OK ladies, just not sure if I should get nails does the day before we leave, or wait and hopefully get an early spa appointment. Any suggestions? When does the spa open ... Saturday or Sunday?

Such a silly question .....

Always have mine done at home. For two reasons: 1) don't want to waste time on vacation having it done; 2) it lots CHEAPER at home

AND you look prettier standing in line, waiting to get on the ship, in your flip flops or sandals. :) What else is there to do other than admire your toes?

We always go to the spa the day before a vacation. It's part of our tradition. Someone on the boards asked how to make the vacation last a little longer. We take 1/2 day off of work the day before we leave and start our vacation then. We have manicure and pedicure (yes, my husband and I both!!!!) appointments and sometimes even a massage or facial. The we go out for a nice dinner, have a few celebratory drinks, go home and get a good nights sleep (yeah, like that happens.....). I am always impressed with how well my manicure and pedicure polish stays on through the entire trip, even in the sand and water, when I have my nails professionally done. I am so glad that my husband enjoys it as well, there are so many ugly feet in the world....and you see them on a cruise.....that at least ours look decent. So, my vote is have them done prior to your trip and make it part of the fun!!!

DITTO!!!

I always get mine done the first day of the cruise. Nothing like starting with some pampering.

I do them before since it is so much cheaper- but if you have small kids you probably want to go with clear on the fingernails or at least buy the bottle of the color you use. I have found that when you are applying sunscreen to multiple people, there is something in sunscreen that eats nail polish. I looked pretty trashy less than 3 days after getting mine done because the sunscreen had eaten most of it off and I didn't think to bring polish remover.

We sail on Saturday and my DD and I are getting ours done tomorrow morning. We leave for the airport at 3 PM.:smooth: I like to have my nails look good right from the begining of my vacation. :sunny:

I too get mine done at home. First of all it is cheaper for me to have it done at home. Second, I like the way my Nailtician (if there is such a word);) does my nails. Also, my DD will want to eget her mani/pedi also. I don't want to waste any unneccesary time on the cruise & for me a mani/pedi onboard would take away from something else I could do! Kathy :wave2:

I generally go before the cruise for the same reasons as posted above.

Last cruise, however, my manicurist got sick the day of my appointment (yikes!). I went straight to the spa upon boarding and booked my fingers and toes for treatment during the sailaway (FYI-book manicures and pedicures at the spa's front desk, not the table they have set up for other spa reservations!) It was nice to sit in my pedicure chair and watch the Magic pull away from port...very relaxing...the salon was empty but for me...a great kick off to a great trip!:p

At Home! Last summer I broke a nail and made an appointment to have a manicure on the ship. The nail tech was VERY nice and the spa IS wonderful. However I noticed the next day that my polish was very sticky and looked funny. I went back to the spa and they fixed them---she said that their polish will get sticky and start to look bad if it is in contact with waterproof sunscreen. Hello--on a ship your fingers will probably come in contact with waterproof sunscreen! I have never had this problem with OPI polish-----so if you do decide to get your nails done at the ship spa you really may want to bring your own polish.

At home here too. It gives me a little break from stressing and packing. And it gives me some time to myself before spending a whole week with the family LOL. Plus it's cheaper. The manicure costs about $50 and pedicaure $65 on the ship. I did have a pedicure on the last cruise and it was nice but honestly not as good as the one I get at home.

Well, my hubby's feet will probably be one of the "ugly feet" you'd see on the cruise! I wish I could convince him to get a mani/pedi as well! This will be our first cruise (Sept), but I'm getting my nails/feet done the day before we leave. My husband gave me a gift card for a local spa that I've been "saving" so I can use it just before we go on vacation. I'll probably get a massage or facial too.

For you ladies that have trouble keeping your nail polish on:
A friend of mine is a beautician, but she's a stay-at-home mom and has a list of customers that she takes care of in her "spare time". Anyway, she recommended a couple of products by Orly. The first is called "Bonder". It is a rubberized base coat that helps minimize the staining to the nail (a must if you use alot of reds). The second is the "Glosser" and this is a high shine top coat. I use both products whenever I do my own feet & my polish lasts FOREVER! I'm thinking about taking them with me to the spa & asking them to use these instead of their base/top coat or just applying the top coat the minute I get home! I got them at a local beauty supply store. Hope this helps, although I've never seen the effects of that sunscreen may have on it. Guess I'll have to "test" this before we cruise!:wave2:

For the last three years, my hubby and I have gotten a mani/pedi done the morning we leave for FL (we drive down). After we get done, we walk over to Publix for lunch (yummy White Mtn bread sandwich and chips) and then hit the road. It's a really nice treat before we start out.

Hubby was pretty reluctant the first time...but I talked him into
just the pedicure ...and once we got there, I told him that for just a little bit more, they'd do his hands too (I didn't call it a manicure :) just said they trim up his nails). He said okay...and afterwards he was like "Man that's pretty relaxing, now I understand why you like it so much." The next year it was hubby who said, "Don't forget we need to go get our hands and feet done"...I guess as long as you don't call it a "manicure" he's okay with it. :)

I vote for before. It is costly to get it done on the ship, and if you have someone you see regularly, they know your hands and feet. I would bring polish on board for touch up. I have never had a problem with mine chipping ot flaking off when I had acrylics, but now I just have my natural nails and I need to redo every 3 days or so, base coat and top coat included. My sister had a ped on board the Wonder, it cost her over 100 dollars between the service, the lotion purchase and tip. But she said it was a good one.

I keep trying to talk DH into both, but he thinks it's only for girls.

Before the cruise - the manicure and pedicure cost so much more expensive on ship, and I'd much rather use that money for some other decadent spa treatment that I don't normally get at home!

Someone mentioned waterproof sunscreen ruining nail polish .... I've been experiencing the same thing but I'm convinced it in the top coat. I ruined a mani in Mexico, had another while there (sort of scary experience), and that one was OK. Same OPI polish ...
