Ok everyone.... if you haven't started training yet, now is the time! I asked a few ladies if they would like a thread to report on their training, share info etc. and they said yes... so this is gonna be the place to do it.
About 4 weeks ago I met with a professional that trains people for marathons. They have worked with amatuers and professionals to help increase their times. Each month I get a training schedule from them and have to report back what I did on a daily basis. I am willing to share what I learn if you are interested, including posting the training schedule I have been assigned- just let me know if you're interested.
TIP of The WEEK:
ALWAYS LEAVE YOURSELF WANTING TO WALK MORE.
Stick with the schedule you have found for yourself (through reading books, internet etc.) . In the beginning it may seem too easy for you and that you certainly could do more. BUT- you do not want to overdo and get sick of it too fast. Always leave yourself wanting to walk more!

ahhhhh........great words of wisdom. I have not considered myself "training" at this point for that very reason! i get bored and burnout!

I have started a program from a Muscle/Fitness HERS magazine that is 8 weeks long and best suited for gals who exercise but want to transition into jogging. I have a neighbor commited with me and we meet three mornings a week. so far so good -- we are on week 2

I would be very interest in what your trainer says, keep us posted, and seeing your training schedule. thank you!

Hi Karen!!

I just sent you a PM.

Haven't started the official training yet, but walked 2 1/4 miles this past Sat, and have a 6.2 mile walk (with other WISHers) in Doylestown PA on the 8th (so will go farther this weekend on my own).

Need all the motivation/encouragement/knowledge I can get!!!

Thanks, I need to get my mind and body in gear. January will be here before we know it!!!

OhMom- you brought up a good point. There are gonna be several different fitness levels in training for this marathon. For those of you who really are not excercise people, that are relatively excercise-less, then my training schedule will probably be ok for you. My trainer says that my trainig schedule is very conservative because of my health issues and weight ( I am a diabetic, some hip problems and I still have lots to lose- although I'm working on that with a weight loss dietician.) But, she also said that with this schedule I should be ready to go for the half by January. So- if you want a conservative program- you can walk with me- otherwise talk with the others that are more fit then I.... either way- we'll all get good ideas and encouragement with each other.
ONE MORE TIP OF THE WEEK....
Shoes are very important! If your shoes are older then 6-9 mos- GET NEW ONES! My trainer says that running shoes will give you better support then walking shoes. Saturday- I am going to a local shop that fits athletes for shoes and getting my new ones. You should alternate wearing your new and old shoes.

I'm so excited to see this thread up! I registered on Friday for the half, and am so PUMPED! I need to email Kamy about getting involved with the WISH stuff, but in the meanwhile... I need to start training! The tips you've posted so far sound great, and I would love to hear more! I'm so lucky to have found such a wonderful group of supportive individuals! Thanks!

Ashley

Welcome to the thread Ashley- I am happy you are joining us! It is very exciting isn't it? I was in WDW this January for the marathon.... didn't participate, but sat on the Boardwalk watching everyone go by me.... it was so wonderful! Lots of cheering family and people with signs. My favorite was a sign that said "Tiki Bar this way!" It had an arrow pointing towards EPCOT where the race would end for all those people. Whistles, bells, everything you can imagine was making noise cheering for the on coming racers- I loved it!! Please email Kamy ASAP- she'll need that info from you especially if you're gonna need a room.

Is anyone here taking any family or friends to walk with them?
I'm walking with my DH and now my best friend and her DH have registered and they'll be walking with us as well.

Karen -

Yes very interested in your schedule - I agree with you shoe comment and I was surprised to read alternate between wearing new and old shoes - makes sense tho. I found a style I like (got at a local sport store owned by marathon runners - sells mostly shoes) so now I just order the same one on-line (last time saved a bundle, too). I also wear orthodics -do you still think that the alternating idea is needed then? Just wondering?

