Making reservations ?

My friend and I want to go to Super Soap Weekend next November. I want to make hotel reservations as soon as possible but we don't know the exact date for SSW. I'm thinking it will be the first weekend in November but they probably won't announce it until spring. My question is, how easy/hard is it to switch reservations if we figured wrong? Also, I was planning on making my reservations online. Has anyone had any problems doing it that way?

I know a lot of people will frown on this, but you could always make the reservation for longer than you plan to be there in order to cover all the dates you need. For example, if you know it iwll be one of the 1st 2 weekends in November, book a 2 week stay, then when the dates come out you can adjust your reservation to the time period you'll be there. For our October trip, we thought we'd be there the 9-16, but hoped we could stay longer so we reserved our rooms for the 9-20. Well, as it turned out, we couldn't get there till the 15, so thank gosh we booked it the way we did since it was very crowded when we were there and trying to get rooms till the 20th would have been harder. If you book a room only reservation, you only need to put a deposit down for 1 night of your stay, so paying for it shouldn't be an issue since you'd have to put that amount down either way.
