Marathon Training Thread for 6/21-6/28

Got out this AM and walked 43 minutes. I know I have picked up my pace because this same path used to take me 48+ minutes. Progress, huh? WE WILL NOT BE SWEPT!!

Karen, good for you for laughing at the pain!! Hang in there adn I hope that your next walk is painless! I'm like you, I so enjoy reading the daily thread! Just starts my day off on the right foot!

tw1nsmom, welcome and congrats on losing a few pounds!! Keep us updated on how things are going for you!! Time crunches are so hard to work around!!

Krista, you're down to about 3 days now, aren't you? Gee, I wish I were going!! Yes, summer is so hard for me because of the heat. I was thinking this morning about last Fall when I had to transition from short sleeves to long and then to a sweatshirt!! Bring on the sweatshirt!! I'm ready for cooler weather!!lol

Colleen, have a blast on your Disney trip!! Sounds like you needed that day off when you skipped your run. We all have to learn to listen to our bodies more!! Let us know about the trip when you get back!

LAWalz23- welcome to the thread!! I'm excited to see our list growing! There are several of us working on our times and still needing to get them down a bit. We will do it and WE WILL NOT BE SWEPT! I think from what I've read adn the tips posted here, that endurance is the first to work on (length) and then speed. We've still got plenty of time.

Cheryl, congrats for making your exercise ROUTINE! Isn't that what the "wish" thread is about? AND working toward the marathon to boot. Yeah on getting your ressies. I need to call WDW to get mine, too!!

Have a great day everyone!!

~~Beth

Katiebelle- you posted while I was posting...congrats on getting in a mile yesterday! Keep up the good work!!

you GUYS are awesome!! (no more girlie remarks and my apologies terry ;))

so motivating!! I need a flow chart to keep my thoughts organized!

trola -- orthotics in mail to you today -- i hope they are good for you. if not, no sweat, they were free to me and worth a try for you!

who ran 9 miles??!!oh wait! more importantly who is going to disney in less than like 4 days!!! two of us!!! :earseek: both of you have a fabulous time! are you meeting at all?

ok - 9 miler -- that is way fantastic!!!! cyber high five! are you running the full? I completed 6 miles today (walking/jogging intervals with DN -- we walked .5 mile then did intervals of jogging .5 mile/walk .25 mile etc and walked the last .5 mile home) so totally we ran 3 of the 6 miles. or something like that. i kept up her running pace again and my gluts were still sore from monday!

karebear -- why are you in so much pain? are you ok?

welcome to all the new comers!! i apologize that i will lose track -- i'm too scatterbrained and usually i'm sitting here on the dis boards when I really should be doing something else so I pretend i'm just here a minute ;)

btw -- AEG/evansmom and myself have our room ressie at CBR :)

OH HOORAY! I have been MIA due to my own guilt... *sigh*

BUT! Today I made the turnaround...

I did Monday's run today, playing a little bit of catch up. I did the WHOLE THING, too. None of this pansy style I ran past some lilacs and now my body isn't happy kind of stuff... NO NO NO. I did all 54 minutes, run 3 walk 1, plus stride drills. I am not gonna go halfway anymore. With less than 200 days left, I need to give this baby my all! So, now I'm back on track. Thanks for being so motivating. I read all of your posts and as soon as I was done I put on my little running shorts and top and told myself that nobody was going to cheer me on if I'm not doing anything myself. So, away I went. And now I'm home, feeling energized, refreshed, and ready for bed.

Tomorrow is DBF's Birthday, by the way. Tomorrow is they day that he finds out that he is going to WDW for New Year's! I hope he's happy! I have been giving him little presents and rhymes as clues all week, but he is completely baffled! I hope I have my camera out to catch the look on his face, because he should be pretty surprised!

Cheryl - I got mail today! It looks like you had a really fun time! I can't wait to go check out HH myself. I'll get there someday... For now, I will dream of the beach!

Keep it up ladies! You will never know the power of motivation that your stories all hold. I hope you have been keeping a journal, because I know that one day I will look back in disbelief at this goal! YIPPEE for all of us! We're on our way!

