Magic Canadian From New York, Advice?

Can any previous cruisers comment on excursions. I thought I read before that there was a whale watching opportunity, but I cant find now.

Any thoughts on whether it would be ok to fly-in the day of the cruise? The flight would arrive around noon and we would request DCL transfers.

I like to arrive at least a day early. There are any number of reasons why a flight might be delayed or cancelled. Depending on where you are flying from, you may be lucky to get on another flight that arrives in time, but I wouldn't bet my cruise on it.

If you miss the ship, it'll be two days before you can meet it, and by then the cruise is half over.

We are taking the train and we are still going up a day early.

I have never flown in the day a cruise departed. I'm sure this family wishes they had made alternate plans: http://disboards.com/threads/flight-delay-and-will-miss-transatlantic-cruise.3510975/

On our first cruise we flew in the day of departure. I had wanted to fly in a day earlier but DW didn't want to spend the money on a hotel. Our flight was delayed due to a missing co-pilot. After about 30 minutes a replacement was found but the airline had already announced we would be placed on flights leaving the next day if the flight was cancelled. By then DW was a nervous wreck. We've always flown in at least a day early since then.

I'm enjoying the pics since we're cruising out of NY in November.

We did this cruise in Sept 2012 and LOVED it! We rented a car in both Halifax and St. John. We went to Peggy's Cove and the Bay of Fundy and walked around each city. The people there were so nice, especially in St. John. We had a great time and hope to go back one day. Enjoy your cruise!

We took the train to NYC and then a cab to the port. We stayed a night near Times Square after the cruise and ended up just walking to the hotel since the cab line was pretty long.

We're leaving for a land based vacation to include St John, NB and the Halifax area. If it will be useful, I'm happy to post a short review of what we did in those places when I get back.

Which side of the ship is best for viewing the city from your verandah?
