Can you believe we are al;ready into Septmeber everyone? Man ! When I typed that out I almost couldn't believe it. It's almost 120 days until we walk- that's only 4 short months!I was thinking this m,orning about how uninspired I am to walk right now. Taking those 2 vacatiuons did me in. But then, I went and read the remaining threads that were posted for last week and I am feeling so much better. Thnak you all for your inspiring words and POSITIVE outlooks on training. I think it is time to be eating, sleeping and thinking TRAINING for me! So.. today I restart with a new emthusiasm and spirit!

My visit with the dietician went well last week- as evidenced by the fact that I have lost 2 lbs. this week! Today I will walk 4 miles. Then on Thursday evening, I will meet with my trainer so she can see what's happening with the foot. Until we figure that out, I'll be doing shorter distances. But- taht doesn't mean I can't think, eat and dream Training..... right??? I'm gonna get my self some readng material and get psychologically prepared as well. Anyone know of anything good and inspiring to read??

A couple of weeks ago someone posted a great quote from a book they were reading.... something about you can go as far as your imagination allows you to..... who was that??

I'll report back tonite after I have walked to let you know how I did!

Still getting back into the groove after my at home vacation with my bud. Powerwalked 3 miles in 55 min. (17.9 min. miles) Better that the 21 minute mile the first day back.
Need some inspiration turn on the Olympics . They are running the Men's Marathon on the original route from hundreds of years ago. They just pasted the 13. mile mark. WOW!!!

I am going to give the South Beach a try(again) . If I can take a bit of weight off, I will likely improve my speed. I am joining a club that is fasioned after Curves but is for both sexes. They have the oliptical bikes. I think they will be a great workout. I am also looking for a good slightly used treadmill. In this country it is hard to run in 3 feet of snow.

Karebear: I quoted a great book called " No Need For Speed- A beginner's guide to the joy of running " By John Bingham. It has a lot of testimonials (short) that are great to read. He also writes for Runner's world magazine and Authored "The courage to Start" I will watch for other good books. We will get there- Slow and steady!!

Happy Sunday! I did my 4 mile "brisk" today. Brisk is not yet "brisk" enough (16-17 min/mi), but it is coming. I added up my exercise minutes, and they were okay for the week. I'm pleased.

Does anyone know how to do the "race walk" walk? Like on the olympics? Maybe that would help with speed. Watched the men's marathon go today. What a shame for the Brazilian! But his excitement and pride was fun to watch at the end of the race. (missed the medal ceremony) Just think....before you know it, that will be US! -well in a limited degree. ;)

Have a great week, everyone. I need to get myself organized for back to school. We've almost moved one teen, and the second will be done by next Sunday. Wow!

Remember: Slow and steady wins the race. . . and the Donald medal!

Debbie,

I don't know how to race walk, but I've read that it is really difficult to do correctly. I know that they "duck walk" and use a rolling motion involving lots of hip action. Also, one foot must always be on the ground, otherwise they are considered running and then disqualified. Experienced race walkers "walk" far under 10 minute miles! I'm thrilled to run that pace!

Did my long, mall walk today. Five miles in 80 minutes, including warm up and cool down pace and one potty break! Will have a rest day tomorrow then plan on at least 30 mins minumum on the treadmill for the rest of the week, with a little relaxing swimming thrown in. Next Sat I head out for WDW and just found out that the gym at AKL is now FREE to registered guests. (There used to be a fee.) So now I can't use the heat and humidity excuse to keep me from putting in some good mileage! I think with that 11,000 sq ft pool, I should get some exercise there too! We still plan on doing an Epcot/Boardwalk/MGM route too.

Karen, I posted the 'imagination' quote from John Binghams book, "Marathoning for Mortals" . I'll find it and come back to this post with a link. Beckie don't you just love him! I'm also going with South Beach starting this week....I was finding straight Atkins too restrictive and I want to bring in more of the good carbs for training.

edited; here's the link to the quote:
http://disboards.com/showthread.php?s=&postid=6221165#post6221165

Which leads me to a question.......the pasta dinner that they have for runners the night before the race....there is no way I could eat a dinner size portion of pasta without, shall we say, repercussions.....do you think they'd let me have a mostly meatball dinner???? Suppose I could just have the salad and whatever amount of protein they serve and take care of getting other types of carbs myself. I need to do some more reading on carbs consumption and fitness training, so I guess it's really too soon to worry about that.

Keep up the good work everyone!

::yes::

Hi fellow marathoners

It sure is hard to believe we are heading into Sept. already! YIKES where is the time going?