Ashley:wave2:

Well I did it, I got in my fourth day in a row walking. I got in 30 min. this morning before the rest of the day got hectic. My legs were feeling pretty tired at first but I pushed on and I'm glad I did. I figure with what I walked the last 4 days it was probably about the 13.1 miles of the half marathon but I did it in 4 days not 1. Yikes I have to keep this up, WE WILL NOT BE SWEPT! Tomorrow is a rest day and I'm sure my legs will appreciate it!

Beth that's great progress that you've made shaving 5 minutes off your time! :cheer2: Did you call and make your reservation yet? Where are you staying?

ohMom Great job with your 6 mile walk/jog! :cheer2: It sounds like alot of us are staying at the CBR! I can't wait to meet everyone!

Ashley Great job getting back on track! :cheer2: I love the way this thread motivates me to get out there too. Have fun tomorrow presenting your DBF with that wonderful birthday gift you are giving him! You have to let us all know how it goes. Will he still be at WDW for the marathon to cheer us all on?

Have a good Thursday everyone! Keep on moving :bounce:

Cheryl

Thanks to all you that wrote on the thread today- I got out and did my 2 miles today- and once again I didn't want to because I was afraid m y hip would hurt and in general I had a feel bad kind of a day. So- TYHANKS MY FRIENDS! You have once again spurred me on to getting off my toush and moving. I feel better about myself and just feel better in general for doing it.

I gotta get out of this funk! I actually said I didn't think I coud do the marathon to someone today! UGH!!!

Karen Get out of that funk girlfriend. YOU CAN AND WILL DO THIS MARATHON!!!!!! Remember our motto WE WILL NOT BE SWEPT! We are all here supporting and rooting for you and we all love you. :cheer2: :cheer2: :cheer2:

Have a good day everyone :sunny: I'm off to work now.

Cheryl

I did my mile today and got my Blood sugar down from 196 to 84 ! That is really good (in case you didn't know!)

I'm a slacker today, but I'll be back on the trail tomorrow. Yeah to all of you who have gotten out there today!! You are my inpsiration!!

KAREN, I'm counting on you to walk with me in Jan. We will do this and we will NOT BE SWEPT!! Good for you on that blood sugar level!! You are achieving your goals!

Cheryl, I haven't made my ressie yet. I need to do that, but I need hubby to leave the house while I do. He works shift work and is on vacation for 2 weeks, but when you factor in his days off he will be home for something like 3 weeks!! Yikes!! I'm just not used to him being here ALL the time. He's like that cell phone man on TV that says, "Can you hear me now?" only my hubby's mantra is "What are you going to do now?" Imagine that about 20 times an hour. lol. But, that too can be motivation for me to get out and walk, right?lol Anyway, I will probably just book at the POP since I'm putting all my extra travel $$ into our November trip. Plus POP is the closest to Epcot of all the value resorts.

Ashley, I can't wait to hear about how you will spring the surprse tonight!! You have to fill us in!! New Year's at Disney will be such a magical time!! Will you stay from then until the 1/2, or go home in between?? You have put the remaining 200 days in perspective!!

ohMom, thanks for the orthotics. Can't wait to try them. I'll be waiting by the mailbox!

I feel totally guilty that I didn't walk today. I need to get on that tonight!!

Today I took my first steps toward the finish line! I walked 55 minutes and stretched for 5 when I finished. The high school is .5 miles from the house and has a soft track. My plan is to walk there in the morning and then walk the track and head home again between 6am and 7am, two mornings a week. I plan on staying with the hour, but hopefully I will be able to add additional laps as I pick up speed. (I think I did almost 3 miles today.)Then I will add a longer walk on the weekend. Are there any other red hat ladies who will be walking? (For those of you who don't know, a red hat lady is any lady over 50 who believes in the spirit of the poem-when I am an old woman I shall wear purple and a red hat that doesn't suit me...)

I gave him his birthday present today, and although I did not run, I am still very happy!!!

