Make a Wish (and other organizations!) - Wish Trippers...UNITE!! Volume 2!

Not open for further replies.
My hope is that you guys will arrive any day but Friday. When you arrive on Friday you leave on Thursday and miss the Christmas party on Thurs night.

Good point! Are there any other "evenings" at GKTW, or are all the other activities planned for mornings?

One thought...If you are set and really, really want to eat at a certain restaurant...I would go ahead and make some reservations. Some require pre-payment...but most don't. You could make a few reservations at that particular place for different dates around the time you want to go...then you could cancel the dates that you don't end up using.

Is there a way to reserve online, or do you have to call the Dining line? I was a little surprised to realize that we are already past our 180 days, if we're going in April! I hadn't decided for sure which meals we wanted to try for, but maybe it will have to be based on what's available.

I don't get much chance to post here, but do pop in to read.
Just got back from WDW on 10/30, so I'm still catching up.
And any future Wish Trippers threads will be on the disABILITIES Community Board. ;)
You are welcome to make a new 'home' on either the disABILITIES Board or the disABILITIES Community Board.
Oohhhhh, sweet little guy. Bless his heart-I'm so sorry he couldn't get out the words. (My DS is non-verbal so it had to come from me.)
 I know he's having a dificult time so how about either drawing a picture or use coloring book pages of characters he likes or pull clip art pictures off of the internet and let him make a collage of all the things he'd like to see in Disney. That way he could just give them the picture and if he finds the words-wonderful, if not they will still be able to know what he wants to do because he will have shown them. I'm sure your family isn't the first that had a challenging time finding the words so don't dispair. My experience is that MAW & it's volunteers are wonderful and will work with you to get him where he wants to go.
I was going to suggest the same thing.
April...

I am on my phone...so I will be a little brief. I would lean toward mid and late April. Way after Easter week which is busy in Disney.

Weather... It can really vary in FL. Theoretically it should not be too rainy. No hurricanes. It can be warm. Even hot. But not as hot as summer.

I think it is a fine time to go! And may be warm enough to enjoy the beach!
I would agree.
We have been to WDW a number of times in April and it is usually nice. You do want to miss Easter week if at all possible, but other than that, it is fine.

The one thing about Florida weather is that it can be hot any time of year. I have been there in December when it was in the 80s when it is usually in the 70s and on our recent trip, the weather was unseasonably warm, at close to 90.

Good point! Are there any other "evenings" at GKTW, or are all the other activities planned for mornings?

There are evening plans. I think I have it linked in the 2nd post on this thread? I will have to check that.

These are subject to change any given week - especially holiday weeks - but usually it flows like this:

Sunday PM: Candyland Party on the AWESOME GKTW Playground (Accessible playground - Magical!) (this may be a don't miss if you have small children)
Mon AM: Disney Character greetings
Mon PM: Kids Night Out and Discovery Animal Cove Activities
Tues AM: Nickelodeon (sp?) Characters
Tues PM: Family Fun Night
Wed AM: Horseback Riding
Wed PM: Village Idol and Kids Night Out
Thurs AM: Disney Character greetings
Thurs PM: Christmas at GKTW - a DON'T miss if you are there - Meet Santa First (can be a long line)
Fri AM: Barney photos
Fri PM: Pirates and Princess Party
Sat AM: Horseback Riding
Sat PM: Mayor Clayton's Birthday Party

Also...for you guys that are going soon - let me know if these have changed. They get swapped around sometimes. But Thursday is almost always Christmas.

Is there a way to reserve online, or do you have to call the Dining line? I was a little surprised to realize that we are already past our 180 days, if we're going in April! I hadn't decided for sure which meals we wanted to try for, but maybe it will have to be based on what's available.

I would go ahead and pick your top three choice on dining. The really hard ones to get are Cinderella's Royal Table (CRT) the restaurant is in the castle - but it is also very pricey and the food is generally regarded as average?

An alternative to CRT would be Askershus, which has a princess meal in Epcot at the country of Norway. I have heard great things about this meal and is an alternative if eating IN the castle is not a must.

Another favorite is Chef Mickey's. It is a character breakfast with Mickey, Minnie and some other "big" ones. It is located in the Contemporary Resort. The monorail goes right through the building, so it is a pretty cool place to eat. It fills up pretty fast.

There is also 1900 Parke Fare at the Grand Floridian. Another character meal with Prince Charming, the Wicked Step Sisters and others. I am doing to be eating here in December and can't wait! They have also done some special things for wish families in the past.

