Main Street Horses...The baby is finally here!

We knew this horse had a gold tooth and it became Coltons mission to find Lillian's horse on our last trip. He got it everytime he rode (4X) and the CMs at the carousel were amazed that a 6 year old knew it was Lillian's horse.

When I told Colton that Lillian's horse was named "Goldie" he said "Of course I should have thought of that!" LOL

Thank you everyone for the very nice pictures. I love horses too. :)
Are there 28 horses now, or 32? For in 2008, there were 32 horses. They are stabled behind ToonTown. If you purchase Adventures by Disneyland, or if it is a part of a Disney auction, then you may visit Circle D Ranch. Every year that I visit Disneyland, I ask if one may now visit the horses there, and the answer remains the same. I am sorry, but unless........... the public is not currently allowed to do so. I can see for safety/insurance reasons why that is the case. But still all the same, maybe small groups could be allowed, several times a day. Where everyone is very well observed. For many people do not know much to anything at all about horses. I have many years of experience with horses, so I know that I am not going to do anything that is not so smart. But how can Disney know that for certain. Although I would be more than happy to take a test, both on paper and directly with the horses. I know how to take care of horses properly. And if there is something that I do not know (For no one knows it all) I will find the answer and or solution. I have thought about looking into taking care of all of the Disney animals for a long time now, however, I have not inquired as of yet, because I do not live close by and they probably are not hiring.

Yes, there are currently 28 horses. My daughter was able to interview one of the Circle D employees last month and they had 28 at that time .... plus a donkey, some turkeys, goats, sheep, a cockatoo and a few other critters.

I was really surprised at how many horses are there. Their work hours are short though (3-4 hours a day, 3 days a weeks), so I guess they need a lot in the rotation.

I would love to tour it someday.

They have the Budweiser horses stabled at Sea World in San Diego. The public can see them all in their stalls and, one at time, can pet and take a photo with one of the horses attended by one of the handlers...if Sea World can figure it out, you'd think D'Land could do so too - especially since the D'Land horses are much more used to being around mobs of guests every day!

I like the call name Pocket by the way Cute!.

I am finding that lots of people like his call name. He is a Quarter - Paint cross (a sorrel with only one white spot above his right front leg). My DH claims he came up with the name, but I pretty sure I did. He was given to us by my sister-in-law. She once sold him to someone she knew, but found out that he was neglected. She took him back 150 pounds underweight and a mess. She couldn't afford him and asked if we would take him. We were very very green at the time, but she kept on saying that would be good for us. We agreed, but he was a handful. He was probably abused and not fed (he was still 75 pounds underweight when we got him), head shy and wasn't ridden in two years. Training? Some, but not lots of experience. Nice fit for some greenhorns. We spent 6 months just feeding, lounging and walking him around the ranch. He turned out to be a gorgeous horse. He is is very intelligent, athletic, and tries so hard to do what you ask. An unusual combination and I am lucky to have him.

I wanted to call him "Pocket" because my sister-in-law insisted he was a "pocket" horse. Funny, huh? Well he is on his to becoming a "Pocket" horse. We are sending him to be trained by Richard Winters in Ojai.

I would imagine that there isn't any room for the public to visit. Circle D Ranch is only 5 acres, which is very small for 28 draft horses. There has to be room for round pens, tack rooms, and wash racks at the very least. Not to mention the liability. Horses are horses and even the well trained and well conditioned horses have their moments.

At WDW, guests can walk into a small area of the stables and take a look. You can also book a horseback ride. Of course, Tri Circle Ranch is a lot bigger than DL's Circle D ranch and is in Florida where the liability laws are different.

TheColtonsMom, I forgot to ask: did your mare have her foal? I would like to see a picture when you can get to it.

Still no baby and no sign of really active labor (some contractions but very far apart still) so we are still waiting! Be assured as soon as he/she arrives I will post photos on this thread.

I love all the pictures of the disney horses. As a child that is all I ever wanted was a horse. I did get to ride at my grandmas house in Mexico when I would visit. Thank you everyone for sharing their pictures.

I absolutely will
I really like Sulley & Triton (even if he has retired) Other names suggested around the boards that are in contention are Phillipe (Horse from B&TB) Naveen (prince from the princess & the frog) and Samson (Prince Phillips Horse in Sleeping Beauty) Keep it coming folks...If we get a little boy we are thinking of posting a poll.
!

I like the name Naveen that would be fun if you posted a poll for the name if you get a little boy

Just so you all don't think I forgot to post a pic of our baby...after a month of vet visits to keep her from going into labor too soon. Doc finally releases her to go ahead and still nothing but really far apart contractions. I guess just like a human baby it will arrive when ready and I Will post pics and/or a poll if needed when the time comes.

Maximus is the horse in Tangled.

You have sure received all sorts of great suggestions. If you want to go with something truly representing Disney you could always go with Walt or Mickey.

Still willing to take suggstions but here are the top contenders at this time

Triton
Samson
Iago
Naveen
Charming
Flynn Ryder
Maximus
Gaston
DIS
Mickey
Walt

If you have suggestions keep in mind we rarely use "people" names for our animals so unless it is really unusual prob wouldn't get in the running. Since after this one there are 2 more babies due later in the season we will probably run the poll at some point even if this first one is a filly named Daisy.

I did take some fat pictures of Rowan today (I wish she would just have it already! and I think she does too she is really fat and slow right now) and if Photobucket speeds up a bit I will post them later on.

Photobucket hurry up! I would love to see pictures of Rowan. I hope she has that foal soon.

TheColtonsMom, thanks for the update on your mare. Sending good thoughts that she has a healthy and happy foal when all is said and done. :goodvibes

Oh what a great fun thread! I love horses too but never had one. So how can you tell the horses names? Very interesting! I so love learning new things about Disneyland! Keeps my trips exciting- and amazes the fam that I know so much! hehe Thanks to all my Disfriends! Cant wait to see the pic of your new addition!

I just ask the drivers. The drivers are also the horse's grooms. They know a lot about each horse. But please forgive them if they seem distracted. Their first priority is the horses and guest' safety. So they must keep an eye on the horse they are handling. If it isn't too busy, they are usually good about answering your questions. It is always good to approach the horse's side and not the horse's head. They don't like the horse's head petted by people and they will always ask you to pet the horse's side instead.