He said he would LOVE To come to WDW with me!

I leave on Dec. 20th, he will arrive on Dec. 28th.

Here is what I did:

I gave him a gift each day this week, with a little poem.

Gift 1: An Umbrella Tree Plant (closest inexpensive thing I could find to a tree in Target)
Poem 1: This tree is the first of the gifts you'll receive
To celebrate 23 years since your birth.
It's more than a tree, though,
this you should know.
Soon you'll know how much
this tree is worth.

Gift 2: Birthday Hat (cone shaped)
Poem 2: Put on your birthday hat,
you Birthday Boy, you.
It is the next clue on teh way.
To that whicch will be delivered soon
On your big Birthday Day!

Gift 3: Golf Balls
Poem 3: Golf balls for a golf pro
You guessed it, that's you!
But these golf balls have another meaning
That's meant just for you!

Gift 4: Sand Castle Mold
Poem 4: Houses can come in all shapes and all sizes
Just another clue about what your big prize is.

Gift 5: Toy Airplane attached to Mickey Happy Birthday Balloon.

So, in case you didn't catch it (he didn't)...

Tree - Animal Kingdom
Hat - MGM Studios
Golf Balls - EPCOT
Sand Castle - Magic Kingdom

Airplane - I'm buying his tickets

Do drive the point home, I gave him a birthday card, a Christmas card (both emphasized the word "together."), and a WDW Post Card with the following on the back:

"You just turned 23, what are you going to do next?"

"You are going to DISNEY WORLD!"

And I included a picture of the 100 Magical Years banners that had the images from the four parks, so he would see what was meant by each gift.

It turned out PERFECT, and I think he even had little happy tears in his eyes. I know I did.

I don't think he will be staying for the marathon, he will probably leave on Friday. Marathon weekend is kind of special because it is the first thing that my brother and I have done just the two of us in well...forever. So, that is his special bonding time.

Anyway, I just wanted to share with all my WISHWalker buddies, because you all mean so much to me, and I like to share that kind of stuff...nobody else understands... Some people just don't understand my love for WDW, and how I can go spend a month of my life in a year. I think they just wish THEY could go to WDW and be a kid again! I know I love it!

Anyway, it's late...

I'm running off to bed, 1 step = 1 mile? What do you all say? This is a big run!

Ashley:wave2:

Ah, the weekend. Everyone is gearing up for their long walks and runs, right? I bounded out of bed at 5AM like Tigger this morning, ready for my walk. Planned an hour+. Got myself together and hit the trail and only 5 minutes into it, the bottom fell out!! So a soggier me came home and made coffee and toast and will wait until tomorrow. It's now stopped raining, but my day has begun so I won't get another chance.

Ashley, thank you for sharing about your special surprise for your DBF! I just love that!! You are quite clever!

Janet, congrats on your walk yesterday!! I love the Red Hat poem. I'd like to walk on a real track so I know exactly how far I'm walking.

Katiebelle, good for you on the walk!! I usually walk longer on teh weekends, too.

Have a great day everyone!

Hi all! just came in from a slow 5 mile run. It was a little humid out there today.

Ashley, that turned out perfectly. I really like all the thought you put into each of the gifts/clues. My birthday's next week if you feel the need to surprise anyone else with a trip to WDW. (hint, hint :teeth: )

Karen, excellent news about the effect walking has on your sugar level. That is even more important than marathon. Don't get bummed out, we all struggle--and we all rebound. Our bodies are learning to do something completely foreign. Expect lots of ups and downs.

Cheryl, if you can figure out a way to get us both to eat right, let me know... I struggle there! Nice job with getting out there consistently. I think making this a habit is the hardest part.

Beth, did you walk? Get out there! Think of it as time away from your hubbie! :p

OhMom, I'm running the half, but dream of the full...I would love to try it but I don't think I have enough "time on the road" yet to do it safely. I've wanted to ask you about the arthritis sign in your signature. I'm assuming one of your children suffers from arthritis? I hope you don't mind me being nosy...

