Magnet thieves!

I REALLY want to do magnets but this is the very reason why I might not.

And I don't feel super comfortable to personalize them... it just makes me feel funny to have our names on the door.

I am personalizing ours with our nick names. I don't want anyone knocking on the door if my ds is in there and calling out his name. He is 13 but still. So instead of our real names, I'll be putting Goofygal GoofyGuy and GoofyBoy, which are names we have used for years! I'm hesitant to even use our last names, but that might help deter people from taking them.

Wow, the magnets sound like such a cute idea. This might be a dumb question but how do I make my own magnets??? I am not the craftiest person but I'd love to have some personalized magnets for our upcoming cruise:)

I feel bad for those of you who had yours stolen. It is so disheartening when something like that happens. I'll never understand how someone could just steal something that doesn't belong to them!

I designed mine online. Then took the designs to office max and they printed them on cardstock with a glossy finish. I bought peel and stick magnets and put the kids to work and they put them on the back of each one. That's it. I didn't laminate, because we just throw the signs away when we get home. I do mine for about 20 dollars, but I make about 50 signs for the 7 day trip. I switch them out each day and the generic ones, I leave up for the whole cruise.

You can find lots of examples of FEs by looking it up on the DIS DCL FAQ thread at the top of this forum. It is short for Fish Extender and is like a Christmas stocking on the cruise if you participate in the DIS cruise group for your cruise.

Hey Mikmin,

The FE (Fish Extender) is a hanging pouch, so to say, that you hang from the metal fish clip next to your cabin door. On some DIS meets, they arrange for gift exchanges where DISers exchange little gifts with each other and place them in the fish extenders.

Here's a thread about FE gifts.

Just curious, what is a FE gift?:rolleyes1

You can see examples of fish extenders in my post # 29 and in dredick's post # 39. If you find a cruise meet thread for your sailing they may have someone who organizes an FE exchange for your group. They're used sorta like Xmas stockings to exchange small gifts with those who participate in your cruise meet exchange and they hang off of the pewter fish that are beside your door (hence why they are called "fish extenders"). People often give things like small dry erase boards, pens & pencils, candy, magnets, stickers etc. Our group was small (about 12 cabins I think) and we had 2 girls who volunteered to make all of our FE's for us...they were personalized with our DIS names etc. They were really special gifts in of themselves. Each one was unique and the exchange was a lot of fun!:goodvibes It was a blast to return to our room to see if we had any new surprises.

Well after reading this post on Friday night, I made sure that I made some stickers for the back of all our magnetics. I put them on before I laminated them.
"Shame on YOU!!"
This magnet was stolen
From Cabin #XXXX
Feb 28- Mar9 2009"

Hope that helps me out!! There are only a few that are not personalized, and if they "walk" I guess someone needed them worse than me.:confused3

I LOVE the Coach ears!!!

Our dress up Mickey and his tuxedo (minus the pants) got stolen from our door on night 2 or 3 of our cruise last fall.

Then, at the end of the cruise (maybe thursday night) our family sign (Casa De Day) which was a very intricate mickey mouse pirate, got stolen as well and it was personalized!!

I'm totally putting the stolen from stickers on next time... I'll probably leave the room number off until we get our stateroom, then write it in w/ a sharpie. At least that way if it's a kid, hopefully their parents will notice.

Losing the magnets isn't a trip ruiner in itself, but it still is disheartening.

after reading this i'm wondering how many things from the FE's get stolen???

are the doors insides metal too - maybe i'll save our small cute magnets for the inside for DD to play with and decorate and leave the personalized ones for the outter door.

The entire door is metal.

On our last DCL sailing we had a LOT of DIS folks on board - in fact... at thye time of the sailing it had the HIGHEST repeat patron ratio of any DCL cruise. And as such, we had a number of fun diversions organized. ONE of which was a magnetic dry erase memo board for every cabin wanting one. I was sort of "in charge" of organizing that one.

Well... we divided the task of distributing a couple hundred or so of these among a few fellow DIS folks - and after I placed my first dozen memo boards I immediately noticed ONE of the mag memo boards I had placed - not more than 15 minutesd earlier - had dissappeared! I mused.. gee... did someone pinch it or was it taken down for some other reason by the occupants? Well ... the next day I noticed one of the memo boards on a door which was NOT on my list. Later I happened to see who was going into that cabin and it was some teens. Ah-HA!

So I thought I had caught the thieves!

At any rate... I did have a coupe of magnets taken off my door too... but all of my magnets had my name and cabin number on the BACK of every magnet. If they still wanted my magnets that bad then they could have them. Nothing on my door was THAT precious, as I knew they were unsecured.

I enjoy taking as many vinyl magnets as I can tp the ship, and just putting them on doors as I walk by, just spreading the magic as it were...
