Making me nuts about motion sickness

Okay posters I'm getting a little obsessed about the subject of motion sickness on certain rides, now people are even asking about Soarin! I went with my girls last year ages 4 and 7 at the time. We didn't go to Epcot. We are going again this year and I'm torn between enjoying every experience but giving up precious recovery time to a queasy stomach. Here's my question will Expedition Everest if experienced early in am after a very light dry breakfast make you nauseous? We just came back from Hershey Park and my 8 year old went on most of the roller coasters with no problems. What about the tamer version of Mission Space? Don't want to feel ill in the World's later that day. Finally what about Aerosmith Rock n Roller Coaster. Last year my oldest went on Space Mountain and loved it. Is the Rock N Roller Coaster a different kind of animal? Any strategies or experiences would be most welcome.

The Rockin Roller Coaster is a great ride, DH and I have never had a problem with it. It is fast, and does launch you at the beginning, but as far as motion sickness I wouldn't be concerned. One of my friends actually hates roller coasters, but loves this one and rides everytime he goes. Give it a shot, I think you'll have a blast! :cool1:

BTW, Dh and I rode Mission Space and we both hated it. Very cramped, uncomfortable, and everyone in our little "ship" was anxious to get out. I will never ride that again. Have never done the tamer version, but I don't think it would really help. Def. one ride to avoid if you are claustrophobic or get motion sickness at all!

I get motion sick....dizzy headachey queasy etc. I used to get nervous going on certain rides. I love them, but don't like the feeling when I get off and it takes me a while to recover therefore burning precious ride time. Certain rides used to really ruin my day and lots of times, I would not go on them.

For the past 4 years, I have been using Dramamine LESS Drowsy formula. One dose works for 24 hours. How I take it is the key.....I take 2 pills (you can take 1) before going to bed starting on the night before we leave. If it does make you sleepy, you are sleeping anyway. You wake up in the AM, feeling great and not tired. I go on RnR, ToT back to back and don't feel a thing but FUN! No more dizziness, queasiness or headaches. I can go on anything I want and it works all day. Just take a dose before going to bed and you will be fine!

I have tried Bonine, but did not work as well as Less Drowsy Dramamine. Bonine made me very tired. I would never use the patch as it causes side effects like blurriness among others. Ginger tablets were really gross as I tasted "ginger" all day. Ginger tablets may settle your stomach, but do not prevent dizziness. LD Dramamine is safe, effective, affordable and available everywhere.

I don;t like heights, so Soarin, did not make me dizzy, I just did not like it. I have found different rides and their motions affect people differently. The motion of RnR may be of but Tot may make you feel wierd...

The main ingredient in both Bonine and Less Drowsy Dramamine is Meclizine. I buy Meclizine from the pharmacist...got a bottle of 100 at Sam's Club for $5.91 in the spring. Bonine costs ~ $3.00 for 8 chewable tablets!

I did not feel motion sickness on any rides I rode (I didn't do Mission Space).. but, I think I did most of the rest, Rock n roller Coaster, Soarin, Expidition Everest, ect.

I usually get motion sickness on rollar coasters too, not at Disney though. It must be the Disney Magic.

bear in mind, this is just my personal experience, but i became DEATHLY ill on mission:space last year and was miserable the rest of the morning. i'm not talking about getting a little queasy-i was soaked through with sweat and it was dripping off me, the world was spinning, and i honestly thought i was going to throw up-one of the girls in the mission:space gift shop wanted to call emergency services. motion sickness had never been a problem for me until my gastric bypass surgery 2 years ago, but now i get dizzy if i even turn my head too quick, so if you're prone to motion sickness, i would definitely buy some bonine/dramamine (i'm going to wdw in 17 days and i certainly plan to!).

I suffer from positional vertigo....which means i get very dizzy with certain head positions. Sometimes i cannot look up or down without being dizzy. I love rollercoasters but am fearful of upsetting my vertigo if we go upside down. Would the dramamine help with that?? Does anyone else suffer from vertigo but still ride with no ill affects??
Thanks
Karen

There is definately a difference with the Less Drowsy formula. I know that Bonine and Dramamine are made from Meclizine, but I like the fact that the LD formula works and does not make me sleepy. Bonine and regular dramamine do. Bonine is also chewable only and it is disgusting.

I truly feel your pain about the motion sickness. I get extremely queasy on any type of motion simulator and the rest of my day is usually ruined. When I went a month ago I did take a (less drowsy) Dramamine the morning I went to Epcot because I wanted to ride Mission Space - the tame version obviously - and Soarin'. It turned out that I didn't need to because when I went on later in the week without taking it, I was fine. Mission Space reminded me of a video game and Soarin' reminded me of a movie because it didn't have any of the jerky movements usually associated with simulators.