Krista, are you still out there? I go down on Mon. and come home on Fri night. Didn't think about meeting you until OhMom asked. I'll be at Boardwalk. We're going with extended family. My niece is dancing at the MK on Wed (my bday) afternoon.

KatieBell , and HairsprayHon, glad to hear your with us! ::yes::

I've got to get my son up and off to swimming, then basketball camp. See ya!
Colleen

Hi everyone - Happy Friday!!

This has been a @#%&*!!! week for me this week - major family and work issues that have had me wanting to run to the food cabinet......been doing ok with the eating/not eating, but been really bad about the exercise - finally got on the TM last night, and only lasted 1 mile. I guess that's expected since I haven't walked since Sat....need to build up again.

Will try to get in a good walk tomorrow (won't be home until quite late tonight).

Keep up the good work everyone, and welcome to the newbies!

Hello Everyone!

I am leaving tomorrowfor DISNEY!! WoohOOO! YIPEEEE. AHHHHHH!
I went for a walk last night with my DH and I was so excited that the time flew by as we walked.
I haven't been posting that much because I have been crazy at work. It was the last week of school and I was quite upset because I really enjoyed my third graders this year. They were so great!

Ashley - that was an awesome present. Do you realize how creative Disney people are..... I am so glad you will be able to share some special time together in the happiest place on earth!
I also have had quite a few people think I was nuts that I want to go to Disney every year!

Colleen - We're staying at POFQ - I'll be wearing my bright green mickey ears on my back pack. If you see me please come up! I have blonde hair and my DH is 6'4 - so if you see a blonde with a very tall man - say hi!

Karen - Keep up the awesome work.

Welcome to our new friends.

I'll catch up with you all in a week. Good luck and keep walking!

Krista:earsgirl:

TGIF :teeth:

well the forecast called for a stormy morning, so like a non-in-training kind of gal that I am, I stayed up til 11 p.m. (wwaaayyyy past my bedtime ;)) and watched Without A Trace. anyhoo - alarm went off and not a drop falling so I drag myself up and out the door to meet DN. She's dragging too and says "should we just walk" so we just head out powerwalking. Of course about a mile+ into it she's like "want to jog some like a mile" so we start jogging and end up jogging three miles! now that's better. then we walked the mile+ home - all in just over an hour.

i pushed myself a bit the last jogging mile, usually I tend to slow down and I kept telling myself to keep my pace up. DN was getting further and further away. For the first time we lost each other! She's so cute and paranoid and I hear her yelling my name. Mind you it's like 7:10 a.m. in our development  I'm sure there were some unhappy campers. She said she saw a car take off and was worried they took me! she's so cute. they were probably trying to get as far away from the crazy jogging ladies as they could::yes:: She even knew it was a new Pontiac, etc incase she couldn't find me. Well as you figure we found each other (I'm yelling back too by this point)

I did 10 mins or so with my hand weights/pushup/a few abs. I really need to get better about working some strength training on my other workout days.

Ashley -- I LOVE LOVE LOVE what you did for your DBF!! For our first trip to WDW 12/99 I made a treasure hunt for my DD (2nd grade then) with clues to figure out we were going too! its way too fun!!!! he's a lucky guy!

trola - i was a slacker yesterday too! i did get some misc things done around the house and that was good. i'm sooooo bummed you got a soaking on your walk!

mishoe -- just looking forward right? no more guilt on bad choices (I made a few yesterday too) onward and downward and forward!

pixiechick -- i don't mind your asking at all:wave: I put the arthritis foundation symbol as my avatar and the link to the website in my signature in hopes that follks will notice and find info or support if they need it -- and to spread the word on the effects of arthritis on our children as well as adults. My youngest DD, Paige, was dx with Juvenile Rheumatoid Arthritis (JRA) last Feb. while in kindergarten. She experienced an initial flare-up then and had her second big flare this past March. She has begun new meds and her labs show improvement over the past month or so. Summer came at the right time for her.