And, I did my first official 5k last Sat. I finished in 41+ min. I was pretty happy about that. I hope to do at least two (half-marathon distances) this summer, just so that I know I can go have fun at WDW in 2005 and not be "stressed". My goal for the 2005 will be 15 min miles.

I will be checking in and following this thread. Thanks for getting a place to come and support one an another!

And, it will be ohmom, Evansmom and myself - those guys will probably run - me I am just happy walking !

Hi everyone!

I'm so psyched that we're going to be doing a thread like this!!

I'm doing the 1/2 marathon with a friend of mine from Church - a 1st time thing for both of us...great challenge/goal for us.

My little tip re: shoes (from a friend of mine that works in a running store (all thigs about running)) told me that if you can afford it, buy 2 pairs of the same shoe - that way you can alternate them - that way instead of having to change your shoes after 6 months, if you alternate your shoes then you really have 12 months per pair (did that make sense to anyone else? I know what I'm trying to say, but not sure if it came out right  ).

If anyone lives in MD - the runners store is called If a shoe fits (hahaha) in Frederick. PM me if you want the address/phone number/name of my friend). I'm going to go up there probably in a few months to buy newer shoes.

Mishoe- good shoe tip (YES! I understood what you were trying to say).... I'll have to see if I can afford two pairs- they'd probably be just right by the time I needed to walk in January!
Grammy- You can join Mishoe and me in the walker group- we'd love to have you! I have my training schedule for the next 3 days- and then the new schedule will come, but for Thursday - it is walk 25 mins. For Staurday (May 1)- walk 40 minutes. I should get May's schedule in a day or two. For now, my trainer says not to worry about speed, she actually told me to take it at a slow pace... when I walked with her, I had to slow down my natural pace! She said a nice steady stroll is fine for now. She's not so worried about the speed or distance I go right now- just that I enjoy the walk nad get my stamina built up. I am noticing that my stride is naturally quickening nad that to walk for 20 minutes now is no chore at all- it goes by very quickly- and I really am anxious to be abel to walk farther! That's just what she wants!

I can't believe I'm actually doing the marathon!!!!

Good shoe tip. I'll have to get me back to the store to buy my second new pair! Thanks.

Karen, I think that I'll walk along with you. I've been doing Curves and walking, but my knees been a bit troublesome, so, I've eased off a bit...a lot. So I'm ready to go again.

No official training yet, but I'm walking as much as possible! I did the 4.5 miles at the MS walk a week and a half ago, and that was fine - did it in just under 1.5 hrs, so without training, that was a good time.

Now I'm upset with myself. Tuesday night I work late and when I got off the train it was raining, so I decided to try and run/walk home. I would alternate between the two, but the shoes weren't the greatest and now I've hurt my knee. I took the train yesterday (it means about 3/4 a mile each way from the station to and from work, and about 1/3 mile to and from home to the station on that end) and now the knee is really aggravated. I'm hoping advil works and I didn't do anything permanent.

This summer is going to be training central! Just found out my in-laws and my Mom will be coming wtih us. I'm so excited!

:thewave: Yippee! I've been "down" some from doing anything.

My DH (Ted) will be :cheer2: :cheer2: along the way somewhere. So, I will be trekking alone. I don't know what pace I will make, but I do know that I will have my WISH friends along the way and will have no problem "fitting" in wherever there is space because everyone is so friendly here.
:sunny:
Be ready, I will be "group hopping" on the day! Hi fives everyone!

TigerLily- You will not be alone! Like you said- you will be surrounded by lots of us. I hope you stay with our little group for awhile and chat- that'd be fun!

BaileyMouse- Have you had your knee checked? Everything I read says that you should not over do on the knee because it cn totally knock you out of doing the marathon. Please have it looked at so you know you're good to train. We want to see you there walking with us, not standing in the sidelines!!!

Debbie- please do join me with walking. It'll be fun to have some people on the same walking schedule as I'm on. So.... don't forget to walk for 25 minutes today! I usually go to the mall to walk because where I live is so hilly that it's hard on the hip. As it gets warmer and on weekends, DH and I will do out to local parks to walk. Where is everyone else walking?

