekend). It has just become to easy for me to be a "guesstimator" of points and with not exercising so far this week, I just need to get into the serious mode again!

WAIT - I will find a green bracelet to wear (oh duh!) Well, you see I don't have one my size at the moment (yeah - ohMom snagged it) and my friend the "suprise maker" has been really busy. Oh good, I now know, I can get through the next few days tho - when I look at it, I will remember what I said - "I am being GOOD"! Whew - glad that is all under control :teeth: (And - wah-lah - I have one on already - just happen to have a couple in my bag with me ;)

I am so glad that I have this thread to just know there are "fellow trainees" (better known as FRIENDS) out there and with reading about such a good job YOU are all doing - makes me want to do a good job too!

Okay - think I make through this day - a nice "chat" with you all puts things back into perspective - and keep up the good work everyone

Back to work I go!

Hi everyone

WOW we are really getting alot of walking in and alot of activity on this thread this week. That is so great!

I got in my 55 min. walk last night while DD was at dance again. It is very humid here and I was sweating like crazy when I had to go into the dance studio to get her. I found a new hill that was gradual but long and I really felt it. I'm going to try and keep getting in as many hills as I can so that I'll be ready for the Contemporary hill but from what I can picture in my mind from past trips that hill is a steep one, I hope I'm wrong though LOL. When we cruise the Magic in Nov. we are staying the night before the cruise at the Pop Century so we will be on Disney grounds so I told DH sometime that day we HAVE TO take a drive to the Contemporary so I can see that hill again before the marathon LOL.
I was hoping to get outside for a walk today again but it looks like the rain is coming and right now DD and I are stuck home waiting for someone to come and install the satelite dish for the TV. Hpefully the rain will pass and I'll get my walk in tonight.

Monica How exciting that you will be at WDW in 45 days. We will be anxiously awaiting your report on the Conntemporary hill ;) From your countdown it looks like you are going to Night of Joy! I wish I could go to that and am thinking maybe next year or the following year. Please let me know all about it when you get back!

Dawn You asked about my pace when I first started I think I was doing about a 20 min. mile and I was only doing a mile or two at a time. I have gradually been adding in more distance and quickening my pace. YOU CAN AND WILL DO THIS! Don't doubt yourself we still have alot of time for training, just be persistent about getting in your walks and the speed and increased distances will come. Oh and you asked about our ages I turned 40 in Jan. I just tell myself it's just a number and if we keep being active we will be healthy and stay "young" longer.

Colleen GREAT job getting out there even though you couldn't do your speed workout. But isn't 5 miles at a pace of 11:20 a speed workout??? It sure would be for me. ;) You go girl! TOM always slows me down too.

Jackie You go girl! You are doing the 10K in Oct.!!! I wish I could join you, and for a fleeting moment I thought about trying to get to WDW for it, but with our cruise in Nov. it just won't work for me :( You will have to let us know all about it when you get back! I am going to try and find some 5K or 10K races around here before the marathon so that I won't be a race novice.

Karen You lost weight on vacation, WOW that is GREAT!!!! Congratulations on another 5 poonds gone!!!! And great job with working in the jogging!!!!! You go girlfriend!

Doe Take care of yourself! This too will pass and you'll be out there walking again. I hope the room is stopping it's spinning quickly!

LAWalz I'm glad things are getting better!!! Definitely use your walks as an "excuse" to visit your sister when they move out, maybe it will help to make it not seem so much like they're not right there anymore. GREAT job getting in your walking!

Debbie Sounds like you had a busy day and accomplished alot of exercising! Keep up the GREAT work!

Beth Good job with getting in some shorter walks and transferring the missed minutes to the next day!!!! A short walk is better than no walk at all!! I hope all is going well with your mom and the rest of your family. You are in my prayers.

Melanie It's good to see you checking in!!! Are you getting back on track with your exercising? YOU CAN DO THIS!

Grammy You are NOT a slacker you are just taking care of your knee! Eating well certainly is a hard thing to stick to! Hopefully journaling will help. I have been trying really hard to journal too because when I don't or if I wait untill the end if the day to write down what I have been eating all day I am often going YIKES :guilty: did I really eat all that. Glad you found a bracelet for yourself, here you are sending them out to everyone else and you didn't even have one. That is so kind of you!!! Now keep that bracelet on! Mine really helps me because it makes me think of this wonderful group of friends we are here and what we are accomplishing together and it helps to keep me motivated!

Have a good day everyone :sunny:

Cheryl :grouphug:

Well, today, after I read Grammy's post, I decided that she should NEVER feel alone, so......... I ate like crazy to make her feel better! Did it help Grammy??? I had such a tremendous appetite today! I haven't stopped eating all day. I'm trying to ingest low carb foods, but it hasn't always been low carb.

I need to confess....
I ate 2 old Krispy Kreme donuts

I am ashamed! :sad2:

BUT.... I don't feel too bad.... because I hardly ever do that- and everyone is intitled to a little insanity now and again. Right!?!?!!?