you all would be so proud of me. Paige began steroid IV infustions in April, which is a 2-3 hour appointment sitting on our duffs. The clinic is gearing up for a big remodel and I told the nurses they needed to put in a couple treadmills for parents/caretakers to use during the infusions. She loved my idea and gave me the CEO's name and address. Yesterday I mailed a very professional (I hope!) letter with my idea and the health benefits for both the parents and children (stress relief, good example of exercise for our children, etc etc) The kids basically sit in a la-z-boy type chair and watch movies and/or sleep. I almost took my walking shoes once but was uncomfortable leaving her for a long period of time, plus we are talking downtown columbus ohio here - not a real safe place to be out strolling. we'll see, I don't expect anything but at least I put a word out.

off to finish my activity by cleaning the bathrooms! and hitting a much needed shower. sorry for the loooonnngggg post!!!:grouphug:

Yesterday was a planned rest day for me and then today became an unplanned rest day also because I got out of work late and by the time I picked up DD from the sitters and we got home and had dinner I was starving so I ate a big dinner and by the time it digests it will be too dark to walk. I plan on getting in some good long walks this weekned though so hopefully that will make up for missing 2 days in a row.

Karen WOW that is great that your walking has brought your bloodsugar down so much!!!!!!!! See that is another reason to stick with this and get out of that funk! Are you feeling better?? I hope so because remember YOU CAN DO THIS and WE WILL NOT BE SWEPT! Remember too how your trainer has been telling you that you still have plenty of time to keep training and that you will be ready. Please don't give up on this, take it 1 step at a time!

Janet Wow you took some great first steps toward the finish line. 55 min. for your first walk is great! Will you be wearing a red hat when you walk the 1/2:D ?

Katie Lets make sure we get those long walks in this weekend!

Ashley I am so happy your birthday surprise turned out perfect! How exciting for you and your DBF. I love your poems and the way you presented it. Thanks for sharing! That is so neat that you and your brother will be having this special time together too! I definitely know what you mean about some people not understanding your love for WDW. I know alot of those people too, they think we are crazy for going so often. DH is even starting to say we have been there enough for awhile, which is why I am leaving him and DD home in Jan. and traveling with a friend for the marathon. I am also trying to talk another friend into going with me to the Nights of Joy in 2005 and I have had the thought I might want to make this marathon a yearly thing. I am definitely addicted to WDW and have to get my "fix" LOL.

Beth Don't you just hate it when you get up early like that and then the weather doesn't cooperate. Sending you some PD

:wizard: for some good walking weather this weekend!

Colleen Great job getting in a 5 mile run even though it was humid! I'll keep working on a way to get us to eat right LOL. If I ever get it figured out to do that consistently I'll definitely let you know LOL. Have a GREAT time at WDW!!!!!!!!!!!

Monica I hope things are getting better and you have a better week next week! :wizard: That's great that you did good keeping your eating ubder control when you were stressed. I have a big problem with that. Keep on walking and you'll buid back up quickly!

Krista I'm not sure you'll see this before you leave but if you do have a GREAT time at WDW!!!!!!!!!!! It sounds like you've had a crazy week so what a great way to unwind.

ohMom Great job turning your powerewalk into a jog when you were tired! I love how your DN was concerned about you disappearing. I sometimes get paranoid when I walk by myself without the dog, especially when I am on the bike/jog trail where there are alot of trees so Ialways make sure I have my cell phone with. I'm not sure if it would do me any good if someone jumped out of the trees but I just feel better having it lol. Good for you for writing to the CEO at the clinic about your idea for the treadmills. I think you have a great idea there and even if they don't do anything with it at least you gave it a try!

Have a great weekend everyone!! Keep on walking!!
:sunny:

Cheryl

I walked 1/2 mile with my DDs and DH tonight, then I did one mile on the treadmill after I finally got the DDs to sleep. I was proud of myself because I was able to take 2 minutes off my time for one mile tonight. My treadmill has a built-in incline, which makes it more difficult to go fast. I had a bad day on WW and could not resist a Starbucks Java Chip Frappacino. Tomorrow I will try to do 3 miles. princess:
