Magic Bands 101

Question.. If your staying on disney property you get the magic bands.. What if you buy tix from a separate provider ( i can get discounted ones via work) do they get added to your bands when you arrive or do you just have bands and cards?? Or are the bands now irrelevant..

Nothing can be put on the bands. You link your ticket, regardless of where they are purchased, to your My Disney Experience profile. Your band(s) simply reads what is linked there.

When do most people put the magic bands on.:confused3

We put them on after we check in at POP in case we change the room. The magic band can open your room but if you change it you need to make sure the computer is updated before you use them. :surfweb:

I've heard that lots of people wear them on their flight to Orlando :p

We put ours on as soon as we got them at check-in in Feb. (first time ever having MBs and they were waiting for us at our resort - last minute trip.)

This trip, we have them in advance and will probably put them on before hitting the road :drive:

What happens if one of the magic bands gets "misplaced" before your trip? My 6 year old grand-daughter took hers out of the box and now I cannot find it>

If we are flying, I put mine on before we leave for the airport. You can wear them through security, even the full-body scanners, with no issues. If you are taking Magical Express you will need them at that time so I just find it easier to put it on when I get dressed that morning.

If we are driving I put it on when we arrive on property.

awesome thanks so much. sorry im sure that was asked a whooole lott of times !!

Sorry if this has been asked before, but how do magic bands work when you have a cast member getting you into the park each day? Also, can I make FP+ reservations in advance since I won't have an actual ticket yet? I will have a room only reservation at Pop. Thanks to anyone who can answer!

Unfortunately I believe you will be limited to making your FP+ selections once you arrive at the park. You need to have tickets linked to your MDEx profile to make advance FP+ selections.

What if you're not staying on the property. Can you still purchase the magic band and link your tickets to it? If so, how much are they and where can you buy them?

You can, but you don't need to. (And like MouseMomx2 said, your tickets aren't linked to the Magic Band, they're linked to your My Disney Experience account; the band is just a way to access what's linked there.) They cost $12.95, and I assume you can buy them pretty much anywhere on property.

So me, my wife, nephew, and my bro in law are staying at the OKW resort starting 11/14/14 and will get magic bands through our reservation. My in laws are staying off property at the same time. My question is if we want to purchase a memory maker package and have all 6 of us linked together on that would it be better for my in laws to purchase a magic band as soon as we get there(maybe in DT Disney) and link them to my account on MDE?

With that being said i know that out arriving week is one of the slower weeks of the year but is it needed to get FP for this trip in advance or just for a select few? If we buy tix through Undercover Tourist and have them shipped to us in advance can the in laws link the tix to MDE and get FP 30 days in advance?

Has anyone heard anything lately about themed magicbands (they had star wars ones for Star Wars Weekend) Wondered if there was any rumors or news about more themed ones on a more permanent basis. Will be there in October, will probably still be the regular colors. But wondered if perhaps something maybe could happen by then.

What a GREAT thread and a BIG "thanks" to the OP!!! ::yes::

So if I'm reading all these post correctly (honestly....I've skimmed since there are sooo many) all my information ie., tickets, FP+, dining plan will be "on" the Magic Band. And when I check in, all that will have to be "added" will be the room key and charge card. I believe I read somewhere that even the Magical Express info is on the band.

Actually, none of those things will be on the Magic Band. The bands store absolutely no information. Each band has a unique identifier that is linked to a specific person and his/her profile. Anything linked to that profile will be able to be read by the band.

If you do online check in you will add your credit card information at that time. Again, it is simply stored in your profile, it isn't put on the band at all. In addition, the band will be able to read your resort reservation from your profile. Since the computer system knows to which room you are assigned your band will work to open that door. If you do not do online check in you can have your credit card added to your profile (not to your band) at check in.

And yes, your MB will also be able to be used for Magical Express. Again, the information is stored in your profile and your band will read it. You will scan the band when you arrive at the MB desk and will be directed to the appropriate line.

Hope that helps. :)

I am not sure if this is on here as there are so many replies. We have magic bands from our trip in April. We are returning in November but will be staying off site and will be using military tickets that have to be activated at a customer relations. Can we bring our used magic bands and have them activated for our tickets?

Thank you so much for that explanation! I do believe I understand it now. :thumbsup2
