We are going down to disney for the holidays and I was wondering if you can use Magical Express for the luggage only ...
DH wants to keep everything a surprize for our DD's ... they know nothing of the trip and he wants to keep the resort a secret untill the very end ... he is willing to pay for a limo to take us from the airport to the resort to make it even more magical. (We are staying at a deluxe for the first time ... AKL.)
I still want Magical Express to get our luggage and take it to the room.
Can we do this ???????????

Thanks for any info..

At present time you can use the luggage delivery service with no penalty. Luggage or coach service is free to those who have reservations in the Disney resorts and a reservation with the DME..

thanks for the info..
sorry to open up a "heated" topic ... I did not realize.

Here are the 'facts'....Disney has said, in it's FAQ section in DME site, that you may not book luggage only transferr. Now, this 'could' mean that you can't call Disney/DME and book a ride for only your luggage, not any people. Or, it could mean that Disney does not want people changing their minds after booking DME for themselves and their luggage and then sending just their luggage to the resort and either renting a car or hiring a towncar service for the people that were booked to ride the DME bus.
It is open to interpretation..plain and simple. So.....as of this moment, there have been plenty of guests who have booked DME, as a guest and luggage transfer, and then not ridden the bus, but used a rental or towncar service. Their luggage has gotten to the resort just fine.

However, this could change at any time. I'm sure that no one is going to be arriving at the resort to find that their luggage is still at MCO. I'm sure that we will hear of any changes Disney may make in this regard before it actually happens. In fact, no one has heard anything about changes to the DME service.

This is a heated subject. There are many of us who feel that using DME solely for luggage transfer is contrary to what Disney wants. But, there are others who feel that it's no biggie...that it's a good idea to send your bags on with DME and then find other means of transport to your resort.
It's up to the individual to decide for themselves how they wish to handle it.

Disney doesn't want you to use DME as a luggage-only service, but at the present time it can be used in this way. Let me explain ....

On the WDW website's DME FAQ, it clearly states that DME can't be used as a luggage-only service. However, it reportedly clearly states in their contract with the airport authority that Disney will transport all DME-tagged luggage, period (there's reportedly no clause that states they won't transport DME-tagged luggage if the owner doesn't ride the bus).

So they appear to be saying one thing to the public while saying and doing another thing behind closed doors and in reality.

There's one potential downside to using DME as a luggage service but not having anyone from your party use the bus. It's a tiny risk, but a risk nonetheless that you should be aware of in order to make an informed decision.

If the airline misdirects your luggage:

If you rode the DME bus ...
... then DME knows how many bags of yours to expect. If they don't show up in the system in a reasonable amount of time, DME will begin searching for your bags and will also act as your agent with the airline to get your bags to MCO and then will deliver them with other DME luggage that's arriving. Your luggage will get to you rather late, but it will still be delivered to your room. You won't know what happened, and your normal reaction will be to blame DME for the very delayed luggage delivery even though it was the fault of the airline and DME, in fact, heped you out a great deal.

If you didn't ride the DME bus ...
... then DME is not responsible for your luggage. They don't have any way of knowing that you are expecting them to handle it for you. If it never arrived at MCO, DME won't go looking for it and won't go interfacing with your airline because they won't know they were supposed to have it in the first place. So you wait and wait and wait for your luggage, and hours later it's still not in your room. DME won't help you track it down if you call them, since you didn't use the system. You'll have to deal directly with your airline, but by now many hours have already passed. When the bags are eventually flown to MCO, they will either be handed over to DME or will be delivered to you by courier.

Airline screw-ups with luggage happen, but it's still not at all a common occurrence. In other words, the odds of your lugagge falling through the cracks of the airline-DME transaction are very low, but you still should be aware of how things would go.

Thanks again for the info ...
I think we will trash the limo idea ... It would have been a magical surprise but it sounds way to complicated and controversial.
I bought special luggage for the trip too ... with an African design on them so we can not let the girls see the new stuff or the surprise would be spoiled. I guess we will go back to telling them the resort surprise at breakfast time instead of as we drive up to the resort.

Just curious, how were you planning to hide the luggage from them when you checked it at your home airport? If you have that figured out then it seems you could move your children slightly out of earshot when your husband checks in at DME.

