Coming down to do goofy challenge next weekend. What is the official and "allowed" stance on earphones?

Their website says:

Headphones are discouraged due to audio messages that are placed throughout the course to ensure your safety.

So they don't say you CAN'T use them, just use them wisely. (ie- only one ear, or low volume). I keep reminding my husband, but he just rolls his eyes at me. (He likes to crank it...it's a miracle he isn't deaf yet!)