I did make my goal last week of 3 days of walking and 2 days of crosstraining and I am going to make tha my goal for this week again. It is also my goal for this week to definitely start eating better. I have a meeting after work on Tues. where the company we buy our ultrasound machines from is picking all of us techs up after work in a limo and driving us down to Chicago for a meeting and to wine and dine us. I will restart my diet after that! Sept. 1 is definitely the day for me!!! I am almost to my goal of 1000 minutes of exercise for Aug., I only have 50 more min. to go and I should get that done tomorrow. I am finally going to make a goal on one of these challenges! I just signed up for the 1000 min. challenge for Sept. Is anyone else joining that one?

Karen if you are looking for a good book to read for preparing and motivating for the marathon I am almost done reading "Marathoning for Mortals" by John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield and I highly recommend it. On the cover of the book it says it is "A Regular Person's Guide to the Joy of Running or Walking a Half-Marathon or Marathon" I am definitely a regular person whenvit comes to this lol. As Jackie and Becky have said Bingham is great and he is very motivating. Ashley had also mentioned this book in a number of her posts in the past. I have many pages marked to keep referring back to as I continue with this endeavor.

Jackie how exciting that you leave for WDW next week! It sounds like you have good plans for keeping up with your training. I have already started thinking about how I am going to have to make sure that I keep up with my training when we cruise in Nov. and what days to fit it in. Do you think people would think I'm crazy if I keep walking back and forth in the section of the airport where our gates is while we are waiting for our palne instead of sitting and reading like I usuallly do LOL?

Keep moving everyone and have a great week!

Cheryl :sunny:

Oh Cheryl! I don't know about that pacing idea..... somebody may get a tad bit suspicious of you nad wonder whta the heck is going on! you may end up in airport security! ;)

I've done 1 mile so far today- in 18:31. I've been sick for 3 weeks now- and I'm really feeling it today. But I want to complete my goal of walking, so I went upstairs and walked one mile, cam e down here to post and am going up to do another and will come down and post again... and ao on and so on.... until I reach that 4 mile mark and finish! I hope I can do it- I'll just keep posting- and if I don't post 4 times, then you'll all know what a big LOSER I am !!!

WISH ME LUCK PLEASE!

Karen I wondered about that a little myself. I guess I better just figure out another day to get in a day of training. We get 2 stops at CC on our cruise so I guess I could make sure and walk there both those days, what better palce to walk than paradise afterall, and walk the decks of the ship 1 day and do my crosstraining in the spa. Thanks for being worried about me getting picked up by security ;) I wouldn't want to miss my cruise!

Karen you are NOT a loser!!! You can make it !!! GOOD LUCK!!! Do you have your bracelet on to keep you motivated? I hope you get to feeling better quickly, 3 weeks of being sick is too long, have you seen your doctor?

Cheryl :sunny:

Mile 2- 18:45

I don't know if I'll be able to do anymore. I am sooooo sick- and I can't drink water (which I most definetly have to) because it makes me feel sicker.

I'll see how I feel in 30 mins. or so and try to walk again- but I just don't know if I'll be able to do it.

Karen, since you didn't post again, I'm guessing that the illness has beset (and bested) you. I'm so sorry. :worried: Take care of yourself. And don't be browbeating youself, either. These are the sorts of things that we can't control. Your body was saying, "Rest, rest, I need rest!" Hugs, hun. We'll see you as soon as you are feeling more chipper. :) And what am I doing up at 4:00 in the morning? I caved and ate corn chips and cheesies....and my tummy hurts-and now MY body is saying, 'Stupid, stupid, stupid!'

Oh Debbie - 4 am junk food-yikes:scared1: that's an extramile for you today!

Poor Karen - I hope you feel better today:wizard: good job trying!

Cheryl - I signed up for the challenge in Sept:Pinkbounc looking forward to it. You have 2 stops at CC, I envy you:) but our cruise is almost 30 days out so I'll stick withmine:) Your Chicago trip sounds great don't over do it or you may wind up like Debbie on the board at 4am;)

Walked 2.25 yesterday and hopefully will get in a longer one today, supposed to rain:( I wish all these storms would knock it off!