Another option would be to give them a clue to where they are staying at breakfast, maybe another as you board the plan and finally a third before you board the bus. Remember anticipation is a huge part of the fun of vacations. Thats why these boards are so popular!! Give them a little time to anticipate the fun.

We have a countdown at our house. It was made up of 31 Mickey heads with a date on all of them. They are all mixed up. Every night my son has to find today's date (which he has discussed that day at calendar time in Kindergarten). Then he counts them all to see how many days are left. He sleeps with the Mickey head he takes off. Gotta love the excitement and anticipation that is building up for him and the teachable moments!

Complicated? Not really ... at least I don't think so. The only complication would be if you had an airline-based luggage problem.

Controversial??? I say this in a funny way, not a sarcastic way ... it's not like there are protesters at the airport who will try to "save" you from using a car service while using DME for luggage. The only controversy is here is cyber-space. Seriously, don't make a decision based on the fact that this can be a heated topic on a fairly anonymous Internet message board.

The other thing to keep in mind is how kids like to 'anticipate' stuff. For my dd, now almost 14, anticipating the upcoming trip is half the fun. I've tried to keep a trip or two a surprise but always fail in my attempts. So...if I were you, I think I would use DME, have your dh check in while you and the kids wait in the lounge area across from the checkin desk. You will then be directed to a bus for your resort. This might be a fun time to tell the kids where they are going.....this way they have something to think about, to be happy about, to bug you about. I just love watching the excitement in the kids as they board that bus and then get to watch the video...so wonderful.

We leave very early Wed. ... I have to pack on Monday during the day because I have to work on Tuesday and that night we have a big high school band concert for my oldest DD ... My dad is going to take us to the airport that day so he is going to "hide" our luggage in his car on Monday and when we get to the airport on Wed. morning I will tell the girls I have to go to the bathroom and the guys will handle the luggage curb side.
Well ... that is what I was thinking ...
Personally I want to spill the beans that morning but DH wants all the "anticipation." I have been keeping this secret since early February when we originally booked this Christmas Adventure.

Sorry, I just re-read this and had to weigh in again ....

On this board, I'm one of the original and most vocal DME fans. I think it's a fabulous service. Even before DME started in May 2005, there were false and malicious rumors about how supposedly terrible DME was, and after being one of the first people to use it and also after communicating with others like me, I took it upon myself to try to help other people by spreading truth rather than malicious rumors.

Over time, almost all of the malicious rumors have gone the way of the dinosaur, but they've been replaced by fear/suspicion of the unknown as well as innocent misinformation and bad assumptions. So I still rattle around and try to set the record straight, as well as offer my opinion when appropriate.

From the beginning, I've never been "against" car services ... I've always said they have their place for those who want a level and type of service that DME simply can't provide, and was never intended to provide.

After re-reading your post and noticing that you and your husband want to make the beginning of this trip "even more magical" for your kids, let me try to nudge you towards using a car service. The driver will help you with your bags at the airport, and Bell Services will help you with the bags once you're brought to the resort. If you have a good and personable driver, he/she can address your kids by name and get your little princesses even more excited about the trip they're starting. If you think a private ride will make it a more magical vacation for your kids, and you have the money to spend on it, then just go for it.

I've used DME twice with my kids, but I knew for them the mode of transportation wouldn't matter one bit. As a matter of fact, a bus was probably more special for them, as they never get to ride in one (not even a yellow school bus!) except at WDW.

Go with your instincts. Treat your kids!

One other thought... since, most of the time, any given DME bus delivers Guests to two, three, or four different resorts, and since again most of the time (but not always) Animal Kingdom Lodge - as the furthest resort from the airport - is often the last stop, you could play, "Hmm, what do you think, should we stay here?" at each stop. One of you could ask, and the kids could offer input, and the other parent could say no, or "Let's wait and see what the other hotels look like" or something, and then when you get to AKL, 'decide' suddenly to stay there.

kaytieeldr ... that sounds like a great idea ...

Thanks

Does anyone know which resorts usually go with the AKL and which come first ... we usually stay at CBR and I know that it is usually the first Magaical Express stop (the beach club and boardwalk come after CBR.)

The times I have used DME at POP, the bus stopped at POP, CSR and AKL...Most of the time POP was first, with AKL being last. But one time AKL was first and POP was last.
Love the idea of saying..."Hmmm, should we stay here? Nah, not crazy about this one, let's wait." Too funny.
