Magic Band Is Tracking Me And I Don't Like It

I did some resort hopping this week at WDW. A day later I'm getting emails from Disney. " We see that you recently visited the Wilderness Lodge. Please rate your experience ". Same type email 3 other times!! I even wore my three year old MB hoping the battery was dead. I guess it's still working! I hope my email doesn't start getting spammed by Disney every time I eat at their restaurant or shop in their stores.

Yea the wealth of data they must be building up is astronomical. Did you scan your band at any of those places for entry or purchase or have they just detected your presence?

I did not scan my band. Simply walked through the resorts. Now I did purchase something in one of the gift shops but used a CC not my MB. Scary !

Did you use the CC that is on file with your MDE account? If so, that might be the source of how they knew you were there, not the Magic Band.

We wanted the valet parking at the Contemporary to be charged to our room, but they could not read our Magic Bands. They asked if we had the CC on us that was connected to the room and with swiping that they were able to put the charge onto the room account.

One of the features of the MB's is Disney's ability to track and collect data on guests and crowd movement. The fast pass system is used to move guests within the parks based on data collected from the MB's.

Our neighbor stopped near a DVC booth to tie his kid's shoe and get him water. He got a call from DVC later that day thanking him for stopping by and offering to answer any questions he might have. He assumed the MB tracked him there and triggered the call.

An interesting thing though is although your CC is not linked Disney still knows based on the information it gathers when processing a credit card (i.e. name) and information from staying on property that you are you. The same happened with the keys to the world cards. Also credit cards now will give out your email if you allow electronic banking. That is how square and other digital merchant processing apps are able to send you a email receipt with out ever asking for your email. So Disney didn't even need the magicband to do what they did the magicband just streamlines that process.

Heh, heh. I can see it now, used in Defense: "No, officer, I wasn't anywhere near the scene of the stated crime. I was at WDW. Really. Yes, I can prove it. Phone Disney and ask them for my MB tracking history." Yep, that out to be solid evidence in a court of law, right?

It could with the rooms. Since room keys went digital (way before magicbands) more and more companies will look at the keycard records to see who accessed a room. So say your diamond ring was stolen out of the safe and you know it was there in the morning as you checked before you left but wasn't there when you came back they can check the keycard record to see who accessed your room while you were gone.
Before they use to have to try and triangulate based on schedules and theft reports to pin point exactly which person was doing it but not they can figure it out easier based on keycard data.

Also if you have a smart phone and don't really lock it down then google, apple, and a bunch of other maps have so much information about you. I was freaked out the first time I saw the tracking data in google and apple on my iphone. I turned it all off since then but I'm sure they still are gathering the data I just don't know if they are any more or not.

If it bothers you so much, take off the magic band and wrap it in foil.

Also, you can still get an old fashioned room key to use. I actually had to get one on my last visit because I left my room without my MB, but luckily with my ID. Front desk made a room key and it now shows up as a "Magic Band" in MDE. I meant to try if I told works as my ticket for parks (I think it should), but forgot about it. The room keys are passive and short distance. much less tracking. And you could even get a rfid-safe wallet to carry it around in.

I find this new dimension very creepy.....much too "Big Brother-y for me".
