Marathon Training THread 11/21-11/28

Okay quick update ! I've been lurking because I have fallen off the training plan.
Just a few things in my way. No illness or injuries though. I am hosting Thanksgiving at my home. There will be 17 of us for 3 days and 30 on Thanksgiving. On Fri. 11/26 I am planning a 5K Turkey Trot for the food Shelf ( This is really has stressed me out. Never again! All weekend we (DH and I) put up towel bars, shelving, lights, doorknobs,etc... and cleaned the garage. I tried to get some of the house cleaned up and ready but had to be handy man assistant every 10 minutes. Today my DH had hernia surgery so I was home from work and did a bit of baking and straightening. Tomorrow I do the guest room and clean the bathrooms. Should be just about ready. Once I get through Fri., my DD will be 15 on Sun. and I am doing a surprise Birthday Party inthe afternoon. The following weekend is my DD (17) winter formal. I think I can relax a bit after that if i make it! Needless to say my training has taken a back seat. Can wait to be selfish about me again. Oh, and in the middle of all this I turned 46.

Hope you all have a Fabulous Thanksgiving! i'lll be back at it soon.

HAPPY B-day BECKIE!!! It sounds like you have been a busy girl- but I'm glad you haven't forgotten about the marathon!

I ahve a 5 miler walk today. And- I've had some folks asking about the Dr's visit yesterday and as far as I know, it was good. I did the treadmill test and the bottom number on my blood prssure actually went down the longer and harder I walked. He said he doesn't see that very often, but that iut was good! My BP started at 124/90 and ended at 164/68! How the heck does that happen??!?!? I'm still waiting for the results from the ultrasound. But I think it was fine. So now I can BE FRE and not worry. One thing the Dr. did tell me was that when I walk he wants me to walk at a speed that would make it difficult for me to have a conversation! He said he knows that's contrary to what the trainers say, but for your hearts good- that's what he suggests. When I walk, I'm never out of breath- are you? I guess maybe I'll try bumping ity up a little. Gee- I think if I did I might just get that 16 minute mile!

Meme- I sent you another email! I like what you've done with the logo.

I did an easy 2 mile mall walk yesterday. My hip started hurting a little about halfway through, so I took it really slow. During the week I don't really do miles, just times. Today I have a 45 minute walk on the schedule. I have to get my grocery shoping done while the kids are at preschool, but I'm going to try to fit the walk in there somewhere. If I can't manage it, I'll do a stationary jog on the mini-trampoline tonight.

Becky -:bday:

Karen - I'm glad to hear that the tests went smoothly, I hope the results are what you and your doctors want to see.

My Thanksgiving is going to be pretty calm. I can't imagine 30 people! My only stressful event over the next couple of days will be taking the children for their Christmas picture tommorrow at JcPenney's. I'll let you know how it goes.

I agree sort of--I would do this for your short days--helps increase the oxygen flow--I would NOT do it on your long days...it'll tucker you out. The harder you work on the shorts--the easier (and less time) it takes to do your longs. We have been training this way for several weeks...I HATE it immensely--b/c it tires me out during the week...but sure enough--my pace does improve over the weekend.

The reason I would stay from it on your long days is--that you might burn through all your energy too quickly and then end up bushed and overtime on the pace. I wouldn't want the sweepers to catch you :)

Yippee for Karen, glad to hear the good news.

Lisa, I am so thankful that you have been providing this great expert information.
Happy Birthday Becky!:Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc

Meme, thanks for doing those logos, I love what you have done so far!

10nis, Welcome aboard! Great info you have for us too. Thanks. Will you share your name with us?

TriMom, MaryK, I liked the dress up runner thing too. What a fantastic aid.

Have had a busy couple of days again. Will not get in my time tonight. I am absolutely tired. Tomorrow DH and I head to the gym after work so that will be a good end to my day. I plan on doing some sort of version of my own Turkey Trot on TG as we will be having a small gathering at our place and DH must work so we will wait til late afternoon before serving.

Karen, I sent you a PM with my email and AIM name. If anyone else wants it let me know. We will get through this down time this weekend!

Good Wednesday Morning Everyone,

Happy Birthday Becky!! Go ahead and celebrate.

MeMe--the logo is awesome!! I can't wait to transfer it onto a shirt to see what it will look like.

