Odd question...I have a friend who wants me to help her with her wedding make-up, which is sweet of her, however, I'm not a make-up pro!! ;)

I suggested going to a make-up counter at Macy's to get a "make over." But I don't know what this entails. Is there a fee? Is she required to purchase anything? (I'd certainly encourage her to purchase the colors they used, at least on her eyes!)

Anyone know about getting a little makeover at the counters??

It would probaly save her money and time to have her makeup professionally done the day of the wedding. I went to the salon to have my hair done day of and also splurged for the professional to do makeup. It was well worth it. I think I did endup buying the lipstick they used since I would need to apply that through out the day. The rest of the makeup lasted all day. It was well worth it.

I agree - professional makeup on the day of would be the best route - but she's having a morning wedding in a rural area, so that's out (she's lucky to be getting her HAIR done - she found someone who will do it at 6:30 am!!!).

This is a general summary, it may vary store to store.

Usually there is no fee but they really do expect you to buy some of the products. so go with a line that you like.
Also you can ask if the ladies are make up artist or simply sales girls filling in behind the counter space.
Some lines will have "visits" from professional artist. Lancome does this all the time so ask if a makeup professional is in the area.

Lastly, Go with her. You will know your girlfriend and how she likes to look better than the professional and you will give her an honest opinion.

The first girl who I tried made my makeup to 'bright" or clowny. She kept telling me I was just unused to wearing the brighter shades and I would get use to it. My maid of honor had no problem describing in vivid details what she thought I looked like. :lmao: (ample use of hte word pole dancer)

We did this about 1 month prior to the wedding and actually like the girl so much we asked her to come to my house and do the wedding party. well worth the money, everyone loved their look.

this was a long time ago, but when I got married some of the counters at Macy's let you book appts for a make-over

OP, you say your friend is having her hair done the morning of her wedding...could the stylist maybe bring along a co-worker to do your friend's makeup? surely she knows another stylist who'd like to make some extra money, and it would save your friend a lot of time. they could meet in advance of the wedding and do a practice makeover to pick out colors (the bride could use her own makeup, which would make her more comfortable and avoid any allergic reactions). the bridesmaids may also want to pay for a hairdo or makeup (or perhaps the bride would pay for them?). BIG win-win for the stylists!

A former co-worker of mine used to work at the Chanel counter at Macy's as a part time weekend job. I remember her saying sometimes that women would make appointments for wedding make-up, but I don't know if Chanel charged for that or not.

When I got married the spa/salon I went to had a make-up person, and I paid to have them do my make-up. I also got to take small sample sizes of that make-up with me for any touch-ups I might need later in the day.

On the day of my wedding earlier this year, I had an artist come to the hotel to do my makeup. Most of my bridal party opted to go to their favorite makeup counters at a local Dept store to get theirs done using the products they are used to.

My sister and niece used M.A.C., they looked great btw. Although there technically wasn't a "charge" for the application, they were required to purchase $55.00 in products, whatever products they chose, not exactly what was used. My sister chose to purchase the lipstick (so that it was a new and not tester that was used on her and my niece) and some other things to keep up her look.

What's great about using the counters like this is that you aren't just paying for a service...you get to purchase products that you probably would want anyway...and the application is just "included".

Thanks for your replies - I WISH we had a MAC counter (or better yet, store!). I use MAC products exclusively when it comes to my eyes - LOVE IT. I even drive four hours to get to my nearest MAC store when I'm really in need!

This bride is a difficult bride. She calls HERSELF "bridezilla." She is intent on me doing her makeup - I was just hoping someone at a makeup counter could give us some direction. However, I suggested the idea to the bride this morning - thinking it would make a nice "girly day" this weekend to go get her "done up." But she informed me she's already purchased colors that she wants (from Target...ELF brand? I haven't used them - hoping they're good!!) and that she wants to do makeup trials at home. Okay!

Hopefully, I can work some magic! :wizard:

Thanks for all your help!

Good Luck to you! I wouldn't have a clue how to put eye makeup on someone else even though I do a fairly good job on my own face. How even professionals do someone else eyeliner boggles my mind! So definitely do some practice before-hand.

ELF brand is dollar makeup--$1-2 per item.