Have a great Monday everyone:wave2:

good morning my training friends!!

karen -- i agree with Cheryl --have you seen your doc? i'm a firm believer that you SHOULD NOT exercise when you are that sick you are doing more harm than it's worth. you will catch back up with your training, when you are healthy again. this is TOP priority young lady:hug:

cheryl -- actually i'm thinking if you have lots of time in the airport and find a place with a long stretch (not in security checks of course) and just put your shoes on and go ---- I know the Columbus airport has a large lobby area and walking it from one end to the other would probably take close to 10 mins. Tell some security guard that's what you're doing before you start. who cares if he thinks you are loopy?

well I drug my sleepy buns out of bed at 6:30 this morning and did approx. 4 miles in 55 mins. I was jogging 3 mins/walking 6 mins. i was pretty pleased with it. I'm still have aches in my shins, though it is lessening. actually i'll pop some advil today while i'm thinking of it............ok back

tomorrow will be water aerobics for me -- someone mentioned my crazy workout schedule (very flexible I just cross-train what sounds more fun that day) but i'm really trying to incorporate some strength training too. I read somewhere that strong arms are helpful for a runner -- and you know the more muscle mass you have the leaner you'll be as you burn more calories throughout the day, even in rest. so dust off your hand weights ladies...............(and gents!)

Morning-

somehow Monday just seems "like a nicer" word when I am home and not at work :teeth: Yep, started out with a 5 mile walk outside.

I still haven't signed that contract with myself BUT I am defiantely back to no eating after 7 beginning today. I have gotten back into just a handful of my DH's popcorn, a 1 pt tropicanna bar, etc. so not terrible things but I need the discipline again.

I am not sure what I will get done in the way of exercise the next couple of days - but I do think I will go sign up for the 1000 mi exercise in Sept., too.

Hope it is a good day for all of you - one day at a time and we will get there ::yes::

Good morning everyone!!

I hope you had a great weekend.

Karen - hope you're starting to feel better, and I will add my 2 cents and also tell you to take it easy!!

Meme and Cheryl - I think you guys will find ample opportunities to exercise on your cruises....whether on CC or on the ship.

I managed to do just under 4 1/2 miles on Sat - started out and it was hot....kept going then it got soo much hotter that I couldn't continue. Don't have a clue what the time was. Oh well. I watched my nephew all week last week (after I got back from the beach....Karen--legs got burned by the sun when I forgot to reapply sunscreen). Have been trying to get my place into some decent type of shape as the realtor is coming on Wed to talk about putting this up on the market.

4 days to go before I head down to Orlando....I can't wait! Have printed out some trails that I found for around the WDW resort area, and do plan to do walking while I'm there. There is also a lap pool at the Marriott Grande Vista which I hope to take advantage of.

OK--should get my butt in gear to do the errands I need to do soon while I'm thinking of them. Hope everyone has a great Monday!

Good Morning everyone!

Debbie- I had to laugh outloud when I read your comment about being up at 4am and eating "corn chips and cheesies" ! Ha!!! Made me feel so much better. (That, my friend, sounds exactly like something I would do!!)

As you can tell, I did not succeed in my venture last night. I was feeling pretty bad about that, but it's amazing what a good night's sleep will do for perspective. I believe that my sickness is coming from some new meds I've been taking- at least as it relates to the last week of feeling sick. I'm hoping that it will just take my body a few more days to assimulate to these new meds. If not.... I'll have to try something else. In any case- I think I've figured out a way to get my excercise in without the effects of the meds messing me up. I think if I do my walking first thing in the morning- before I take my meds for the day- that I will be able to get the walking done with no ill effects. So- even tough I am not supposed to walk today, I'm going to do the last 2 miles from yesterday and go on with my week as usual. Thanks for all your concern and support .

Monica!! I want sooooo badly to take a trip down to Orlando before we go down for the half! Have a great time!!!

Grammy- a nice 5 mile walk in the cool morning sounds so nice (I can't believe I just said that!!!) ANd it sounds like your well on your way to cahnging back to your good old eating habits again. That takes so much will power to go back to good eating and habits when you broke away from them for a while. You shouldm be very proud of yourself.

Mom- thanks for calling me a "young" lady. :teeth: That made me smile too! Your time for your 4 miles is great. I have thought about doing water aerobics. Actually - I went to the local indoor pool last week and picked up info on their water aerobic classes. How long have you been doing these kind of classes and do you think they really help? I'm really wanting to incorporate some kind of extra conditioning, and am trying to choose between Curve, water aerobicsa and a reg. gym.

Meme- You have a neat way of thinking. It's raining- a you want it to stop so you can get a longer walk in! I admire that!!

Jackie- thanks for that link- that's exactly what I was looking for. And thanks to everyone else for the reading ideas. I will use those books to inspire.

Did you guys see what happened to that poor marathon runner yesterday in the Olympics? I would've been SO MAD if that happened to me! I feel just awful for him! He lost the gold because of that guy!!!