And there are a BUNCH of other wonderful restaurants. Those are just off the top of my head that wish families may enjoy.

You CAN do your reservation online and I highly recommend it!

Please PM me if you guys are unable to find a ressie you need. I have some "helpers" that help get on the website multiple times a day and catch if there is a cancellation in hopes that a wish family could get it. So let me know if you are having issues. No promises, but it won't be from a lack of trying.

Some are self-explanatory and some I have read about in TR's. Can someone elaborate on a few of them for me, so that we can make the best plan for our kids' interests? (Pretty pleeeeasssse?) I highlighted the ones I'm unfamiliar with. :)

I've been trying to look at available dates online but it keeps stopping me and saying I need to enter the ages of the kids. I am already logged in and I don't see a place for the ages. I entered the number of adults and the number of kids but I don't see how to do ages.:confused3 This is getting stressful!:headache: I will breather easier when we have all the dates in place!

I went ahead and called the Res line and a very helpful employee got me further than I could get alone. :wizard:I started with the castle just to see what they had for the last week of April and they had one brkfst and one lunch, so I took the lunch. After that it got a little less helpful, but still very nice of course. She offered to check for other meals but was basically checking one day and one time. After booking lunch for Friday the 23rd she then checked the next meal for Sat the 24th and the next one for Sun the 25th. What I was hoping to do was compare and see what was available and then choose one, but now I have three. :lmao: I have Cinderella's Castle for lunch, 1900 Park Fare for dinner, and Akershus for lunch. I hope our travel dates will coordinate with at least one of these!

Hi everyone I just wanted to say that i have been in LA LA land and somehow forgot to scroll to the bottom of the wish trippers unite page so I have not been posting here and i have kicked myself hard a couple of times for it! THANK YOU MAROO for the heads up.

I feel a little silly having not posted here, but I do know several of you from trip reports that im subbed to. I came asking for prayers tonight for my friend.

Yesterday @ 2:16 She had a baby girl but she was born too early. Her mom has been in the hospital on bed rest for 3 weeks with Placental Abruption and it has been really hard to keep the baby inside. The goal was to try and get her to 28 weeks. She made it just there and BB girl wouldnt wait anymore. She was 2.6 pounds and 13 inches long. Baby and mom are fighting infection and they were told that the first 24-48 hours would be rocky and then last night were told she may not survive the night. God answered prayers and she is still fighting. Amy (mom) is getting better. She is a remarkable woman who I love dearly. She has 2 young sons and BB girl was born on her Daddy birthday! Again, she is truley an amzing girl who I admire and this family deserves this miracle! Please pray for her when you read this.

A lil birdie told me that there are plenty of pretty awesome people here that would help me with praying for them.

I also need a prayer for my oldest daughter who is dealing with a few medical issues also. I am afraid now for her and anxiously awaiting test result to find out what is happening to her. The doctors are puzzled. :scared1:

I havent gotten my PTR attached yet so here is the link and I will keep updateing her for those who would like to pray for and with me.

So glad and thankful for Maroo!

And thankful for my Dis Friends :grouphug:

Still have your friends/family in my thoughts hon..okay..now what's really bad is that I thought I had seen you post here or I would have mentioned it to you:confused3 So you're not the only one that has trouble keeping up!

Just wanted to say Thank you to all who gave me advice on DS Gavin's verbalizing his wish to our wish granters. Well they came out again tonight and we showed them his collage he made and although he still wouldnt talk to them he smiled and that's all they needed. So it looks like were going to Disneyworld!! We are all soo excited. None of us have ever been and we just cant believe it's finally going to happen. Wish granters said they are booked through January which is fine, Im thinking early March when DH has vacation time. Now I can start planning :) Let the fun begin!!

I couldn't find it if you did. Sorry!

Ok...I am going to try to take care of that today! :)

It would be nice to be able to do one that has the explanation of what each is generally like??

For Online Dining...You should be able to put in # of Adults...then # of kids. And right beside that there should be a blank for each child with a drop down box. You select the age from there.

It is possible that the system was not working correctly, though and not showing the ages. But I would definitely try again. :thumbsup2 Especially if those dates don't work out and you end up having to re-book them.

Ok...let's see.

First - Disclaimer. Many of these parties are run by volunteers. And the volunteers can change week to week or even day to day. So these descriptions will be general and may not even be right. But hopefully it will give you an idea.

