Marathon Training Thread 11/14-11/21

Thank you, thank you, thank you, Lily for digging that up. I think that that is JUST what I needed. I promise to read this every day next week to keep motivated-I've been having trouble this week, but that could just be the mental exhaustion of writing report cards. Keep swimming, everyone! We CAN do it!

Lip balm
power bar cut up into bite size pieces
and it has a pouch for my 500ml water bottle, which will have powerade in it.

Rachael

Just need to add a hotel key and some cash and kleenex and it sounds right to me. What's the cash for, you may ask? Well, it's for the taxi ride back from the hospital...LOL...that's a joke girls!

Auntmeme, I sent you a PM with my e-mail address. If you sent me one, I may have deleted it with the tons of SPAM I get. So, will you PM me and tell me what the 'sender' name will be and what the subject line will say, so I don't accidentely delete it?
I plan on booking convention tickts this weekend when I get the final OK from sister.

I also got the OK from Dreams Unlimited to change my room to an AP (if what I want is available). Seems we have enough in our block, so we're safe there. I'll save about $60 if I can transfer to AP...that's a couple of nice meals with WISH pals ::yes::

I'm off to read the link Lily gave us. Have a great day everyone.

It's official....

I'll be at Pop Century 1/7 for three nights ($164) then Wilderness Lodge 1/10 for three nights($421)! Grand total $585 including tax.::yes:: BOTH new resorts for me, so one of my WDW travel criteria met (new resorts/new restaurants/new experiences).

....think the 1/2 marathon counts as a new experience?

:Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce: :Pinkbounc :bounce:

Now if the blasted airlines would start doing some deals

Karen - Glad to hear things went well with the heart monitor.

Terry - how did you make out at the Dr's today? I hope everything is okay.

Just read the link (From Citrus Swirl Diser--I can remember your photo, but not your name  ).

Wish I was doing their pasta dinner (or at least my husband would wish). My pasta party dinner is $30--but I think it is free for me--had to pay for hubby and DD4. We're having it at EPCOT. I guess I'll find out when I get their why it is 3x the price .

I am now very very very very very very very Excited...

I need to go shopping at Goodwill and value thrift and my church thrift store.

Just think--it'll be our own AMAZING race (hooked on that show since season 1).

Hi Tiger Lily thanks for the link - great info! Where is our pasta dinner????

For those that I emailed the logo too, my email is JL1171 and the subject is marathonlogo. I have come across a few other graphics so maybe I can make them not so grainy when I enlarge. I want to hit a comp store this weekend and look for official Disney software. I did use some lime green for the font color but will need to change as I ordered the lime green shirt, did anyone else get a lime green shirt? I'll be in WDW in 7 weeks :Pinkbounc :bounce:

Maryellen- I sent you an email about the logos. If you don't do the font inlime green- just do it in black. Good job girlie!!

I don;t think there is a pasta dinner sponsered by WDW this year- I didn't see anything about it- did nayone else???

You can ask on the Packet thread to see if the packet listed any information regarding it.

Jackie! We will be at POP Century too! I will keep my eyes peeled for you! :)

Nancy, thanks for asking about the doctor. She says I am having a small flare-up. Not sure if it is a new exacerbation or an old one, but it isn't significant to treat. I have an Rx for some steriods if things get worse over the holidays. She gave me the okay to continue training on a month to month basis, but I need to go to see my primary doctor because my blood pressure was high. Really high. I have never had high blood pressure so I am not sure what the problem is... it was fine in June.

I am scheduled to walk 7 miles this week. Not sure if I should or shouldn't. If I do, I know I will be going much slower than usual. I will be calling the primary doctor in the am to make sure he is okay with me walking with the high b/p.

Thanks for the fanny pack list! I like that!! Is everyone planning on carrying a water bottle? I am trying to decide on that. I do when I train, but there aren't water stations around the lake. ;) I just don't want to carry too much stuff.

Hey! We want to see that Niagra Marathon pic! Can we? Please?? :)

good morning everyone -- just sitting here sipping coffee, eating Kashi cereal and enjoying my DAY OFF! yes!

yesterday I did 8 miles in 1 hr 55 mins. i was pleased with that.

not much to report in really -- much to do today so PD to all for a great walk/run and fantastic weekend!!

ok - i don't mean to be anal but i tried to clarify this and this was the response I got:

(from me..........) -- but is the marathon considered a "meeting"??

(from Disney)
Hello Molli,

Thank you for visiting DisneyMeetings.com. Marathon participants are not considered a meeting or convention here at Walt Disney World. It is actually considered a sporting event. Since you are participating in a sporting event here at Walt Disney World, you are eligible in taking advantage of all the special packages, which would include special ticket options that are offered through the Walt Disney Sports Reservations. Please feel free to browse through our sports web site, which is www.DisneySports.com for more information on special packages.

Thank you again for your e-mail, and have a Magical Day!