Hey everyone,

I haven't officially started training yet. I got a treadmill finally though, so that has helped and I have been doing interval training walking 5 min/running 5 minutes and I am at least able to do that and keep a pretty decent pace. I have a lot of work to do though.

Does anyone else get really overwhelmed sometimes when they think about it and wonder "can I really do this?" I get sort of scared and think to myself why did I sign up for it. I know that once I do it I will feel so good about myself. I am sure I will have no trouble at least walking it, and I would like to try running some too.

I will be going all by myself. We are going for 2 weeks in November as a family, so it just isn't feasible to go again in January as a family. Hopefully there will be a few other people who aren't there with families that I will be able to "hang" around with.

I've been working really hard (although I haven't lost a pound!)

I started a walk/run program in mid-January. I couldn't run for longer than 60 seconds, and that was pushing it. I continued to build on that and am now running 4 times a week. Between signing up with an online coach, and really putting some effort into this, I am now up to 4 miles on my normal runs and 5.5 miles on my long runs. By the end of this month, I *should* be up to a 7 mile long run.

I am not athlete, or at least I wasn't... if I can do it, I have complete faith that all of us can do it!

You are all making me feel so much better! I do sometimes feel that overwhelming feeling of .... what if I really can't do it? I know I can, though...The Little Engine that Could. I bought the book Marathoning for Mortals today, by John Bingham and Jenny Hadfield. I really like it, and am excited to read it. It seems to have everything in it possible! I am so excited! Where do I get a WishWalkers Clippie? When is everybody getting down there? What are some of our plans? Do we get to go to Jellyrolls ever? I can't wait to meet you all and get to know you all through this process! We will all do awesome and have fun! Thanks for being so welcoming!

WOW Pixiechick! that's so impressive! I love to hear when people are moving forward. It gives me so much hope that I can do it too! Rioght now I can't evenm imagine walking 3 miles let alone running 7! Good for you. It sure seems to have gone fast for you! Do you feel that way too? I wouldn't worry about the weight. Honestly, with all the runnig you've been doing you're porbably building lots of muscle! HAve you noticed your clothes fitting you differently? Please let us know when you meet that 7 mile goal! We'll ahve a small celebration for you!

Ashley- that's gonna be my motto....

I think I can !

I don't know when everyone else is getting down there, but I'll be there on Friday evening. My flight should get in around 4:30pm. We're staying at BCV's the first 4 days and then gonna move onto WLV's and then a 7 day cruise ! All to celebrate 25 years of wedded bliss with my DH !

There are lots of things that are going to be planned. We will probably list a few choices and see what the majority want to do. If you want to request a trip to jellyrolls- I'll add it to the list and we'll let people vote.

Now- does anyone have any suggetsions for walking music? I'm looking for beginners cd's. thanks all!

Oh- and don't forget "A journey of a thousand miles starts with one step."

I am so excited! I just can't get it out of my mind!

Good workout music... Hmm...
Pour Some Sugar On Me
1000 Miles (does walking music get any better than that?!)
Paradise by the Dashboard Light
Only the Good Die Young
Cecilia

The list goes on and on, but those are the songs I have had stuck in my head tonight... I usually go with anythign I hear at Jellyrolls, but as you may know, I am a bit obsessed!!! I wish I could go there every night when I am down for Christmas! (I'll be in WDW for a LOT of nights!) I will post more songs as I think of them... There are SO many good ones! (Of course, I don't like any modern type rap stuff or whatever, so maybe our tastes our different...we'll see!

Taking my first steps...
Ashley

looks like we both have the same taste in music Ashley- keep the songs coming!
We should add... "These boots are made for walkin' " to the list, OH! and Walk Like an Eygptian (although the beat of this wouldn't exactly be good for walking!) :p
