Making me nuts about motion sickness

I get "nauseous" on all of the simulator type rides, in fact there is even one part of Soarin' I have to close my eyes - the nighttime scene near the end. I have to close my eyes and DD tells me to open when it's over. IMAX movies do it to me too!

I also get sick on anything that goes in circle - Magic Carpets, Dumbo, Tea Cups :tilt: and even the carousel! I've done them in the past, but now DD is old enough to get on herself.

I am just plain scared of roller coasters....

The siggy above even makes me a little "off" looking at it blink and move!!!

I chalk it up to the fact that we never went to amusement parks with rides when I was a kid...we lived 30 min from Dorney Park (not a huge park... but roller coaster, etc) all my life and never set foot in the place. My folks just weren't into them. I can ride all the way to CA and back, go across the Atlantic in a boat, or fly from here to anywhere and never get motion sick... but put me on a carousel horse and it's all OVER!

I, too, have benign positional vertigo. It is very different from motion sickness. With vertigo, you don't just feel nauseated, you actually have the sensation that the whole world is spinning, and THEN you get nauseated. BPV can happen at any time. Not just while you are "in motion" for example, I used to live in fear of sneezing. Just the act of quickly nodding my head set off vertigo. Also, bending down to pick something up was a trigger. Vertigo is caused by problems with the inner ear. Sometimes it has to do with infection, sometimes just congestion. It also effects your balance. I have managed to curb my BPV with religiously taking allery meds (Zyrtec) this helps with inner ear congestion. I also have a prescription for meclizine from my doctor to take in times of need. Please remember it takes oral medications usually and hour or so to work, so to get the best advantage it is better to take them prior to any situations in which you may experience vertigo. This seems to allow me to go on all rides. BTW prescription meclizine does not make me sleepy, but dramamine does!

I am unfortunately someone who gets motion sickness pretty easily. :sad2:
Rock N Roller coaster made me feel a bit dizzy, but not sick to my stomach. That was a few years ago. Since that trip I have decided not to take chances. I now take Bonine, just in case. We did Soarin twice this last trip. No problems :) LOVE It! EE was a different story :sad2: It made me feel dizzy and gave me a sour stomach for a couple hours. That was even with the Bonine. I don't think I feel the need to try that one again ;)
Maybe you could save some of these attractions to do last thing, in case they do make you feel ill. That way you aren't ruining a complete day.
You do NOT have severe motion sickness if you did ANY coaster!!! I get sick in the car, boats, planes, swings, ect...I take dramamine just to stand transportation (the old kind, the less drowsy one does NOT work for me!) To the OP, if your kids do SM okay I would try most anything with them. You CAN take dramamine after the fact if they get sick, but I doubt they will. Go and enjoy!!

I hate to say it but everyone experiences different levels of motion sickness. Things that may make someone prone to motion sickness dizzy may not make the next person dizzy you know? Unfortunately I think you may either have to avoid rides that make you nervous or just take the leap and give them a try.

I LOVE RNRC and have never been dizzy from it. I did get a little dizzy from MS and very slightly from Soarin - but mainly cuz I really lost myself on this ride it was so incredible! After Soarin, the feeling I had I could equate with after I get off an elevator.

I would say if you REALLY want to ride a ride that you're hesitant to try so it doesn't "wreck" your day, maybe save it till the end of the day at that park. Then if you feel a little dizzy you can go back to your hotel and lay down without it interfering with the rest of your day. :sunny:

Good luck!!
Very true, good advice! If you and your kids have never gotten sick I would worry very little. I should be so lucky! (Dd 15 rides everything, the others are pretty chicken!)

Thanks for posting this information. Very helpful :) Do you ever feel dizzy when you are just sitting? I have been having that lately too. Geez. Maybe that is just cause I am getting old ;)

I'm another person who suffers from BPV. I take meclizine when needed. Sometimes just rolling over in bed is a trigger for me.

To the person who asked earlier, I was diagnosed by a neurologist after a battery of tests.

The worst ride for me was Star Tours. I was really sick after that ride. I even have to close my eyes for part of Mickey's Philharmagic. It was the same thing on Soarin'. EE bothered me some but I was fine after I had some lunch.
