My DH is thinking about running the WDW marathon this year, it will be his third. We were wondering what the food/beverage stations on the course are like. Specifically, are they close enough together? Do they serve gatorade? Do the food stations have power gel?

Thanks!

Welcome fellow Wings fan!!!! Or is it just Pavel? ;)

Here's a link to the map with teh food and water stations:

They do not do gatorade, they do watered down (half adn half) pPowerade. It is at all water stations.

As for food, we brought our own Gu. They did give out CLiff shots (mile 13?)

They had bananas too (mile 16 & 19?)

They may have had other fruit, but we had our own food, I was afraid to eat anythign I hadn't trained with adn I was a little fuzzy the last 9 miles. ;)

Please tell dh he hsould coem join our weekely training threads!

Finally, someone who understands my name!!
I'm a huge wings fan, not just Pavel. Lids is my abslolute favorite, I'm trying to get my hubby to let me name our first born son 'Nicklas'.

Do you have a link for any of the training threads? He's not running at this moment, one of his groin muscles has separated from his pubic bone, hopefully it won't need surgery and he'll be ready to start training again soon. Unfortunately, his plans for running in the AF marathon in september might not work out, we'll just have to see how it goes..

I think they do a great job with the stations.... 22 of them over the course of 26 miles. And the volunteers who run them do a great job! :thumbsup2

Powerade and water at each station. Carrie's right, they do water down the Powerade, but that's actually a good thing.

I also brought my own GU, but I remember the Cliff Shots at mile 17 (right before AK). Those who tried them.... did NOT like them from what I overheard.

Bananas and fruit at mile 13 and..... somewhere else. I learned you can't peel a banana wearing gloves that easily.

Chocolate kisses at mile 22.5, just before MGM as well.

It's amazing... there are days I can't remember my dog's name, yet a remember aid station contents clear as a bell.... :confused3

The Clif shot they were serving at mile 10 in the HALF was the Cola flavor and EWW!!! Now Clif's other shot flavors aren't too bad I prefer chocolate with the mocha as a close 2nd ;) We did the HALF and had our own Gel (used Powergel for that race) but I stupidly accepted the cola shot and thoguht they were trying to kill me!

As a joke I bought one for our friend Cathy who is doing it for the 1st time in January. Actually the joke was on her son. He has a habit of finding her stashed food and had zeroed in on a chocolate cliff shot we had given Cathy to try out. He wanted to eat it apparently the teenage stomach had already gone thru the rest of the snacks that day ;) So as a joke I bought a Cola and told her to give it to him to eat. I think he had less than a true teaspoon amount and was grossed out, if I recall correctly BEVERLY tastes better according to his reaction :lmao:

Bring your own goo. But the bananas are excellent tasting. :teeth:

Hope your hubby's injury heals quickly and well :)

Kevin! You guys get chocolate! Real chocolate? I'm obviously in the wrong race ;)

BTW, it might be late but I'm not making the connection... what's the AF Marathon in Sept?

Several aid stations have GU as well. I cannot remember which mile points, but I did take 3 gulps of GU during this year's full marathon. I tried a different flavor each time, but no matter the flavor, I found it vile. Tear off the end, bite onto the packet, pull the packet away and squeeze the GU into the mouth.

And then the most important part, after swallowing the GU wash the taste out with water.

It did help, however. A lot.

Yes, they have Hershey's kisses in the Disney Studios. At that point the mere thought of chocolate made me feel ill.

I hear you!

Not to mention that I did not have the coordination to unwrap at that point. Seems like many did, though. The pavement was covered by foil. Still wondering how you clean up trampled tin foil. :confused3

d-chick:

A. Not my avatar, of course I understand. ALthough, I did make sure you were from MI before I said anything.

B. There's no one like Stevie, and never will be. :( Nik's darn close on my list, though.

Here's the link to the current traing thread. You don't have to be training for anything, that why it's techinically called teh running/walking club thread. Just a bunch of us to support/encourage each other to keep moving.

Oh man, I second this.

When you are 23 miles into a 26.2 mile race the very thought of milk chocolate.... ugh.

Champange- yes. Water- yes. Non-chocolate candy- yes. Hershey's kisses- no. No way.

Hey, guys, I really appreciate this information, as well. I barely remember what the set up was on the 1/2 because I brought my own powerade and honey packets and power bars. I know I will be doing the same for the full but it is good to at least know what to expect in case I think I need something.

BTW -- I also cannot stand gu, but I think it "saved" DH when he hit the wall during the Delaware marathon. Of course, he couldn't even function to open the packet at that point (and he didnt' have gloves as an excuse, either), but our friend opened it and practically guided it to his mouth.

I have found that cliff blocks are very very effective for me, as are sport beans. I may force myself to get accustomed to gu and will try the chocolate flavor in the hopes of getting it down. Maybe I will try it for the DL 1/2.

