Ok so me and my family have a trip planned for Disney in early May. Now we went in September of last year and tested the bands. We all got bands of our color and they worked for our room, tickets, FP everything you name it they worked just fine. So we figured hey we will use these again right...wrong. We booked our Disney resort and they sent us "Passholder" bands. We chose our colors again and everything but our old bands still claim to be active. We then just got four grey bands that are said to be our room key bands! What the heck is going on? Why do we need room key bands if the room is linked to the bands? And do we use the new bands or the old ones?

Also we bought some friends Season passes and Disney sent them room bands for the room next to ours as well as passholder bands? Why all the bands? And they don't expect us to use them all do they?! Please help! Thanks!

You might want to bring the grey ones as backup, but if all your information is entered in MDE, your old bands should work just fine.

Yes you can use them again. If everything goes well you can use ANY band that is registered to you and active in MDX.

Right now they will send or distribute a new set of bands with EVERY separate room reservation. Plus an additional band for each Annual Passholder.

Ok thanks but are they going to continue to send out multiple bands? and let me get this straight. So the grey bands are for our room reservation. Our old ones were for our old trip and the new ones are our Annual Passholder bands? So like those bands were just given for being passholders?

Any active band in your MDE account can be used. Think of it like having duplicate car or house keys. One lock, but multiple keys can open it.

As long as your reservations, passes, and other stuff are in your MDE account, all your bands, old and new, can be used for hotel entry, park entry, etc.

All of your bands should work the same way, as each band is linked to the same information. And, yes, all APholders were sent MBs with exclusive sliders and discount cards. :)

Ok so I think I got this but lets be clear.

Passholder - As a passholder they sent me a band with the cars and pin as a way of showing im a passholder.

Room keys - These four bands are going to come EVERYTIME we make a hotel reservation at Disney? Is this for now or will they always do this? Seems like a waste of money to send out bands like that.

I mean isn't this a waste if money to send out bands like this? We don't need all the bands I mean what do you do with them!? But they will not send us passholder bands and stuff next time we book a trip to Disney right? Simply room bands?

Not really. All you have to do is use ONE set of bands. It makes no difference if you use the passholder band or a band that came with one of your resort reservations. The AP slider you received with your AP band can be put on any band, if you want to wear it. The discount card is for you to carry, because you have to show it if you want to redeem annual passholder discounts, or if you want your free parking.

You will receive only one passholder band, but every time you make a new room reservation, you will receive an additional band for each guest. This will happen because there is currently no way to opt out of receiving additional bands. You have to remember that nothing is stored on the bands. All they do is serve as a link to your MDX profile. So long as the band you use is assigned to you and is linked and active on your MDX profile, you can use it.

No, they are not simply room bands...they are just a new set of magic bands. They will all work interchangeable so it doesn't matter which one you wear. As for what to do with them, you decorate them with nailpolish or paint, bling them out, and coordinate them with your outfit! At least, that's what we do :)

Ok I see now that makes sense. So like will we receive new passholder bands when we renew or do they let us keep using the old ones? I guess my main thing is who wants a closet full of bands?

I don't think anyone really knows how they will do it in the future or if they will continue to send one for each resort stay and one for each AP.

Just wear all of your bands. That's what all the cool people are doing!

Thanks to everyone who replied. I think we are going to use our bands from September and then just take our discount cards they gave us with the passholder bands. We will also take the grey bands just in case. Hopefully these bands don't cost a lot to produce. With Disney sending them out like they do then I could see them having to jack up prices to pay for the manufacturing cost.

There are other options too:

1. You CAN recycle the bands. I had an AP band, and when we checked into the AK resort, they gave my mom and me a grey band (we both had color bands from previous visits). I had them link our previous tixs and room keys to our color bands and recycle the grey bands. Not a prob. Also, those HUGE unnecessary boxes that they come in can also be recycled.

2. They can be decorated by you if you feel inclined. Why not?

3. They can be used in the Disney Infinity game. Not sure how, but I have heard that there are things you can unlock in the game with the bands.

4. You can collect them all. I'm not that that type of person, but there are others out there that like to coordinate them to the outfit that they are wearing, or put silly names on them or whatever.

So, using the analogy above, the magic bands are indeed like duplicate keys, isn't it a bit risky to have all these bands?

I mean, yes you are supposed to need the matching finger scan to enter the parks but it seems like cast members have always been easy to convince to override the biometric scanners in the past.

Also, couldn't someone have access to your room if you dropped/lost one of the spare bands? I know it can get quite hectic getting all my family headed out to the park and things get dropped or left behind all the time. With all these extra bands floating around isn't there a security worry?

Going back to the OP, there will be three bands per person. If, like some people, you were to resort hop and have a split stay, you would add another magic band to the mix. Just seems a little risky to have all these extra keys floating around.

That's a good idea. We might take all of our bands and just link everything to the passholder bands. After that give them the room key bands they sent and the ones from September. This way we don't have to clear a rack in the closet for a bajillion magic bands. Also we know about the Disney Infinity thing. My nephew has the game and we placed the band on the portal and it gives you the dragon from New Fantasyland. Other then that nothing.

1. If you are not using previously issued bands, you can deactivate them in MDX.

2. That's up to the cast members as to whether they will allow biometric scanner override. Don't know what they see on their ipads though. And they're supposed to ask for an ID.

3. Only if they know where your resort is and which room is yours. Nor can they charge to your room without your PIN.

4. If you lose a band, go to guest services and they will deactivate it.

I have 4--one from each of the trips Ive taken since October. Here were my mistakes: not getting them all in different colors. I have three yellow and one orange. That wasn't too bright!

I've also used different bands on different wrists--also not too bright. When you have your band on one hand, you use the other for your finger scan. Naturally, I can't remember which band goes with which finger, so twice I've had to get pulled out of line and had my finger scan reset. I finally figured out what I was doing wrong!

Ok so another question. When the recycle these bands do they recycle the chip or the whole band? Surely not the entire thing since names are placed inside of them? Right?

Also this is totally off topic but I don't want to start another thread. Is there anywhere I can listen to Disney music like background music you hear in the parks? I don't want youtube. You know like music they play on Main Street or in other areas or on rides. Thanks!
