The Year of a Million Dreams…Actually only 999,999…because I’ve got dibs on one, and it’s coming true in 6 months!
Our First Family Trip to Disney World
October 17th-20th~AKL October 20th-28th~Offsite

Okay…so I’m new to the DISboards, new to Disney, new to Pre-Trip Reports…I admit, I didn’t know what one actually was until the other day! I guess I’m what most would consider a “newbie” to all of this stuff! I’ve been inspired by some wonderful DISer’s who have so graciously shared their pre-trip/trip reports and decided that I would take the almighty plunge and attempt one myself. If all else fails, I’ll have some wonderful journaling for our family to look back upon.

I’ll begin by introducing “Our” Cast and a little bit of background…
Hi! I’m Kristi! I’m 29 (and I’m in absolute denial that 30 is right around the corner!)…
A picture of DH and I

I’ve been a Stay-at-home mom (aka Domestic Engineer) for the last 8 years until our daughter started Kindergarten this past fall. Now I Substitute Teach :teacher: at the school that my children attend, which has been a fantastic blessing! I’ve been to DW/Orlando once, when I was 18 for DECA (Marketing) National Competition, and unfortunately, I don’t recall any “magic” in that trip:sad1: . Rather, it was very busy and rushed and I wasn’t able to enjoy what Disney really had to offer at the time. The photos from that trip are sketchy at best…about a dozen from It’s a Small World, a couple nice ones of the Castle at MK, a pic of Goofy, a pic of the sign at Space Mountain, Back to the Future (Univ.). We were a bunch of Park-Hopping, crazed-teenagers, with a couple of hours to kill and an early curfew:scared1: . Sooo…. ultimately, I don’t count that trip. I’m the Designated Disney Planner for our first family vacation to the World and I love every second of it! It’s totally an Obsessive Compulsive DISorder, so buckle up and hang on tight! Or just grab some popcornpopcorn:: and get comfy…I’m sure this will be loooonnnng, but FUN!

My DH, Danny…He is the most wonderful hubby any woman could ask for! Facilities Manager…laid back…go with the flow kind of guy! We’ve been together since we were 14, so I guess we are Jr. High School Sweethearts! We’ve been married for 9 years this coming September…hmmm…10th anniversary is right around the corner~ quite possibly the perfect excuse to plan the next Disney trip:scratchin !!!! He’s not a huge Disney fanatic, but he has always loved Pluto. He’s been to DW three times…once when he was 15months old (His mom says it was pretty miserable~ middle of summer and he wanted to be carried every where~ and he wasn’t a petite toddler!)…again when he was 14 (basically thought he was “too cool”:cool2: for Disney at that point) and the same DECA trip (see above) at 18. He was always a little hesitant about going to Disney World for this reason or that…too expensive, kids are too young, not enough vacation time…you name it, we’ve used it as an excuse. Finally, we’ve come to the ultimate conclusion, that I’m sure many DISer’s have realized, that timing may never be perfect, there may never be enough money, something will always come up, …but at the end of the day, the family time, the memories, the break in the daily grind will be priceless and worth every penny;) .

DS8, Tyler…Our Firstborn and Huge sports fan, especially Football (Go Pack!) and Nascar. He’s somewhat of a perfectionist, loves to learn (about anything at all, really) and finds all of the Disney hype displayed by the ladies (DD and myself) in our house to be rather amusing…but no matter how hard he tries:cool2: , I can tell he is just bursting at the seams with excitement!:cool1: Disneywise, He’s always loved Buzz, Woody, Sully, Mike, Cars, etc. He’s very intrigued about the whole Disney experience and is trying to figure out our odds of being chosen to stay in the castle (Did I mention, he’s really smart as well! ). I bought him Birnbaums Disney for Kids by Kids and he’s enjoying his own personal trip planning!:thumbsup2
A pic of Tyler...