Anyway- I walked 1 mile this morning alternating jogging in 10-20 second intervals. Finished my mile in 18 mins. 2 seconds! Faster then yesterday! I'll do my other mile later tonight. Jogging for those few seconds really does me in! I really didn't think I could do 2 miles all at once, so I'm splitting them.

I'm gonna try to set a mini goal in losing more weight between now and the 2nd Friday in August. I really don't like setting weight loss goals because I inevitably don't meet the goal and then I get all depressed etc. BUT I'm gonna be seeing some friends from Michigan in August and last year when I saw them I weighed 20 lbs more then I do now. I want to lose at least 5 more lbs between now and then so I can be down 25 lbs. Maybe they'll notice the weight loss if I get those 5 lbs. off. They will, at the VERY least, notice the ease with which I walk around campus!

Well- I'm off to figure out what to eat for dinner tonite......

Have a good night everyone!!

Oh, Karen, of course everyone is entitled to insanity in their lives. BUT, I hope that you nuked those suckers so they tasted like they were fresh! Were they plain? Or my favourite-chocolate dipped?

I was at physio this afternoon, and I did 25 minutes on the treadmill at 3.5 mph for a lot of the time, the ab/adductor machines and leg presses (I hate that machine!) THEN, we did some work on balance and knee work with the 10 pound weights on the ankles. UGH! I worked hard, did some more walking through the stores, and am tired enough to head to bed.

My orthotics tech gave me some pointers on training, and Grammy, she was quite insistent about the rest days. You've just got yours all in one string. ::yes::

Sending good vibes :hyper: and support :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2: to all!

Hello wish walkers!

I finally got in a good walk today!! 56 minutes. I had hoped for 50+ yesterday, but transferred my goal to today and I made it!! I'm heading to town today and one stop will be for new shoes...I really need to replace the pair that I bought last and didn't like.

Debbie, my fave krispy kremes are just the plain glazed and they must be hot. ::yes:: Sounds like a good workout for you yesterday!

Karen, I'll follow your lead and really watch my food until Aug 13...uh oh...Friday the 13th. Anyway, I also need a little boost, so let's do this together. BTW, my evil snack this week that I have no will power---M&M's. GOOD for you on the jogging!

Cheryl, I really want to see the Contemporary hill, too!! Where I live is totally flat, so any hill is going to be a challenge.

Grammy, with us being away from home so much lately, We've been eating out a lot and I haven't always made the best food choices. I'm looking forward to having a more normal week next week and getting back into our food routine! You probably needed those 3 days of rest!

Doe, how are you feeling today? I hope you are doing better!!

Sorry to those I have missed...I have to dash....

Have a great day eveyrone!
~~Beth

HI all:wave:

I walked a little over 2 miles yesterday, forgot ped so just estimating. Did not realize it was so hot out so we went swimming afterwards, ahhh.

Thanks grammy for the bracelet:hug: I love it! it really did help withe the extra walking I did yesterday:)

Oh Karen - 2 donuts, yummy;) A krispy kreme opened a fewmonths ago not too far from our house and I have yet to go - though I have been tempted many times- I love the jelly :teeth: Well back to plan today right?

Sounds like you had a great workout Debbie, are you resting today? What did they say about rest days? every other?

Cheryl aren't hills great:p I really feel it in my thighs, how many x-tra calories do we burn? and what is this about a hill on the course:scared1: I thought it was flat. Have you been on the magic before? We're going on the 10/2 cruise & I'm looking at excursions now and would love recommendations:D

pirate: Arrrr get out and walk!

I did my two miles today and I tried not to time myself and just focus on walking as fast as I could.

I stayed OP yesterday and today, but have been eating way too much. Lots of emotional eating...I'm having issued with DS's and DD's school. It's way too lengthy to go into completely here, but since both children receive therapy/services, I have to go through several people to register complaints/impliment change. There are times I want to either slap someone or eat a large piece of chocolate cake. As I don't want to see the inside of a jail cell in my lifetime, I may have to resort to the cake (Or warm Krispy Kremes, yummmm...Karen, there is no way I could stop at two:tongue: ).

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhh. you all make me feel so much better today! Thanks. And NO.... I didn't even think about heating them in the microwave! But..... there is one more left.........:bitelip:

nah......... I couldn't do it..... could I?!?!??!

Well, I did a mile and a half last night around the neighborhood with my DH. It was a beautiful windy night, the moon was out and the stars were shining. and the horizon was varying shades of blue. I might go out again tonight just for the view- but this time I'll take my camera and get some pics! then you all can see what it looks like!

