Okay trivia buffs.......maybe you have an answer. I thought the Magic and Wonder were essentially identical. So how come the Magic is 30 gross tons bigger?

Gross tons is displacement. I'm guessing it's due to fuel load since the Magic runs a longer itinerary?

Except the stats for the Magic I found were before the Wonder was built, back when the Magic was doing 3 and 4 day cruises.

I guess it depends on where you are getting the stats...

Some sites I've found says they're both 83,000 GRT while others say they are both 85,000 GRT.

The DCL website ways they are both 83,000

Except for theming, the ships are identical, from the same exact set of plans for construction. That was covered in the captain's talk today, by happenstance, which had the Captain along with the Chief Engineer, who has been an Engineer of the Magic since its construction.

On that, also take time for the captain's talk when they run it on board the Magic, they first run a video that covers everything in excellent detail as to what was done to the Magic when it was in for refit and drydock last year. A lot more was done than you think...

Guess if there is a list of how it is registered in the Bahamas that would be the best source. My source lists the Magic at 83338 and the Wonder at 83308. What's 30 tons among friends?

Goofy weighs 30 more than Donald??

I'd bet on typoville, myself.

Fincantieri (The company that actually built the ships) doesn't even list the two ships separately. It gives the following:

Gross tonnage: 83,400 tonnes

Also note that Gross tonnage is not a measure of displacement, or weight for that matter. It is a measurement of internal space, and actually is a measurment that originated based on how many barrels of wine the ship could hold.

What is Gross Tonnage?
Gross tonnage is a measure of the internal capacity of a ship. It is a cubic or space measurement of all areas of a vessel with some allowances or deductions for exempt spaces such as living quarters. (one measurement ton = 100 cu. ft.).

What is Net Tonnage?
Net tonnage is a measure of the internal capacity of a ship's cargo space volume only.

What is light weight tonnage?
Lightweight tonnage is the weight of the ship itself. The hull, machinery and all its fittings. Fuel, stores and crew are not included.

Well, at least I'm getting educated :jumping4:

A little depressed, because 1 year ago today we were all asleep in our hotel in Orlando waiting to board the Magic the next morning for a 7 day NYE cruise.