DD6, Kayla…Our Very Own Princessprincess: ! Kayla is a free spirit and has all the love in the world to give. She loves the Princesses, especially Cinderella and is totally excited about our Disney World trip…definitely a girl after her mama’s heart :cloud9: as she asks me almost daily “What new plans are you making for our trip?” While her big brother is figuring out our chances of being chosen to stay in the castle, Kayla is just very optimistic and hopeful that we will be chosen. Gotta love it- The magic of Disney at work!
Here's Kayla:
kaylabeach.jpg

For part of our vacation, my Wonderful In-laws will be joining us as well. I think they are about as excited as us to see the magic through the eyes of our kiddos! They have been to DW twice (see above) My DM-in-law was teasing me about my Disney obsession, specifically about ADR’s…and she said “Are you telling me that if I walk into a restaurant for bfast/lunch/dinner on DW property without an ADR that they will tell me that they can’t seat us?” I said “exactly, or we may have to wait two hours” I think maybe things have changed quite a bit over the last 15 years!

Anyways…we had been talking about taking a Disney trip for about a year, and nothing really ever came of it, other than a conversation piece over dinner. But back in Feb., the wheels started turning and I (like many others) figured that what better way to be able to splurge on a DW trip, other than with a Tax Refund! SO, I proposed the idea to my DH and he was game (had he known then that I was about to become a Disney Planning Nut, he may have opted not to take this trip!) I knew I had to get things rolling before it all became a passing thought:rotfl: . I ran out and bought the Unofficial Guide and Passporter, read them cover to cover, and started to get super excited! I found great airfares, around $780 for four of us, direct flights! We booked, bought and were on our way, right? According to my DH, that was all we had to do for this trip…the rest we could figure out when we get to Orlando!!! :confused3 I put my 20lbs worth of books down in front of him and said, as sweetly as I could…Honey, you just don’t understand, read these and you’ll know what I mean. Well, naturally, he was never going to read the UG and the Passporter (however, I have caught him thumbing through them every once in a while!) so the task was mine! People talk about doing the Disney parks commando style, well I was planning our vacation commando style:lmao: ! Last month, I was able to book us a package through AAA, including our stay at AKL (DD is soooo excited, she is the biggest animal lover!), 6 day MYW base tickets and DDP and we saved about $400.00 off of the rates had we purchased each item separately! :goodvibes

Soooo…that pretty much brings us up to date. I joined TGM yesterday, and I’ve already joined the online UG. I do have a couple of itineraries (yes, I do have multiples at this point), and I’ll post our itinerary for ADR’s/Parks later on today. Happy Reading!;)

Stay tuned…182 days to go and counting…ADR’s on Friday (nerve racking!)…Let the real fun begin!:woohoo:

Hi! Welcome to the Dis. You are going to LOVE AKL. My fiancee and I stayed there last November and absolutely loved it. It's wonderful. I cannot rave enough. Make sure you check out either Jiko or Boma too! Can't wait to read more :goodvibes

You're making me wnat to go again!!! I look forward to your Disney calls., LOL!!

Happy planning!!

Sorry my update is a little late…the beautiful weather kept us outdoors all weekend! :goodvibes So…I had my first experience with making ADR’s and everything went wonderfully:banana: ! The CM was very kind and helpful…not to mention patient, as I went on and on about my excitement:cool1: ! My DH was teasing me that “we’re not going to Disney for the dining experience, we’re going for the Disney experience” :rotfl: He just doesn’t get that they go hand in hand! :love2: Ahhh…he’ll be more appreciative when he actually has a place to eat and take a break instead of waiting for a table for hours! ;) Here’s our “first” itinerary along with the ADR line-up…would love your input, thoughts and suggestions! :dance3:
Sidenote: I did use TGM and UG (I think I can say this?:confused3 ) in making our choices. ADR's/Restaurant Choices in Purple.

Thanks for the encouragement! We can't wait! Congrats on your upcoming wedding and disneymoon:woohoo: I'm sure you guys will have a wonderfully amazing time!

Just a quick update on our planning!

I was able to change our Orlando bound flight without any fees, we’re arriving 6.5 hours earlier and it’s cheaper!!! Okay…okay…so to most people, this is no big deal. But…this is our first trip as a family, so I’m super excited! :yay: More time at Disney for less money~what a treat! :dance3: The reality of it all is that our airline has added an additional nonstop flight since we originally booked our tickets and these times are more desirable and just so happened to be a little cheaper! The credit we received from the airline is my excuse to go back the World!!!:cheer2:

Now we will be arriving in Orlando at Noon, so does anyone have any suggestions for ½ day of fun without using a park ticket? Any restaurant suggestions for our first evening (that we are not already trying out during our stay)? Happy planning to everyone!:goodvibes