Last night, Sears finally came to fix my old treadmill. The guy fixed it with a screw and a drill. He said that if something else goes wrong its not worth fixing because it would cost hundreds of dollars and I could buy a new one for a bit more than that. I did walk on it last night and it works fine. I went 1 mile in 25 minutes. I was very disappointed in that time and couldn't figure out why I was so out of breath and finding it difficult to walk at the 2.5mile pace. After I was finished I figured out that it is set to the number three (highest) level for elevating the treadmill. I'd been walking up hill all the time. That made me feel better though. This morning I was up at 5:30 and did the 2 mile WATP. Took some Tylenol and came to work. I feel good now but I know that later on I'll be dragging my butt.

I was motivated to get back on track because of something other than the marathon. While I was on vacation a co-worker (38 years young) was found dead in his apartment. He had Type 1 diabetes and had had the flu. He had lapsed into a diabetic coma and died. Today is the memorial service and it will be a rather somber day around here.

That news made me have a better vacation because it brought to the forefront how precious our time with family is. I consider all of you to be my extended family as we train together to take on this monumental goal.

Have a great training day everyone!!:sunny:

Hi all:wave2:

Only managed a 2.5 yesterday due to time again:crazy: And today it is raining so we'll see.

Lily, I also want to do my own turkey trot- hope to be out early and done early - how far are you going????

Susan, what terrible news about your co-worker:( sorry to hear. The logo I sent is not the final one so don't get it transferred yet. With everyone's input I think we're going to do a donald logo for the 1/2, a mickey logo for the full or combine them both for WDW marathon.

What does everyone prefer? and for the back, if you decide you want something on the back, the brooms from fantasia & "we will NOT be swept!"

Have a wonderful Wednesday

Hi everyone. My computer at home won't connect to my internet ... something about a dead battery for the clock timer messed up my Windows drivers  :badpc: And work has been really crazy so no time to DIS :( Last week, I did everything BUT my 4 mile brisk on my so-called "long day". I'm OK with that because I have no problems doing 4 miles in an hour. This week, however, started out OK with a 40 minute power walk at lunch, a 30 minute super-power walk at night, and then Curves for x-training yesterday. Unfortunately, I will be lucky to get to Curves one more time (Fri morning) because life is getting in the way yet again. I'm frustrated, but I know that a few days off of training isn't going to undo all of the wonderful progress I've made.

Went to my Dr. yesterday for yearly physical. He did a 1/2 in the spring and just ran the Detroit full marathon in October. We had a good chat about some things because I know the guy that he trained with. He thought that our group of Wisher's and the support that we offer each other was awesome!

Congrats to all, and good wishes to everyone that has reason to celebrate this week! Stay healthy and uninjured folks ... it's getting close!

10nis ... welcome to our thread! I hope that you'll continue to share your information with us!

Hi everyone,
My training has been on hold for the past week due to that car accident last Wednesday. I was planning on a walk tonight, but it is pouring rain and cold, so I guess I'll get back on track tomorrow.
I just wanted to wish all my American friends a happy Thanksgiving. Enjoy yourselves! And good luck to all of you going shopping on Friday. I've never experienced it, but I've heard all about it and it sounds

OK- Who knows what to do for shin splints????

Hi Karen,

From my physio, when I had shin splints a year or so ago:

Shin splints is pain in the lower, front leg. The injury is an overuse injury and can be caused by running on hard surfaces or running on tip toes. If you over pronate then you are also more susceptible to this injury.

Symptoms can include:
Tenderness, Lower leg pain, swelling, lumps and bumps, pain when the toes are bent downwards and/or a redness in the skin.

Treatment:
Rest, apply ice initially, wear shock absorbing insoles (Dr Scholls are good), do non weight bearing exercises, take anti inflammatories, stretch, massage an anti inflammatory gel into the muscle, try a different pair of shoes.

Rachael

Karen : ice and rest have worked for me. biggest issue was getting fitted for decent shoes. I think you've already done that though.
As far as "pushing it", I do 1 steady run (a decent pace, just hard enough) 1 speed workout (comfortably hard, push it but not to the point where it hurts) and 2 easy workouts around my long run which is done long and slow. Remember, race day "hype" will give you a nice speed boost.

Susan: so sorry to hear about your co-worker...:(

Nancy: hopefully you'll be 100% soon.

No gels or gu for me--"pukey"... I use honey or honey "stinger shots" (like gel packs) with caffeine. Mostly I run on empty. Even a little food makes me queasy.

"potty use" isn't a big concern for me. Ya gotta do what ya gotta do! When I did Phila. Distance Run in Sept. one woman dropped her shorts literally on the side of the road-the lines for the portapotties were too long. Many of us got to "know" her intimately! :earseek: Bet she didn't lose much time though! :teeth:

Rachael, MaryLiz, Meme, Lily, Lisa, Dawn, Beckie, Debbie, Trimom, Molli, Bev, and 10nis,
Turkey Trot 5k tomorrow. Hoping to finally get below 29 minutes. I'm trying really hard to improve my pace, we'll see!
Happy Thanksgiving !!!