Kids Night Out - Basically this is a service where you can leave your kids - they will be entertained - and the adults can have a little time to themselves. I don't know of a family yet that has used this service? :confused3 They do have specifics...the children can not be in diapers (or otherwise incontinent) and I don't think they would have the medical training to take care of complicated medical issues. I don't believe they are nurses or anything. This, coupled with the fact that most of the families just want to be together, makes this something that not as many families take advantage of.

Discovery Cove - They bring animals (or maybe just one animal) out to let the kids touch it. Honestly...I don't think I would skip anything to go to this. The only report I had of this was that the particular family was disappointed that there was only one animal for the kids to play with. I think they maybe envisioned dolphins or something? This probably varies based on what volunteers are available as well.

Family Fun Night - I believe this varies week to week. There are sometimes magicians, or comedians that come and entertain the kids and parents. Maybe a clown? Doing animal balloons and such. This is another one that I think a lot of families just don't make time to go do.

Village Idol - This is another thing that I have not really seen in our TR's on the boards. What I understand is that the kids are able to perform, like American Idol. Of course, everyone is a winner! I think they even get the kids to sing anything - Old MacDonald - whatever. Just to get the kids up there and performing. I am sure there are children and teenagers that eat this up! **Note: If you have a teenager that is a really good singer - have them try out for the Real American Idol show in Disney Hollywood Studios. This is a great experience for any budding musicians. Make sure they know you are on a wish trip and if it is the wish child - let them know that, too.

Pirate and Princess Party - I think this is one of the main parties they have each week. The kids are encouraged to dress up like a Pirate or Princess. They have a "ceremony" where each child (including siblings) are "coronated" (is that the right word??) as a Prince or a Princess (or maybe a Pirate?). But they go out of their way to make each child feel special.

I am going to link to a blog about a wish trip for this...check this out...This trip is from 2008. A beautiful princess named Keyan.

http://www.hoganclan7.blogspot.com/ She actually has DAY 6 detailed on October 24th, 2009! I didn't realize she had not written about the last day. TEAR JERKER! I will be posting more about this in another post...WOW.

http://hoganclan7.blogspot.com/2008_10_01_archive.html
This is her report from the day they went to the Pirate and Princess Party. She has 5 kids. Four of them are quadruplets and one has some major medical issues. Here is how she described the party.

**** Make sure you look at the pictures on her blog - they describe a lot of this! ****

Our girls had been planning for two weeks on going to the Princess and Pirate Party held at the resort. I had packed all of their fancy dresses, high heels for all four of them, we bought special hair spray for their princess 'dos, and sparkly make-up.

We grabbed a quick dinner and than the transformation began. I got every ones dress on, Paul was in charge of the high heels, and Mom did their hair and make-up. Our resident pirate took care of himself and put his pirate shirt on. When the girls were finally ready, Ariel, Snow White, Aurora, and Cinderella all clip-clopped down to the Avenue of Angels where the party was being held.

Abby lifted her dress up at the corners and took off. As we were walking, Sidney said, "I just feel so pretty!" Abagayle announced, "We have been waiting our whole lives to go to the ball!" We all agreed that we do indeed have a bunch of princesses on our hands!

Jamahl got to pick a bag of loot, make a treasure map, and play a few pirate games. The girls heard the music and just started dancing. There was a pirate DJ who led some of the dances and than announced that it was time for the pirates to choose a princess to dance with. Keyan latched onto her pirate and slow danced the entire song just looking up at her pirate. It was so precious. Sidney danced with Jamahl, and Abby and McKenzy danced with Miss Merry (go figure).

After the final dance it was time to corronate the princesses and pirates. The stage was set up like a castle, and each child's name was called as they walked thru the door to get their crown or eye patch and sword. It was so cute. There is nothing like a bunch of kids not sure what they are supposed to be doing to make a group of adults laugh.

I am unable to accurately describe the feel of magic in the air. The girls felt like true royalty. It was amazing. When all was said and done, I got them each to pose with Daddy for a picture and than tried to get some group shots.