I also had to take one before I went on Star Tours because the last time I went, I got really sick. As for Tower of Terror and the Rockin' Roller Coaster - I can't help you out because those types of rides don't bother me that much. Expedition Everest did bother me a lot and I wish I had taken a Dramamine before I went on.

Hope that helps!!

I am unfortunately someone who gets motion sickness pretty easily. :sad2:
Rock N Roller coaster made me feel a bit dizzy, but not sick to my stomach. That was a few years ago. Since that trip I have decided not to take chances. I now take Bonine, just in case. We did Soarin twice this last trip. No problems :) LOVE It! EE was a different story :sad2: It made me feel dizzy and gave me a sour stomach for a couple hours. That was even with the Bonine. I don't think I feel the need to try that one again ;)
Maybe you could save some of these attractions to do last thing, in case they do make you feel ill. That way you aren't ruining a complete day.

This may sound silly...but did you actually get diagnosed with vertigo or how does that work? I just chalk mine up to getting motion sickness now and then in certain situations. Or is that the same thing? :rotfl:
A roller coaster like the Batman does me in. EE also did. Up and down roller coaster usually don't. I can't read in a car either.

If your kids ride the coasters at Hershey with no problem, they'll be fine with anything in WDW. Really, the rides at disney are pretty tame compared to those (esp the storm runner).

Hi Plutosfriend! I feel so bad for you, it really stinks to have motion sickness. I have found the older I get the more prone I am to it, so I don't take any chances as I LOVE rides. I just need to ask you, are you taking your medication enough in advance? It does need time to work. I also tried Bonine and found it really hard to take, the chewable tablet made me nauseaous and even though it has the same active ingredient as Dramamine does, it really did not work for me. The 24 hour kind works best for me, I take a dose every night at 10 and I am good all day, I also take the max dose of 2 tabs. My Dh and I went on a cruise and before we went I tried all different motion sickness remedies to find the one that works best for me. Maybe you should try something different as what may work for 1 does not work for another. Hope you find something to make you feel better :sunny:

I hate to say it but everyone experiences different levels of motion sickness. Things that may make someone prone to motion sickness dizzy may not make the next person dizzy you know? Unfortunately I think you may either have to avoid rides that make you nervous or just take the leap and give them a try.

I LOVE RNRC and have never been dizzy from it. I did get a little dizzy from MS and very slightly from Soarin - but mainly cuz I really lost myself on this ride it was so incredible! After Soarin, the feeling I had I could equate with after I get off an elevator.

I would say if you REALLY want to ride a ride that you're hesitant to try so it doesn't "wreck" your day, maybe save it till the end of the day at that park. Then if you feel a little dizzy you can go back to your hotel and lay down without it interfering with the rest of your day. :sunny:

Good luck!!

I don't know why Less Drowsy Dramamine doesn't make you sleepy and Bonine does, but they have the same active ingredient - Meclizine.
Less Drowsy Dramamine: http://www.pfizerch.com/product.aspx?id=259
Bonine: http://www.drugs.com/pdr/bonine_chewable_tablets.html

Regular Dramamine has Dimenhydrinate: http://www.pfizerch.com/product.aspx?id=257

Another vote here for Less Drowsy Dramamine. I'm not prone to motion sickness but I did take a dose of it before Mission: Space just so I wouldn't have to worry about it. My husband had about an hour of discomfort the first time he rode M:S, none the second time (a year or so later), and neither of us bothered with Dramamine and had no problems on the Green Card M:S.

Also, my son takes Dramamine for car trips and has no problems.

Long way of getting around to saying the Low Drowsy really does work and doesn't make you tired or feel whacked-out. Why worry when there's an easy solution?

:confused3 I don't know why either. Maybe there is something in the LD dramamine to conteract the active ingredient or Maybe it's THE WAY I take it. I take 2 pills at bedtime, so if it does make me drowsy, I am sleeping it off. When I wake up I do not feel drowsy all day and since it works for 24 hours I feel great ...no motion sickness.

:rotfl2: It also makes a great hangover "tonic" :rotfl2: So if you drink too much the night before, you will still be good to go on any and all rides the next day.

Thanks! I appreciate that :sunny: Nothing like being nauseous, especially on vacation :sad2: I like your tip about taking it before bedtime. I may have to give that a whirl :) I am going to try that Dramamine next time. What have I got to lose? Well besides my cookies ;)