I got in 50 min. on the exercise bike and 5 min. stretching so 1 day of crosstraining is done for the week. Tomorrow will be an off day for me as I better sleep to the last min before getting up for work because we will be getting home late from our meeting. I will try hard not to overdo it so I don't end up with a tummy ache like Debbie. Debbie I hope you are feeling better. I hate it when I cave like that and I eat so much that I feel like the old Alka Seltzer comercial "I can't believe I ate the whole thing" . I hope you are feeling better!

Meme Did the rain stay away today so you could get in your walk? I hope so! Wow only 30 days until you cruise! You must be getting so excited. Which cruise are you doing, the Western or the Eastern?

Molli Great time on your 4 miles especially with your shins still hurting! I remembr reading somewhere that strengthening the upper body improves running/walking too. I just wish there were more hours in the day to fit all these different exercises in. I'll have to dust off my hand weights and my upper body and ab tapes too and maybe split my crosstraining between the bike and some weight training. Have fun at your water aerobics class! I think I'll maybe do as you suggested about walking at the airport and talk to the security screeners when we go through security and see what they say and take it from there. We do usually have a fairly long walk from security to our gate at the Milwaukee airport and if they say I won't be looking too suspicious a few times back and forth would get some walking in.

Grammy That's very impressive starting your day and Monday at that with a 5 mile walk!!! Having the discipline with the eating sure is hard isn't it! I am pledging to start full force with that on Sept. 1! Want to join me?

Monica Great job walking even though it was so hot. That hot weather your having is preparing you for your trip to Orlando. It sounds like you have some busy days before you leave. Good luck getting everything done and good luck with your meeting with the realator! Have fun in Orlando!

Karen Sending some  your way and hoping you continue to feel better and get your meds figured out :wizard: It sounds like you have a good idea about getting in your walks before taking your meds. Did you check with your doctor or pharmacist to see if it is "normal" for those meds to make you feel so yucky? It is so frustrating when you want to do something but your body doesn't cooperate because you don't feel well!
If you are still looking for inspiring reading did you by any chance print off any of the reports from the last marathon? I did and if you would like I could make copies of them and send them to you. I came across them last night again and reread some of them and they got me more excited about this again.

Keep moving everyone!

Cheryl :sunny:

Good Tuesday Morning Everyone,

Well, I took my DD for her stroller walk again last night. We were out for an hour and I put in 2.1 miles. That's okay since we had to stop at the MiniMart to check our lottery tickets (I won $10.00 and 4 free tickets, not the 26 million but I'm very happy with the ten bucks), stopped to pick up the mail. It's great though because now when I tell her were going for our walk she goes and gets two apples from the fridge and two bottles of water.

Now, if I could just get her to potty train.

I'm glad the weather is cooler because that sure helps the mood. That said though it supposed to get up in the eighties everyday this week and sunny. I think we're finally getting our summer here in Ontario.

Have a great day everyone and keep on trekking. Only 130 days til it's all over.:earseek:

Good morning everyone:)

Karen, I am so sorry to hear you are sick. I hope you recover ASAP. You have had more than your share of set backs, but I know you will bounce back and be SPECTACULAR on race day::yes::

I did 3.5 miles on the treadmill yesterday. The best part is I ran 5.2 mph for 25 minutes. That's up from 5.0 mph last week. I'm hoping to get an endurance run/walk in this weekend.

My food has been TERRIBLE. I hosted a cookout over the weekend and ate like a pig.

Yesterday I joined WW at work. I hope I can do it:o

Keep up the great work everyone:hyper:

Sundie

Hey fellow trainers - I took a day off today - kind of thought I would BUT it's not stopping me from committing to a successful September!

Cheryl - I am in - for the "let's try it full force" I started last night with the no eating after 7pm - I was hungry this morning ::yes:: but now I got that going again and

I just pledged to exercising 1200 minutes in Sept, too! I am a bit off my stride this week (just had a smallish cyst near my collarbone) removed yesterday and so no weights for a few days. I must say as the day as gone on today it has become a bit more "ouchy" but by tomorrow morning - I say "it's September" and time to go, go, go ::yes:: toward that goal!!

TammyNC is going to be "hanging around" again too. It will be good to see her and MelanieC back with us again :hyper: I saw where MelC is going on a short vacation so she might not appear just yet - just know what I have read.

So - cyber "high five" to everyone and a great big woohoo September here we come! Onward toward that Mickey/Donald medal - there's no stopping this group now - we got the mo-jo on our side
:wave2:
