Magic band question

We have a set of magic bands from May 2015 that we purchased for our trip (we stay offsite and wanted the convenience of the band)

I understand that the passive part of the rfid chip should work, and the active part for long range magic lasts 2-3 years.

I'm thinking we should be ok to re-use our MBs for our trip Sept 2016. Thoughts?

Also, if we get there and we find the long range portion does not work, can we purchase new MBs in the park and then link them to our tickets and all of our MDE experiences?

Thanks so much!

My opinion, for what it's worth, is yes your bands should still work. We have purchased several mb's and added them to our account (along with the colored ones sent for staying on site) and never had a problem switching out or using any of them with purchased tickets. If you want to buy new ones while at the parks you should have no problem adding them to your account.

Should not be a problem at all. The party line is 2-3 years, as you wrote, but I have not heard of many people having any issues with bands even older than that.

Just to make sure it's clear in your mind, tickets and other items are not linked to a MagicBand. An active MagicBand in your MDE profile is just a way to access all the information in your account -- tickets, fastpass and dining reservations, photopass, etc. Think of a band as a key to a door.

So yes, if you buy new bands and link them to your MDE account, they will be able to access all your current information when scanned. As will any other bands in your account.

I would think your MBs would be good for about 2-3 years AT LEAST (I hope so at least with some of the limited edition versions I've bought! ;) )

If they don't work and you're staying on-site the resort can provide you with grey ones or, yeah, you can just buy them at the park and activate 'em.

The only CATCH is I'm not sure if newly purchased MBs work as room keys after activation or if you need to have the resort do some "magic" to them. (They might work just fine but I recall some discussion a few years back that there was an issue...)

As far as I know the only obvious long range part of it is capturing pictures without scanning them, and the picture (video?) on Mine Train. So that's the only long range thing you might miss out on.

I still don't know how people feel bands are more convenient than cards, even though I've heard it repeatedly, but OK! :) I like a nice card. :)

Lol, yes for last trip we were just going to use our cards, but then thought using the MBs at the FP scanners would be easier for us than pulling cards out of our wallets every time- with the chance of other stuff falling out too! We just got the cheap plain bands (pink, orange, blue) and I had lots of fun decorating/ personalizing them. The ride pics and videos are important to us, so thanks for posting! :)

Thanks everyone for the helpful info- I'm feeling more confident that our old bands from last May will work, but if not, I feel good about a plan to buy replacements and link them in MDE.

Dis-ers are the best :flower1:

This will be only my 2nd time going back since magic bands... i am getting a diff color sent with the room than last time but taking both...my question is and it seemed like it was kind of answered, I should be able to use them interchangeably in Nov right? if i wanted

Yep, any active bands in your account can be used interchangeably. I have about 5 that I use. :)
