Major Netflix Changes Underway

I can only stream when I'm away from home so I can't justify that expense. So I'll rent a couple of "old" movies that I can't get from Blockbuster/Redbox, then I'll be canceling my account before the price hike. I too have the dvd sitting around a little too long to justify the expense.

When they started offering stream only I jumped on it right away and got rid of the DVD option since I would rather go to RedBox when I want instead of having to wait...it was prob more expensive that way but it worked for me...while I would like a bigger stream library, I find plenty of content to watch for me and the kids

I may cancel. To be honest we end up renting the movies we want to watch from amazon anyway because they release them quicker.

Cancelled as soon as I got the email. Made me realize we don't use it that much and therefore can't justify the increase.

To keep my plan the same, I would have gone from a bill of approx $10/mo to $15/mo. Sorry - but that is a 50% increase in price for us. Can I afford it - sure. But I'm more put off by the % change in cost, especially since we only go through about 4-5 movies a month max.

DH uses the streaming on occasion but we agree with others that the selection (and sometimes the quality) is poor. As soon as I got my email today, we cancelled that and kept the DVD service. We watch one a week and we always have another 2 days after I send in the previous.

So I can understand the negative responses.

I was annoyed when I read about the changes, but I think this works out for me. I don't use Netflix as much as I should, and I definitely am better with the streaming than the discs. While I was happy paying $15/month for a service I don't take full advantage of, $20/month is too much. So I'll drop the discs and just keep the streaming videos.

Thanks, Netflix! You saved me almost $100 a year

I'd love to drop the DVDs and get the streaming only, but there's such limited content. They rarely have new movies. I'm liking the idea of going to the library for DVDs.

Agreed. If anything, it makes sense to drop the streaming.

I don't understand why this upsets anyone. Netflix is a business. In order to keep reinventing their business model, they have to charge what they feel the market can hold.

Right now we have the streaming only plan , which is holding steady @ 7.99.

If I want something more current I go to RedBox, for a dollar.

I will stick with the streaming. I love my old series. And I just recently did a Eureka marathon. They had every episode with the exception of the most recent season. I have every eclectic tastes. I would love some more classic movies. Like Hitchcock.

The only reason that everything available on DVD isn't available for streaming is that the studios are ridiculous with how they sell the rights to the movies.

Netflix would love to stream every movie ever made but the studios don't allow them to. Eventually they will get the many problems with copyright law worked out but until then we are stuck with the current system which makes no sense. If I want to watch a movie it shouldn't matter what medium it is deliver on, just that I have paid for it.

Unfortunately the MPAA hasn't learned any lessons from the RIAA. If you make it easier to pirate than to purchase your product legally people will pirate. For example you can download an ISO of any movie you want from pirate sites yet they don't let me do it from legal sites. Pathetic.

I'm all for Eureka marathons. Just finished it myself.

As to eclectic, I don't recommend Twin Peaks marathons. Four episodes in a row and I was having a conversation with a log.

Only a few bucks more for us-we'll keep it though maybe drop to 1 or 2 discs at a time. This and hulu+ enabled us to drop cable-still waaaaayyyy cheaper.

The market may not hold this at all. This was a hot topic among my facebook friends yesterday as it was here, and everybody was at least going to scale back their subscription if not cancel altogether.

I think they went too far and they're going to pay for that.

Marital harmony. Cathie watches DVDs not available at Redbox or Blockbuster. I would otherwise be content to stream.

I think Netflix is hoping people drop the DVD service and go somewhere else to get physical discs. I don't know for certain but I have a feeling that is a loss leader for them and the only reason they even still send discs is because they can't stream everything.

This is one of those times where they kind of want to lose some of the business. We do that here. Once we want to stop using a loss leader but can't totally get rid of it we price it so that people either switch to something that makes us money or pay the new price and it is no longer a loss leader.

Totally true. When NBC took their releases off iTunes, piracy climbed something like 30%. I would be curious to see how the Netflix issues affect the piracy rate.

What's interesting to me is a fair number of Disney new releases are up for Netflix streaming.

For the moment I'm sticking with streaming Netflix. We have a RedBox in my supermarket so if I really want something on DVD I'll just go there.
