We are not going to disney until August. This morning i got to thinking about our Magic Bands. My DH has a lot of skin allergies, and more often then not has reactions to different things that touch his skin. IE. A watch.
With the MB sitting on his wrist for a little over a week i am concerned that he may break out in a severe rash around his wrist. The heat of August i am sure will not help as he will sweat under the band.
Has anyone had issues with this? I know that he could not wear the band and carry it in a different way, i would just be concerned that he would have a better chance of losing it dropping it etc if he had to do that. Does disney have an alternative to the MB for cases like this? Do they have extenders to make them longer so that they are looser on the wrist? I am sure that we will figure something out, just wanted to see what others thoughts were. Thanks!!
Oh yeah is it August yet?? :cool1:

I normally can't wear a watch for (it sounds like) much the same reasons as your DH. I have severe exczema and very sensitive skin. I never had a single problem with my MagicBand. Granted, unlike a lot of people, I did not wear it at night and nor did I wear it to swim (water and jewellery, for me, do not mix) but, for the 7 or 8 hours a day that I was wearing it, I had no problems. Unless he has huge wrists, it shouldn't be too tight on him anyway. They can be worn quite loose.

Thanks for easing my worries! I just do not want him to have an itchy annoying wrist for the length of our vacation. He has an average size wrist so if it can be worn loosely and if he takes it off when he is not in the parks then hopefully he is ok. It is crazy the things that can cause him issues, His belt for example. If he un tucks his shirt for any length of time he will get a rash around his waist. Sometimes if it is hot out he doesnt even need to untuck his shirt and he will get a rash. Thanks again.

Guests do not need to wear (or even use) a MagicBand.

They can either just carry the MB in their pocket and only pull it out for use at a Mickey-head touch-points, or just not carry the MB at all and, instead, use a standard flat plastic ticket at the touch-points.

I bought one of the cloth covers for mine, not because of any allergic reaction but just to make it more comfortable in hot weather. The cloth cover covers the band completely for me.

I have VERY sensitive skin and never even considered that I would be allergic. YIKES! :scared1:

You may consider getting him an RFID card instead of a band! I think you can still get those and they do the same things as the bands.

I did this, also. A single cover cost 5 or 6 dollars and I felt it was worth every penny. I got mine in my resort gift shop. I just wish I had thought of it 3 days earlier. I didn't have any skin reaction to the MB but I did sweat under it and just didn't like how it felt.

Thanks for all of the ideas. I knew I could count on the dis to help me figure it out. I didn't realize you could still get cards that's good to know! I also may be able to make a cover before we leave once I get my bands! I wanted to personalize them anyways so that will be how I do his.

My DH put his in his cargo short pocket and just took it out when he needed to use it for attractions...he does not like wearing it because he says it makes his wrist sweat :)

My daughter did break out into a rash from the magic band. It lasted a week after she stopped putting it on. She either attached her MB to her belt loop or her water lanyard. I saw a CM who had it attached to a retractable badge holder that had a carabiner . He said it was issued to him. We've been on the lookout for something similar.

The card may just be easier!

a friend with an allergy to latex had a reaction to the magic bands.

Oh that's not good. I wonder if others have had that problem?? I am allergic to latex. I get.....itchy H I V E S! What a miserable way to spend a vacation.

I got out my portable surgical tool kit and gently cut my band open and pulled out the chip. I put it in my shorts pocket and it works just fine. Feels like a coin in the pocket.

I read somewhere that if you have nickel allergies, the bands may cause a problem. Don't know if that's actually true or not.

Same issues here--I even broke out from my Jawbone UP (which is made of silicon, so should be hypo-allergenic). I plan to take my MB off at night and for showers/swimming. If I remember, I'll also try to switch which arm I wear it on each day, but that may turn out to be inconvenient due to the positioning of the scanners. Applying a little baby powder under the band a few times a day may also help keep the area dry and less likely to break out.

Yikes I didn't even think of the latex issue I assumed these days that it would be free of latex ok so he can't wear it at all because he is totally allergic to latex! Good to know! You guys are the best!

So I tend to break out skin wise as well.

I made sure to wear it a bit loose so that air could circulate.

Take it off whenever possible and wipe down the MB (I just used a damp cloth).

Wash the skin really good under the band and allow to dry completely.

It's not so much the plastic that makes me break out but that the sweat I get under the plastic and any bacteria/dirt get trapped and moist and just lends itself to a almost athlete's foot type of breakout or an eczema patch.

No one has to *wear* a MB.
The T&C and emails and pages on the disney site about MB show that you can still get an RFID card. Even when I linked a newly made reservation to my MDE account it stated right there that I could get an RFID card.
When you receive the MBs he could practice with it on. See if he reacts.

Remember that many of us react to the heat, the sweat, and I firmly believe for me, the water on the attractions (b/c I break out where the water splashes me). Might not be the MBs at all. That's why it might be nice to wear it around at home, without the WDW factors, just to know.

:thumbsup2

The coverbands sold by WDW are a "swimsuit" material that wicks sweat away and dries quickly. It's smooth and feels nice, allows the MB to slide around the wrist, rather than get stuck on you with sweat.

Yep.

Here's a tutorial for making your own cover...oh, hey, wait, it's also info on what, exactly the MB is made from! Here.

You can get those sorts of badge holders on ebay. I bought DH a Seahawks one a few years ago, and some plain ones. You can also get them at most office supply stores. Probably amazon, too. Just be aware that MBs, if not "locked" with a coverband or even a slider in a crucial spot, CAN and DO tend to fall off. If it's on your wrist, you notice a lot quicker than if it's dangling on your hip.

And those badge holders break, too.

It's not made of latex. WDW is pretty good about the allergy issue, and isn't going to use something that's so blatantly allergenic. See the passporter blog post I linked to.
