Hello! I’m new to the DVC process so just trying to get some information. When looking at Resales, can you offer to buy less points then what is being sold. For example is someone is selling 250 points, but I only want 150, can you make an offer on the 150??

Thanks for your help!!

When originally sold by Disney, the contract was for XX amount of points, at a certain resort for a certain UY. Those points will stay as is until bought back by Disney. Only Disney can break up a contract

Nope. That’s be like seeing a 5 bedroom house and offering to buy three of the bedrooms. It doesn’t work that way.

Just this statement causes concern that you do not fully understand the DVC system. Please do not take offence to this, but take it as a concern that there needs to be more studying of the DVC system. Please do a lot of reading on these boards before going ahead with this large financial commitment. Many people will read and research the DVC system and the variables that go into the purchase for many months and sometimes years before jumping in to make a purchase. There is researching what resort, how many points you need, what UY you need for your travel habits, what size room will fit your family, the 11 month and 7 month booking windows, yearly maintenance fees ..... and on and on.

https://www.disboards.com/threads/the-dvc-resource-center-updated-january-2018.3655476/ Here is a good starting point. Read through each section and then ask your questions on this forum. Even once you buy you will still have questions, we all do that that is why this community is so essential during the buying process as well as while you own your DVC.

What part of "Hello! I’m new to the DVC process so just trying to get some information" did you miss?

The part where you start a thread about making an offer is going to be a much louder alarm bell than any disclaimer about being “new to this.”

I guess some of us have to wonder how much you should be concerned about positioning an offer when you’re not even clear on what you’re buying. @kniquy ’s concern is a legitimate one. A big cart before the horse.

Does it look like I'm the OP?
My response was framed around the misunderstanding that someone had posed a question, got a thoughtful response, and in turn gave a snarky retort.

I should’ve read more carefully and realized that the snarky came from someone else. My apologies to the OP.

That's better! :rotfl2:

Why did you bother posting this? The OP was looking for more information, and kniquy just tried to point them in the right direction, without being condescending. Your comment made theirs look much more abrasive than it was intended to be. The OP should feel free to ask any questions they want, but also should hope to be pointed in the right direction, not to have every step laid out specifically for her.

Why is there an immediate assumption on these boards that someone is lacking knowledge on DVC? A reasonable question in post #1 was followed by a reasonable answer in post #2.

For my part, I didn't do any favors either and I do apologize for the snark.

Here is another good thread on what people are actually paying for their dvc contract. Many listing companies will list their selling price much higher than it is actually worth. There is also looking at the points status -- so if you only want a 150 point contract - which is likely a good starting point you can look at the price people paid for similar sized contracts. There is also the points status -- comparing what the contract has available for points for 2017/2018/2019 -- this can make a huge variable when buying because often people will "strip" their contract of points (meaning you might not have any points to use until 2020) and then selling it at a competitive price compared to contracts that have current points to use.

What alarmed me was the title of the thread "making an offer". It would be a scary situation to be thinking about making an offer when you don't have a handle on the types of contracts that are for sale. My response was to provide some initial direction on what to read to help with getting a better understanding the ins and outs of DVC.

As others have stated, contracts are for the points listed. You can offer less per point and the seller may accept, counter or ignore.
As was suggested, look at the sticky area for tons of information about DVC, what it is, isn't, how it works. Before we purchased our first contract, I spent a lot of time reading through all of that infomration and it helped a bunch. Once you've read through the information, don't be afraid to ask questions about parts that didn't make sense.
DVC makes sense for many, but not everyone and its good to know if its a fit for you before you leap and buy something.
FWIW, we love both of our contracts and it sworked very well for us.