OMG....realized I haven't checked in this week! Didn't get my long walk sunday....thunder, lighting, rain in the morning. But I did manage to get in my car and go have lunch with nativetxn :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: PF Changs for lunch then a drive over to The Cheesecake Factory for low carb cheesecake!

I'll do a little longer than normal 'regular day' walk tomorrow, since I have the time and want to make some room for shrimp and strawberries (what I'm most looking forward to at our holiday buffet). Then I'll do 8 miles Saturday and 4 miles the weekend after....kind of 'flipping' the M4M schedule. I'll be at Disneyland 12/4-5, so I figure a 4 mile 'workout' will be supplemented with lots of leisure walking too. Then back on schedule for 6 miles/10 miles/8 miles/5 miles/RACE DAY.

Picked up some black chanille gloves and head band, cool max socks and another slightly heavier sock....going to try the two sock trick tomorrow. Figure the black gloves and headband will look best with my lime green WISH scarf! Now I have to hunt down a blanket and the dollar store and look for some Powerade and Snickers Marathon Bars. Hmmmmmm.... maybe I'll WALK to Walmart, it's at least 2.5 miles each way.

It's getting late....better head of to beddie-bye......sleeping is part of training, you know ::yes::

Happy Thanksgiving!

I went out this morning in the sleet and snow to do a 5 mile walk. It was a lovely way to start off my day.
We are home for our holiday and plan to eat around 4 today. All is in a good place right now. DH should be home from work about 3:30.

ibouncetoo--Jackie, we are there from Dec 4-11th any chance for a meet up? Are you meeting others during your stay?

Did 7 miles today--not in my element--I'm in chilly and hilly Atlanta ;). So time probably isn't that great--I'll compare it at home--but hey--at least I burned off the turkey before I ate it!

:hyper: :hyper: :hyper:

Good luck with the shin splits Karebear--the only thing I can offer is to ice your shins post walk each and everytime, and to possibly check your shoes and see if it is time for a new pair or better pair. You've come so far--I hope it is only temporary.

Have a great weekend!

Happy Thanksgiving!

We're having a lovely quiet Thanksgiving. My walking has been a little slow this week. My left knee and hip have been hurting a little bit so I've been taking it easy. My eating has been going really well though, especially considering it's a holiday week. For dinner tonight I had turkey, cranberry sauce made with Splenda, pureed cauliflower, acorn sqash w/ I can't believe it not Butter, Splenda & cinamon, and a tiny taste of corn spoon bread that I made for Dh and the kids. Later I'll be having sugar free pumkin custard. Dinner was actually very yummy and so far I don't feel deprived.

I hope you're all having a great Thanksgiving!

Dawn

 Happy Thanksgiving, to all my American friends.

I didn't get anything extra done yesterday-went to see a high school production of Joseph and the Amazing Technicolor Dreamcoat---still my favourite! :)

Today, I did a Curves workout....so THAT's good! :teeth: It's pretty yucky right now, but after I got my work done, I didn't feel like going out and waking up. Mornings would be better, methinks.

Karen, since I've watched my slow warm-up, I've noticed an improvement in the shin pain. Don't train too fast!

Beckie, a belated :bday: to you!

Dawn, it looks like you are taking care of yourself. Good for you!

Lily! WOW!!! You rock, hun!

You guys are doing great. I may not get a chance to reply, but I always read what you are doing. . .and you are my inspiration to keep on going. Thank you!!

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!

Well- I decided to talk to my trainer about my pain= and she said it is shin splints (Dawn- pay attention!)
She told me not to walk for the next 2 days, to do calve stretches 10 times a day for 30 seconds each time and to ice and massage the calves3-4 times/day. (Fill a paper cup with water a freexe it- when frozen, peel back some of the paper and use ice to massage calves with) Dawn- you should be doing the same thing. That's what the pain in our calves is. Hopefully, because it just started, we've caught it early and it can repair quickly. OH! She laso said walk on flat surfaces only. She also said to take the walking slow. Shin splints are from walking to far to fast.

Sounds like everyone else here had a very productive trainng day otherwise.

Lily- YOU DA WOMAN!!!! <a href='http://www.smileycentral.com/?partner=ZSzeb008_ZSYYYYYYYYUS' target='_blank'><img src='http://smileys.smileycentral.com/cat/28/28_4_8.gif' border=0></a> Is that waht you looked like???