So…it’s been a while since I last posted an update…sorry about that. I guess there really hasn’t been much to update: Flight is booked, Car Rental booked, Hotel/Dining/Ticket Package booked, ADR’s Made…What else is there to do? :confused3 Well…here’s a summary of what we’ve been up to with our Pre-Trip Planning!:goodvibes

I’ve been busy getting a binder together to keep our Trip Planning organized. ;) I found that I was always searching for various items and this has truly been a lifesaver…I would recommend a Binder to anyone planning a Disney trip! It keeps me sane and I have everything in one place…all of my paperwork from AAA, our Flight confirmation, Car Rental confirmation, misc. brochures, Maps, etc. I have our binder sectioned into Itinerary, Accommodations, Dining, Confirmation #’s, TourGuide Mike/Unofficial Guide, Misc. Brochures, Maps and Notes. Here’s a picture of our Binder cover and Itinerary:

In March, we purchased some T-shirts for our kiddos at the Disney Store Outlet for $2.99 a piece! :cool1: We definitely couldn’t pass up that bargain! Here’s a picture of the shirts we bought…

Last month, my DMIL was out rummaging and she called to let me know that there was a family having a sale with tons of brand new Disney stuff! Woo Hoo! So, off we went to check things out and it turned out that this lady works at a Disney Store…so they had loads of stuff! We bought a new sweatshirt for each of our kiddos…Lilo and Stitch for Tyler, Princesses for Kayla and they were $3.00 each! Then…Our Magical Find! pixiedust: Our DD spotted it first…it was the most beautiful Cinderella dress that we’ve ever seen! What do ya know? It’s Kayla’s size! It was brand new, with accessories and the gal was asking $40.00. Now that wasn’t unreasonable, but we’re on a budget…after all, we’re saving for Disney. So, we were getting ready to leave, without the dress:sad1: …and I asked DH if we could offer $30.00 if they didn’t sell it by the next day. I approached the kind lady, pitched her our offer, and she said she’d take $30 right away! :yay: We had one happy little girl…when the lady saw Kayla’s face she said, “That is what it’s all about…the Disney Magic!” I teared up and thanked her over and over! So now Kayla has her costume for MNSSHP! Here’s a pic with her dress…

kayladress.jpg

I also bought the kids each a light up fan at Big Lots, thanks again to a tip on the DISboards…I think they were $3.00 a piece, and they’ll be great for the parades!

Over the last few weeks, I’ve been collecting freebies (thanks to the Budget Board) and samples for our trip…like, deodorant, body wash, laundry soap and dishwasher soap (we are staying in a vacation home for part of our trip). It’s been tons of fun to go to the mailbox and find all sorts of surprises! Here’s a pic of the items we’ve collected so far…we’ve gathered everything in our “Everything for Disney Basket” thanks to a tip from the DISboards!

freestuff.jpg

We’re looking at adding an ADR for our night of arrival at either Kona or Ohana…I’ve heard and read some really great things about both. When I asked DH, he gave me the infamous “whatever you’d like to do, honey” line…soooo, no decision has been made yet. I’d love feedback or opinions on which one of these restaurants we should choose.

Our second dilemma is whether or not to add the Park Hopper option to our tickets. I’m not sure that we really need it, but it would be nice to have the flexibility as well. Decisions, Decisions!

This brings us up to date with our Pre-Trip Planning! Today we are officially 111 days from the start of our Disney Dream Vacation, and only 12 days from Double Digits!!!!!:dance3: Here’s a pic of our wonderful countdown calendar (Thanks to a fellow Diser!)

We’d love your input!

Thanks for taking the time to share in our planning excitement!

Passing the time until our trip by reading some pre-trip reports, and yours is the first one I open. Thanks for sharing and fueling my excitement, especially since our trips overlap a bit! :cool1:

We've eaten dinner at 'OHana on two occasions. They've got a couple of cute activities for the kiddos (coconut races and hula hoops), but we weren't fond of the food on the last trip. Some people love it, but some people don't. We won't be back for dinner unless they revert to their previous menu, JMO. The restaurant does have a fantastic view of the castle, though.

No opinion on Kona, but DH and I will be having breakfast there...alone!...during our trip. I'm sure whatever choice you make will be fantastic for your family!

