Mandatory flu shot. NJ

They've changed the law. Doesn't bother me, because my kids get a flu shot every year - a friend of mine lost her 8 month old baby because of the flu.

Nothing was sent home here about it..
ETA: Ok I see it is just for preschool.
I think it's a litttle over the top especially because often my son was able to get a flu shot during his yearly check up in September, but by the time my daughter went for her check up in October they had run out of them. What to do then?
That said, if you can opt out of all the really important(IMO) ones, I am sure you can opt out of this one as well.
It's mandatory..unless you say no and they they can't do anything about it.

My children's elementary school sent home a letter saying they were giving flu shots to all the kids, just sign this permission form. My children's physician does NOT feel that my children need to get this shot, I trust a PHYSICIAN who KNOWS MY CHILDREN to make such a decision with me, not the school, not the government. So I did NOT return the permission slips and did send a note to the school notifying them that all innoculation decisions for my children will be made between my husband, myself and my children's dr.

Ticktock, shots are mandated for private and public preschool. The state health dept looks at all records from all schools, public and private. I pay for my child's private education and they look at her health records, too, to make sure she is compliant.

Sorry, didn't know it was mandated for all schools. That is crazy. There should should be an opt out. I can see where it would be a benefit to the public health but it shouldn't be forced. The flu is dangerous but it's not like small pox. I personally think you should have to have your children vaccinated for small pox, polio etc or keep them home. Vaccines only work if most of the population is vaccinated.

I sometimes get my DS the flu shot. I refuse to get him the nasal spray because it is a live vaccine, even though it is weakened I won't risk that. The shot is dead. Unless you are allergic to one of the the vaccine components it can't hurt you. That would be like your great Aunt Edna's mink stole coming to life and attacking you. :rotfl:

I have a reaction to the flu shot, also this year's shot did not protect against the strain that was around here anyway, so I am not sure on what grounds they can decide it is a good idea to mandate. My children have heart murmurs, so are not supposed to have it because of that.

Well since I don't think the government should be providing free daycare, Uhm I mean pre-k:rolleyes: I don't have a problem with it. Your kid doesn't need to go to government funded pre-k. Send them somewhere else or stay home with them yourself.

This reminds me of that thread about fat people having to pay extra for their insurance. Insurance is NOT an inalienable right (neither is tax payer funded daycare):headache: . So if you have to pay more because you COST more, tough. That's not a violation of your rights. It's your CHOICE to be fat and it's the OPs choice to send her kid to government daycare. If you want the benefits of these societal perks you have to follow the rules.

Personally being a Classical Libertarian (as opposed to a civil Libertarian) I pay my own way. That way I can do what I please. I just worry that the government will take away my right to pay my own way, to not send my kids to their brainwashing schools, to listen to what I want to on the radio etc:rolleyes1. THAT will be losing the freedom of choice. You can't have your cake and eat it too. Sorry.

Um this is a private school. not a publically funded one. And on the eye rolling- my son really enjoys going to this school. They have fun do science experiments and he gets to socialize with children his own age. He goes 3 days a week for all of 3 hours. But has fun so yes I'll pay for him to go.

Just curious as to why this is.
My son has/had a heart murmur and he always got a flu shot.
I hadn't heard that he was not supposed to get the flu shot because of it, neither his ped nor his cardiologist ever mentioned avoiding it.
He had a hole in his heart along with the murmur, and still got the shot even back before his hole was repaired.
Thanks!

This is mandated for preschoolers and daycare - so basically children under 6. ALL -- private and public.

And it will grow from there. I was born, raised, and lived most of my life just blocks from New Jersey. They have some messed up laws. ::yes::

I think it is ridiculous. I do not give my kids the flu shot and I doubt I ever will. That is my choice. If kids can go to school completely unvaccinated then there is no reason why I cannot chose what vaccines I want to give my children.

Yes, it is the law in NJ and a lot of NJ citizens are unhappy with this law. And if enough people speak out against the law it will be changed.

Either get the shot or don't send your kid to daycare....it is the law in NJ.

I am just pointing out that we are not talking about having to get the shot to send your child to K-12. It is for pre-schools and daycare. You certainly at this point can choose not to get your child the flu vaccine.

I was told by my ped that it had to do with the carrying agent being derived from raw egg?

That is interesting because my DNe had Kawasaki's Disease some years back which does threaten the heart and blood vessels. After he recovered, starting that year and every year since his whole family has been counseled to get flu shots due to his weakened heart condition.

Just curious as to why this is.

This sounds like the same information that was given to my DNe's family (DB, DSIL, and DNi.) This family has traveled hundreds of miles for DNe to get what they considered top notch cardiac care, and they are still counseled to get a flu shot every year.