Thank You,

Disney Online Member Services

now the reason I wanted to confirm that the marathon was considered a "convention" or "meeting" was reading this in fine print on the Disney site, page listing the different tickets when you click on "purchase now" and then "more info"

Tickets are not available for purchase at Walt Disney World® Theme Park ticket windows and are valid for use only on the specific dates of the meeting/convention/wedding. Tickets valid 10 days from first use. Date of first use must be on or before December 30, 2005. Verification of meeting/convention/wedding participation is required. Tickets are valid during any of the Theme Parks' regular operating hours. All prices include applicable Florida state sales tax. Offer is subject to change without notice

call me paranoid??

Hi all!

Well I finally did it. This morning I walked 8.7 miles in 2 hours 17 minutes and 17 seconds! That works out to an average of 15.78 miles. It's the longest I've ever walked! That first mile was still excruciatingly slow (at least 20 minutes), so I have to work more on stretching and warming up, but I'm starting to feel like I can really do this.

OhMom - Your walk time is fantastic! I can't remember do you walk, run, or wog?

Terry & Jackie - KI've mentioned this before, but I'm going to be at POP too. Maybe we can meet to take the bus to the start.

I hope everyone is having a great weekend!

Dawn

tw1nsmom -- That is an AWESOME pace--my walk paces are in the 16-18 range--I tried walking 4 miles on Monday and was over the allowed pace--that was with me starting out running (changed to walking due to wind conditions).

OhMom--ditto on the pacing--excellent--13.22 minute mile :sunny: Most impressive ::yes::

**You know you're a marathoner (or halfsey) when you consider 10 miles (Full) or 5 miles (edited from short to half--b/c I meant half--but was thinking ahead to the end of this sentence--MANY apologies!!!!) to be a SHORT distance.

Sentence with edit should read: You know you're a marathoner (or halfsey) when you consider 10 miles (Full) or 5 miles (Half) to be a SHORT distance.

**You know you're a marathoner (or halfsey) when you can go to a restaurant after your long distance day to chow down BEFORE you showered and WITHOUT deoderant and have no qualms about doing so.

**You know you're a marathoner (or halfsey) when you are willing to consume a product that is named based on description--GU anyone?

**You know you're a marathoner (or halfsey) when you are excited to get a gadget that calculates your pace and distance for you (GPS anyone?)

**You know you're a marathoner (or halfsey) when you think it might be FUN to use your legs to go 26.2 or 13.1 miles when most people use a car to do that.

**You know you're a marathoner (or halfsey) when you can happily and confidently ignore the low carb craze :) :) :) :) :) :)

Boy am I tired...

Did my 16 miler today. Today is the first time where towards the end, my legs felt like lead weights--it was actually more painful to walk than run--so I was more inclined to keep on going at the end.

I did 16 miles in 3 hours 16 minutes--My pacing is about less than a 5 h 30 m marathon---let's hope I can keep this up, it looks like I will beat my signature goal of 6 hours :Pinkbounc

I feel like my butt has been giving a beating--and someone has been torturing my legs---Our next biggie is 20 miles on December 11th--until then we are alternating 14s and 16s. Next weekend I get a little bit of a "break"--I'm running a half-marathon. That'll be you guys in less than 2 months!!!

Okay--I need to shower--until I started training--I never knew that I could smell soooo bad--I feel so sorry for the other customers when we go to Panera bread :crazy2:

Have a great weekend and Happy Thanksgiving--and for whomever is keeping track--I didn't meet the sweets challenge!!!!

I'm thinking of trying between Thanksgiving and Christmas--except for the long days (a cookie goes a long way to refueling a 1500-2000+ calorie burn!!!!). Anyone game for a new challenge!!! (With long days being the only cheat day--for energy's sake!).

FYI--one of our 16 milers today was able to know (with her handy dandy wrist watch that did it for her) that she burned 1886 calories today    . I'm shorter and weigh less than her--so I figure I must be somewhere in the 1500s. Just imagine all the calories you are burning--what an awesome little tidbit to keep you motivated ;)

I'm planning on carrying a water bottle ::yes:: and refiling it with the cups at the water stations--My water breaks and Gu breaks don't necessariliy coincide with the stations--I discovered it was nice to have it today even though water is set out by our coaches.

Terry, Jackie and Dawn - I am also at POP for the marathon weekend - I like the idea of catching the bus together.

I will be carrying a water bottle with me - it'll have powerade in it. They have powerade at the stations during the 1/2 but I am not sure how they mix it, if it will be too much powder and not enough water or not enough powder and too much water for my liking. So I will carry my own, and drink their water.

Also I like to have some fluids with me because I am always worried about what if I need a drink, and I am not near a station?

running 7 miles today or tomorrow.

I did it too Tw1nsmom!! I went 9 miles today in 2:38- about a !17:18 minute mile. Doesn't hit the 16 minute mile, but I DON"T CARE!!!! I'm so excited that I even did 9 miles at all!! WOOOOHOOOO!!!!! And ya know what else?? I really do feel ok! A little tired, but not bad! How about everyone else? Do you feel exhausted after 9 miles???