Cam - Oh, I don't know about the chocolate. It coated my mouth for what seemed liek an eternity on my 16-miler. Blech! It tastes liek dark chocolate, which I normally like, but not while running. That may have been what inspired my thoguths that taking Gu was like training to compete with your cat in a furball contest. Then again, I don't mind the othe rflavors, so I should not scare you away. I would not buy more than 1, though. I personally like Tri Berry and Orange Blast best. The flavors seem a bit lighter to me. If oyu have something that works, you may not need Gu. I am just not capable of breathing and chewing at the same time. ;)

Thanks, Carrie! I also love dark chocolate and would hate to have my taste for it ruined forever to be thought of as competing with a cat in a furball contest! :rotfl2: So, I will definitely try another flavor instead. I think Howard uses the berry one so there may be some of those in our running basket. Maybe I'll try it tomorrow. Thanks for the heads-up from one dark chocolate lover to another!

Carrie and Cam, since I switched to mixing the GU packet in water, it's much better. I have a small GU flask..maybe 4-5 ounces? No more foil packets to mess with. I'm looking now online at some attachable flasks to add to my belt for DL. I'm going to have to try and see if I can eat while running this Saturday, though, as I don't have any GU. I do have a source for the honey packets and will pick up a couple of those to try. They also carry energy bars, so may have to try one. Will let you know how it goes! Anne

Anne -- I never would have thought to mix the gu with water. That may be a good plan for me - I can't even tolerate full strength powerade, so the gu might be hard to swallow (excuse the pun! ;) ). Those flasks look so professional, don't they? Just what I need -- more running paraphernalia! :teeth:

I had Vanilla powergel on the Half and I'm not thrilled with it but kinda chaulk it up like Diet pop. Kinda that diet-y taste that you just deal with.

Try different flavors and different Goos. Clif, GU, or powergel.

I was ok and could suffer with raspberry from powergel where as Susan who forgot her chocolate powergel at home and didn't realize it to pick some up at the Expo thought it was the culprit that made her stomach rebel a bit during the Half.

Definitely try NOW the different flavors and brands and as they have already recommended above follow with water.

Maherae???? Did I read that correctly that you take the Gu gel and mix it with water in your flask? Never thought about that. I'm ok with the chocolate Clif gel or powergel Vanilla straight up and actually by the time I take the Chocolate Clif if it's been in it's original foil package it's gotten a bit warm by heat and body and like it even better that or I'm really desparate by that time LOL But Susan might be interested in trying the watered down method. We have flasks from amphipod for their belts so can actually try that on our 10M LW this weekend and toss on the regular clif shot on the belt in case we don't like that. THANKS for that interesting option!!!!

Hey which BLOK is tasty? We have lemon/lime Sportbeans stocked in the pantry LOL If she runs out I have her covered, in fact I think I have all 3 of us in our team covered LMBO

Isnt' it funny how everyone has different tastes/needs?

Diane -- I like the red cliff blocks -- they are like very firm jello. But ordinarily I can't tolerate anything red.

And the lime sport beans give me indigestion but the orange ones don't.

Orange is still my flavor of choice for powerade, too, and that is what I carry with me for all my LWs.

I know I should broaden my horizons, though, so that I can use some of the race-provided products, but I am leery of taking chances on my stomache.

Cam - Have you tried all flavors of Powerade. Scott and I think all flavors but orange give us heartburn, unless watered down. I'm fine with Orange, though. :confused3

I found taking the offerings at the event worked for me. I always use half and wash down with water. Then there I am, I cannot throw away the half-filled packet so carry it the next way and take the other half in another couple of miles. I must try to learn to dispose of the half packets.

It's the Air Force Marathon, it's on 9/17 at Wright-Patterson Air Force Base, in Dayton, OH, where we're stationed.

Thanks for the info, my DH is really worried about hitting the wall and as gross as the gel is, he loves it.

Happy running! :bounce:

wtpclc: I love the avatar! It combines my 2 favorite things.
I'm slowly making peace with Stevie's retirement, I'm sure I'll shed a few tears though to see him at the Joe on game day, and not playing. :sad1:

Yup, I have low blood sugar issues, so I could not live without. How I love to hate it. ;)

My thougts exactly, which is how I got my tag.

BTW - I understand your name, but when I exictedly tried to tell my dh about it last night, it took about 10 minutes fo rme to try to pronouce it. :rotfl:

I have tried the Sports Beans and although I liked them alot at first. I have come to realize that they have a nasty habit of kind of "vurping" themselves up while I run. And they aren't anywhere near as good the second time!!

I have almost begun to really LIKE the Vanilla Bean Gu's. I usually mix them with water in my mouth. Take have the Gu and a mouthfull of water, swish, swallow, repeat. I am guessing it would be about the same as mixing them in your flask.