My personal preference is Chef Mickey's for our arrival day/night. It's a tradition, and you just can't beat the atmosphere to get you in the Disney mood. Our last two trips we've ended up at a great table with a view of the Magic Kingdom. Can't beat dining with Mickey while watching the castle. :goodvibes

Thanks for reading!:cool1: We are really looking forward to AKL...although I'm a little nervous about the construction. I've been reading on here that AKL is calling 31 days ahead of arrival and moving people to alternative hotels:eek: I'm sure all of the hotels are fantastic, but our DD6 is a huge animal lover...so, hopefully and prayerfully, everything will stay as planned:goodvibes We are definately looking forward to trying Boma as well...we've ready some great reviews:thumbsup2

Hi! :wave2:

I just found your report. You're off to a great start. I do have to say I'm sorry your DS is a Packer's fan - of course, this is coming from a big Bears' family!! ;)

I wish I could help with the restaurants. My trip in August will be my first trip to all the parks and staying on-site. I have been to MK twice and Epcot once (but didn't make it to WS). I have only eaten at Pinocchio's in Fantasyland and had hot chocolate in Epcot (it was the best hot chocolate I have ever had!!). I'm sure you will have a great time with whatever you choose.

I'm looking forward to reading more!! :thumbsup2

Thanks for Reading! Even Bear Fans are welcome here!:rotfl: We live quite close to the WI/IL boarder, so our extended family is split between the Packers and the Bears:rolleyes:, but it's always great fun:woohoo: , as noone takes is too seriously (except maybe my DFIL and DH)!;) I'm off to read your Pre-trippie, I'll be sure to try the hot chocolate in Epcot!:)

Hi, First trips are such fun!:yay:
Make sure to buy each of your children a deposable camera and decorate it with Disney stickers.

Yea!! Here's a shout-out for being "first-timers with KIDS"!:cool1:

We took our kids (DD8 & DS6) for the first time in Oct. 2005. And yes, it is so MAGICAL:wizard: to experience Disney through your kids!

Here's a cute sight for your kids to print out and keep their own journals. My kids loved coming back to the hotel every night and jotting things down.
http://www.themouseforless.com/downl.../journal.shtml

I also looked over your itinerary-- Here are a few of my suggestions:
*Yes, get hopper passes. We didn't use them too much, but for the days that we went back to the resort for a swim after going to a park in the morning--- it was nice to have the option of going to a different park in the evening.

*We didn't do it----- But, I've read that a lot of "Dissers" go to Chef Mickey's for their first night dinner. It sounds great, and a fun way to kick off the vacation! Another great suggestion from the "DIS" is to go to Downtown Disney on the first night. (This is what we did). I was SHOCKED at all the things to do and see there!

*We had 9 days for our vacation (NOT enough! :) ) And although we saw mostly everything--- this would be my ideal time for each park.
MK------2 1/2 days
EPCOT-----2 days
MGM------1 1/2 days
AK-------1 day
DTD-----1 day
Seaworld------1 day
Typhoon or Blizzard------1 day

*I would also take a day to rest/swim and just hang at the resort---right in the middle of your vacation. Disney is such a "GO LIKE GANGBUSTERS" kind of vacation-- that you definitely need down time.

*If you can---- go to one of the water parks. We did Typhoon Lagoon on Oct. 6 and it was a BLAST! It opened at 10am so that gave us a free sleep-in day.

*Even given the ages of our kids (6 & 8)....... we still rented a double stroller at MK and Epcot. The poor little things get so tired and it was SO worth it to have a place for them to rest their legs. A stroller is also a great parade sight holder!

Well, I know that I have a ton more suggestions.... But, I will stop there!:yay:

Hope these help------ And have FUN planning!!:surfweb:

Thanks for reading! :goodvibes And Thanks for all of the wonderful suggestions! We'll take all the help we can get! ;) We are doing Chef Mickey's for Breakfast one day, so I'm not sure what we are going to do the first night yet...maybe Ohana or Kona. We'll probably kick back and enjoy our Resort the first day/night because I think we'll be "on the run" the rest of our stay on property and we'll have another low key day in the middle of our trip at our vacation home. I love the mouseforless website...I found really cool mousekeeping envelopes there!:cool1: We are still contemplating the stroller thing...we may just wait and see how they handle it! Thanks again for all of your tips!