I learned alot doing this walk today. My DH and I started walking at 9 am- it was 37 degrees out and windy. I had capris, a short sleeve shirt and a sweatshirt on. I brought gloves and the sweat shirt has a hood. All those things were good thiongs to have as I used them all. But when I took the sweatshirt off, the short sleeved shirt was not enough protection for my arms- so next week I'll try walking with the short sleeved short and a long sleeved shirt and a sweat shirt and see how that works. I took 2 bottles of water with me and 2 power bars that I cut up. The power bars were plenty- I ate every 30 minutes. I could've used more water- but I can carry my water and use WDW water when we go by stations, so I think we'll have enough with what I carry for myself. I wore my fanny pack and packed it with everything I needed in it- including tissues which came in very handy! I used my chapstick too. Jim carried a back pack that carried the sweatshirts when it came off and the camera. I also understand now, why people want those mylar blankets when they're done because I was cold.... and I STILL am!

I feel so good about finishing this thing!!

Lisa- good job with your mileage! I'm so impressed that you can RUN all that way! WOW!!!!

Dawn- GREAT TIME!!! Hooray for you! Isn't it satisfying to KNOW you can do it! Maybe we won't be at the back of the line after all!!!

Mom- GREAT TIME for you as well!! Let's keep things steady and we will ALL finish this is no time! I really don't want to call you paranoid- because I see where your concern comes from. Do you happen to belong to AAA? We have great rates here in Oregon for tickets from AAA. If you need help just let me know- I can purchase them for you.

Terry- really glad to hear that your flare up isn't too serious. If you can walk- and can't do all the miles at once, split it up! That's what my trainier says to do. She says it doesn't really matter that you do them all at once-= just as long as you do them in the same day. Would that help you at all?? Be sure to get that hig BP fixed! It's easy enough to treat, so don;'t woryry to much about it.

Congratulations Karen!!!:Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc :Pinkbounc I feel as though we've reached a milestone. I mean we've walked 2/3 the distance of the race. If we can do what we did today on race day, then we'll definitely be able to finish.

I forgot to say what I had in my pack today. I usually don't carry anything with me but decided to start practicing. I had water, stopwatch, MP3 player (I know I can't have this during the race), and Incredibles fruit chews.:p I tried power bars but they were all disgusting to me. At the last minute I read the back of the kids snack box and realized that the fruit chews had the right amount of sugar carbs and tasted a whole lot better than my other options. I thought the superhero candy was ironically appropriate. My kids think they get special powers when they eat them so...you never know ;) . I also checked out their individual bags of raisinettes, and they look like they could do the trick too. They have an added plus of providing me with a chocolate fix I don't ussually get on South Beach. I don't think that I'm going to carry water with me during the 1/2 marathon. I'll have it during the pre-race/warm-up time, but it was just too heavy to carry during my walk. I'll just have to grab my water at the water tables.

I did it!! I did it!! 16 MILES!!!

I finally recovered from my nasty cold. No training for me all week. This made me very nervous about my 16 miler today, But it was actually awsome. I finished the run in 3:20 min. :-)hyper: the same time as last week's 14 mile run!!!!) I also think I should get some time credit because my route had me crossing a major busy road twice, a railroad track twice, and a slightly busy road 6 times. Which makes my route sound awful, but if I do this I get to run on a riverside greenway and through the Stones River Civil War Battlefield. It's actually really pretty.

I felt really good today. I kept a fairly even pace, and I wasn't wiped out at the end. In fact I asked myself if I could run 10 more miles. I answered myself yes, but not in these shorts. (Bad case of running rash)

I'm so proud of everyone - Keep up the good work!

Way to go TriMom!!!! This'll sound weird--but try Desitin Diaper ointment on that rash (I mean--it's what it's for, right? So what if it isn't on a baby's tushy)--I find it works like a charm--I used it when I got those rashes way back in the beginning when my thighs were rubbing a little more than I liked. I put the ointment on ASAP...and then just kept applying it when it wore off. By the next run--it cleared. I find the tech shorts are best--any short that doesn't absorb the moisture so easily--all my rashes were in cotton shorts. Running shorts work really well b/c they have lots of room and tend not to rub against your thighs.

I think I will fall asleep EASY tonight!!!

And for clarification--I am proud of my runs....

But I do run/walks--don't want to take any undue credits!
I run 9 and walk 2 (minutes, not miles ;)). Towards the end though--the walk breaks were more trouble than they were worth--my lead weight legs just wanted to keep on trucking and the pacing wasn't all that bad--we will see how my 20 goes and make the final determination if it is a run to the finish after my legs become too heavy to want to walk. (Sounds weird don't it!!!)

Got another " you know you're a marathoner"....

**You know you are a marathoner (or halfsey) when, after a long run, you eat like a football player and not feel the least bit guilty!

Lisa- I like your last "You know you're a marathoner when...." It describes me so well right now!!

I know I mentioned it before, but I am FREEZING!!!! Is this normal after you've walked long distances?? I've taken a VERY hot shower and been in my warm jammies and under the covers and I am still freezing! BRRRRRR!