The problem was with Keyan....you see, there was Disney Princess music still playing over the speakers, so that meant that she just had to dance and sing along. She was up on the stage by herself surrounded by volunteers who were taking the set down. She did not care, she stood with her feet planted shoulder width apart, arms out wide singing the final note. Her tired, breathy, quiet voice was just as cute as ever. I stopped to watch her and it was if the world stopped. Everything sort of blurred except for Keyan singing her heart out. I could almost see the pixie dust shimmering around her. She was like an angel. You didn't notice the trach, you didn't notice crossed little eyes, you couldn't tell her feet are as flat as pancakes. She was perfect in every way. All I know, is Gods angels are working over time at Give Kids The World and we felt their presence so intensely.

And with that...I must go and get tissue.

I will definetley keep your friend the baby girl and her family along with your daughter in my prayers.
Add me to the group praying.

And, the previous post about the little princess singing her heart out was really sweet!!

Thank you all so much!!:grouphug: Baby Natalie is still fighting and I believe the family is seeing the blessings!

I would like to thank all of you for your prayers for my friend Amy and her baby. I am saddened to say that she did not make it :sad1: I would appreciate it if you could turn your prayers to the family, because they will need it in their time of grief. I love Amy amd her family and its hard sometimes to understand how things like this happen to the best people, but I know we will all find peace somehow.

Her name is Natalie Marie, and I know Heaven got another beautiful Angel :littleangel:

I sort of figured out a way around the problem, at least to see what's available. I just checked four adults. That gave me the dates and times available. Then this morning I called and asked the Res line to change the Castle ADR since that one I had to pay in advance for. I just checked the site again and my screen shows the drop down boxes for number of adults and number of children but nothing for ages. Weird.

Thanks for taking the time to explain some of the GKTW events. It certainly helps to get an idea of which ones our kids would not want to miss and which ones would just be fun if happen to be there. If any others want to share their experiences it would be great to hear multiple perspectives!

The Hogans blog was amazing. It was one I hadn't come across yet. I choked back tears several times. Thank you for posting the link here! This board is so amazing, and I am grateful that you enjoy spending time here Maroo.:worship:

Can I smile and cry at the same time???

Oh no!!!!!!

I have been praying and praying. This is NOT what I wanted to hear. That is the third person on my prayer list from the DIS in the last week that has died. I am so sorry for her. That is just horrible. :sad2: We will continue to keep them all in our prayers.

I just went back and looked...and maybe I didn't explain it very well...

You put the # of adults in first...Then put # of children. Once you put there there are 2 children a box will pop up that says "Please specify children ages" or something like that. And if you said you have 2 children you will have 2 boxes show up. But that is after you put that you have 2 children.

Does that make sense at all?

And you are so welcome! I am so glad to be able to help you guys. The DIS has helped me SOOOO much - I am just passing on the magic!

And the Hogan's blog is awesome!

So is Amber Greenawalt's...if you ever want to see it. Her son Sebastian is a former wish child and she has 3 kids. Now her youngest has been diagnosed with a mitochondrial disorder and has more needs than her wish child did. Her life is an inspiration to me! And how she documents it on her blog is amazing, too. She updates that thing several times a week with tons of pictures. Of EVERYTHING.

You explained it fine, but for whatever reason my computer is just not showing it. I entered in the adults, then the kids and then hit enter because I didn't see any other boxes and it returns me to the same page with a red sentence saying I need to enter the ages. That sentence has a linked cursor but when I click on it I don't go anywhere. I tried it on multiple restaurants but it's always the same. I even checked my profile to see if I could add kids ages on there but it doesn't ask for them anywhere. Next time I have access to a different computer maybe I'll try it and see what happens. Thanks for trying to help....

I read a few pages of Amber's blog but I didn't see the MAW trip. I'll have to search it better tomorrow. She does a great job with the pics though. I love lots of pics!

Oh....

EEK...

She doesn't have a MAW TR on there yet...

I think she just doesn't think she can do it justice? She keeps wanting to take time out to "really" write all about it...and time has gotten away from her.

Not a month after they got back, her DD started having all kinds of issues and was in and out of the hospital. She also spent a lot of time online doing research and was able to get her to the right hospital/dr to be diagnosed.

Now here life is filled with dr visits (for both kids) and PT, OT, Speech, etc for her DD.

But her blog is encouraging and very interesting to follow.

Sorry for that confusion!

I originally posted before I read to the end of this thread. As a mother to twins who were born at 26 weeks, I can relate to the fragile hold these premies have on life. I am so sorry that your friend's little one did not make it. I will say a prayer for her, her parents and all those who will support her parents in their time of grief. My little miracle babies just turned 11. I will hold them closer to me tonight and thank God once again.