I also got the bloodwork results from the Dr.s office yesterday. It's all good! My potassium was back in the normal range- but still low normal so I have to keep taking the potassium for about 6 months. The BEST news was my cholesterol. Last time I had it taken (last year) it was like 181, which isn't bad actually, but this time it was 161! The good cholestorol was at 49 and the bad a 96! I guess going to the nutritionist was a good thing! All other numbers of concern were good. So.... I feel good! I guess maybe that news will keep me away from the Krispy Kremes!

Well- I'm off to clean the house! My mom is coming here this weekend and it must be clean so she can know she taught me well!! I'll post again later after I've done my mile today.

What did they say about rest days? every other?

Well, I was told to have at least 2 rest days a week. So, this may be one (it should be, but maybe Curves? I really do need to make sure that I am getting that habit back under control.)

And I was just on Hal Higdon's site and caught this quote: If you become fixated on how fast you walk, you can push yourself too hard and increase your risk of injury. So, I read that to mean the old adage: Slow and steady wins the race, and I am rewriting: Slow and steady finishes the race (and wins a Donald medal.) :teeth:

Congrats on those numbers, Karen....and eat that banana!

Tw1nsmom, I'm sorry that you are going through stress because of the school. As a teacher, that really IS the last thing that I want to give my parents (but I know that it happens-at school I am 'parent' to 25, not just 1, 2 or the 5 of my own.)

Good walking, Beth and Michelle!

Remember: Just put one foot in front of the other!

It all started with a stupid mistake I made at work last night and then obseesed about it. I went out for my regular(ha-ha) run/walk this morning still thinking about it. I put on my head phone and pedo. and was gone. Not thinking how far or fast. I started walking and then ran to the stop sign, then walked to the mailbox and ran to the driveway and so on and so on. Each hill I ran up the first part and then walked to the top. When I got home I almost fell on the ground in shock. I had run/walked 3.0 miles in 50 minutes ( 16.6 minute miles)!!! I had been proud that I had walk/ran a 19.65 min. mile last week. Strange new strategy - Find something that you can obsess about and run!! The strangest thing is that I rarely obsess about anything. I always try to logically solve the problem. Here's another goofy thing - its that TOM!! I'm usually quite a bit more draggy and unmotivated then. Go figure!!

Debbie &Auntmeme - I could shoot the person who introduced me to Krispy Kremes. My only saving grace is the closest store is 170miles away!! Auntmeme - Don't go!!!!
Karebear1- Try the landmark thing." I'll run to the mailbox, walk to the stopsign, run to the next telephone pole(they are about 1 min. apart.) It is so much easier than checking time and you don't take you eyes off your route(less chance of a fall or stumble)
twInsmom- get a pedometer( $10.00 at Target, kMart, etc) It does everything you want. Time of run, # of steps, mileage, cal. burned. You don't even have to think about it.
trola40- Wow! 56 minutes. That's what happens when you quite thinking about it. I love it too!!
Cheryl- We had your humidity on Mon. and TUes. Yuck!! Today it started out at 62. I had a great run in that temp. Hope the Marathon is about that in Jan.
mishoe01- Let me know how the Marriot Grand Vista is for you. I haven't decided where to stay yet , but we have 5 and I'm thinking a suite would be best.
DoeWDW- Great time to catch up on your reading ,since you need to stay down. Find a good book and the time will fly by. Maybe even a training book. Nah! A great romance will really occupy your mind. Hope you feel better soon!

Beth-You are incrediblly brave!! My father has had a quintuple by-pass, colon cancer twice and liver cancer. I am blessed to still have him but only through the grace of god. You will find your strength in your weakest moments and will look back and be impressed with yourself. Your mother is a woman to look up to for that strenghth. It a gift she is giving to you forever!! God bless!!

Thursday is truly a good day!!

LAWalz HAPPY BIRTHDAY :bday: You did say earlier in the week that today is your birthday right? (Well hopefully I didn't read that wrong ;)) Have a wonderful day!

I just have time for a quick good morning  to everyone. I need to get lots done today and I am hoping to get my long in today seeing how I haven't walked in the last 2 days so my legs should be good and fresh, hopefully time will permit. I'll try and get back here tonight to check in on everyone.

Have a GREAT Friday everyone! Get out there and walk! :sunny:

Cheryl

It's official......I'm in the WDW 10K in October.....

Hit the treadmill at work twice this week and should again today on my lunch hour. Have to figure out where to do my long walk on Saturday (as it's 100+ degrees here!). Just have to get to whatever mall I choose EARLY so I'm not ramming in to people ;)
Swam one other night and will again on Sunday (well, maybe Saturday too....but just for fun!)

HAPPY FRIDAY EVERYONE!

Thanks for the birthday wishes, Cheryl. Today is my birthday. A cloudy, humid and showery day on Long Island. I am going to try and get a walk in this afternnon before having 30 family and close friends for my birthday tonight. We were supposed to have a healthy BBQ but the weather has forced plan B, pizza and salad. I am still hoping to have it outdoors because it will be a tight squeeze indoors. Have a great day everybody!
