Magicians & Jugglers & a Clown Slide, OH MY! We're going to the BWI... A Nov 2010 PTR

:offtopic: Why does the Off-Topic guy have to look so mean anyway??? :confused3

I just thought I'd share DS8's first school project. He is in third grade and this year is when they start with a few little projects. Their very first one is to build a 'Pig House'. They have been reading a series of what are called Fractured Fairy tales about the Three Little Pigs. It's just cute little alternate stories about the Three Little Pigs. So at the end of the series they are to build a pig house to keep the wolf out and write a 10-15 sentence report from the pig's perspective about how/why his house will keep the wolf out!

Well, DS had it in his mind that he was going to build a 'Pig Castle', but keep it boyish of course (as boyish as a castle can be)! :rotfl: And here it is~

He did all of it himself, except I helped him glue on all those popsicle sticks and DH helped him with the drawbridge string. I remember from when DS11 was in third grade, some kids will come in with big huge elaborate pig houses that obviously their parents built. Which is so irritating. But I also remember DS11 getting an A+ on his little made-by-himself pig house! So I don't know what parents are hoping to gain by doing it for them. :confused3

Anyway - just wanted to share DS's 'Pig Castle' with you all!! :goodvibes

I love the idea of a pig castle! That is so cute and you are right about the projects that are so elaborate and the teacher surely knows it is more the parents work than the students

I helped my DS's mostly suggestions and supervised but I always had a fear of them coming home in tears if theirs did not get a good mark. My own mother never believed in helping me and one year my project for the science fair (grammer school) ended up in the back room with the other rejects, only the best ones were put on display, my best friends father had just about done hers entirely and there it sat proudly for all to see

That's what I hate about school projects. Some kids don't have parents that are interested in helping them, or the resources to do so. And other parents are so competitive that they do the whole dang thing.

Well, all that plus last year when DS11 had to do a project on the Mexican-American War and was told he could use his Lego's and half of them came up missing while it was on display. :headache:

First off, hope you find the GC's for your son's bday. That will be terrible if you can't get one. You might ask customer service if they have any in the back. Bowling............... that willl be fun.:cool1:

The whole menu for F&W looks soooooo good. Except the Escargot from France and the Mussels from Belgium. ewwwwww. Mark talks all the time about how good the mussles were when he lived in Belgium- so I'm sure they will be good. But they gross me out.:lmao: Will you get anything???

LOVE the pig castle!!!! :lovestruc:lovestruc Great job!!!!!! Tell him that Belle would love to have a castle for her pig- the stuffed animal that I bought for her last year when she came down with the Swine.:rotfl2:
His name is "King Louis, the Woo-Pig-Fluie, Hamthrax The Great". She adores pigs. I can't wait to show her the castle. Very talented, that boy!!! (I personally love the sharks- they add a special element of "Oh crap, don't fall into the water".):goodvibes

I need to stop at the store again maybe Friday and see if they got anymore gift cards in. :wizard: Yes, bowling should be interesting. :rotfl:

I knew you would like the F&W menu. Epcot and food, what could be better? :lovestruc Will I get anything??? Well, actually there is very little on that huge list I would eat! The cheese fondue with croutons and roasted potatoes sounds good. . . Not sure what else yet. . . Maybe a strawberry or chocolate dessert! :thumbsup2

I forgot about Belle's piggy. I bet she will like the pig castle! :goodvibes Yes, and as if the sharks weren't enough to keep the wolf out he had to add the 2 army men. :upsidedow:rotfl:

I hope things are going well for you at school Mari. :goodvibes I know you are working so hard.

Yeah, we are getting closer!! :cool1: The kids are excited, but to them 30-something days is still a long time away. :faint: :rotfl:

In all my trips I have never even seen Pick a Pearl. :confused3 I want to find it this time and watch. Not sure if I'll actually do it or not. Maybe. . .

We did it in Japan this trip - it will be coming up in my TR shortly!

I am the adventurous eater in our family, although Paige is getting there. She's at least willing to try things. DH is more meat and potatoes. Sarah - no way. I would LOVE to go to F&W someday and just spend two days grazing around WS!!

Your son's Pig House/Castle is awesome!! I especially like the sharks in the moat!
My kids' school does a science fair every year and I have seen the same thing happen. This last year I let Sarah use the computer to print some stuff rather than hand write it, but that's it. The fourth grade teachers emphasized at Parent night that they want the children to do the work! Hope some people will listen!!

Now that I've looked up the F&W Festival menu, we may just do that one day. Just grab small portions long the way!

I hope you are able to talk Logan into a November trip! :wizard:

I figure Logan will probably like just about everything on the list, so I can just try what he gets.

Your son's project is super cute. I love the army men guards

I will be looking forward to reading about Pick a Pearl in your TR. :goodvibes

I bet you would love the F&W Festival!

It's a shame parents do that. Good for your teachers emphasizing that!

That sounds like a good idea! :thumbsup2

Thanks! :goodvibes

I love your DS's pig castle! He is very creative! :thumbsup2 And the army dudes on top add that special masculine touch. ;) That is sure to earn him an A!

We never did our kids' projects for them, but I can't say we didn't "help". Usually it was because the thing was due the next day and they had barely started. I'll never forget one year when my DS was in 5th or 6th grade, and he had to do an Indian diorama. Of course he had waited until the last minute, plus he had a football game that afternoon. And we know that football takes precedence over academics in the South. :rotfl2: So of course I'm helping him that night, but only with the hot gluing. Well, to this day I still have a little scar on one of my fingers from the hot glue gun. Lesson learned.

I hope you are able to find the gift card! Good luck! :goodvibes

Yum, that Kaki Gori sounds like something I would love!

:guilty: :rotfl2:

I guess I do have a little stinky streak in me. ;)

I agree with you on the escargot and mussels. Just the word mussels sounds gross. And I eat some things others would call gross! I guess it's what you grew up on.

Your son's pig castle rocks!!! As a former 3rd grade teacher :teacher:, I can tell you that I would give that project an A all day long!!! :thumbsup2

Thank you both!! :goodvibes

He had to write a 10-15 sentence report to go along with it. Well, he wrote 10. That kid does not do anymore than he absolutely has to. :upsidedow

I can't believe you got a scar from the hot glue gun. That must have hurt!

I hope I can get the gift card too or else he is going to have to take a rain-check on it.

I'll be sure to let you know how the Kaki Gori is! :thumbsup2

Yep, it was one of those hi-temp guns that my DH had in the storage room, not the craft kind. It is on my left middle finger. I wonder if that means something........;)

 I bet you're right!!! :rotfl2:

I couldn't imagine standing in Once Upon a Toy in DTD waiting on him to spend $500. :faint: We are usually in there for what seems like forever when he only has $100 to spend. :rotfl:

I don't know...it might go faster, because he wouldn't have to decide between things as much...
I'm sure you could make up a really cute certificate to give to him in place of the Gift Card for the time being.
