More sad news from the menagerie on our farm. Our beloved (and really, REALLY old) barn cat RED was found dead this morning. He was so very sick and I had planned on having our vet come out here on Friday to euthanize him at home so I wouldn't have to traumatize him with a ride in the cat carrier and car. I'd prayed hard that God would just take him in his sleep one night so I wouldn't have to be the one to make the call again. My prayers were answered. I found him laying in the middle of the barn aisle, right where I'm sure he thought I would be sure to find him. The last few days he had grown increasingly snuggly, and yesterday he didn't want to eat at all. he just wanted to be pet. He was SO sick (either FIV or leukemia). There was no fat left on him anywhere, and he looked like a skeleton with hair.

Now he's over the rainbow bridge...fat and happy and snuggling with his "wife" Momma Cat who died earlier this year. I'm just sad, cause he loved me so much, and I'll miss him, but I know he's not in pain anymore.

 It's always said to lose an animal......even when we know they have reached a point were it's better for them to go.

Awww  It sounds like his passing was painless and easy. I'm glad you didn't have to call the vet out. Your kitty knew you were struggling with letting go. That's why he let go for you. I'm sure he knew you loved him so much.

I am so sorry! Both of my kitties (16 and 12 yrs old) are sick and I'm dreading the end.
I'm glad that your prayers were answered and that Red is not suffering. It's so painful to lose our pets but all the years of love are still worth it.

I'm also fearing it for my 14 yr old cat, Guinevere. I lost her sister about 5 years ago. Disappeared.

It is amazing how pets are so small and yet they touch our lives in such large way... I firmly believe you will see your sweet kitty again... and until then he is in a better place. :littleangel:My thoughts are with you and your family.

I have always believed in a Kitty Heaven where we'll see all our beloved kitties again.

So sorry to hear about Red. Sounds like you had a very special bond. I am a cat lover and dread the day I have to say good bye to my precious Camilla.Glad to hear you did not have to take Red for the ride to the vet. Putting my other feline baby to rest was one of the worst things I have had to do. I was tearful reading your story as I grew up always surrounded by MANY barn cats. That is where and how my love of cats began. I have many happy memories of the cats in my life.
