Magic 11/16/02 Illness - THIS IS WHERE YOU CAN POST ABOUT THIS INCIDENT

Disney said yesterday that the sick crew were to be taken off the ship. Whether anything was spread before they got off is another issue. But DCL did say they would not stay onboard.

I HATE THE NEWS....I JUST CAME BACK IN FROM CATHING FOX NEWS AT PORT CANAVERAL AND ALL THE HOSTS BACK IN THE STUIDO ARE BASHING CRUISING!!!! THEY ARE SAYING HOW NONE OF THEM WILL EVER CRUISE AGAIN AND YOU ALWAYS GET SEA SICK, BLAH, BLAH, BLAH...EVEN THE REPORTER SAID HE AND HIS FAMILY CRUISE AND GOT SICK AN HOUR AFTER THEY SAILED....THEY WOULD NEVER DO IT AGAIN. THEY ARE GIVING CRUISING A BAD NAME!!!! REPORT THE FACTS, AND LEAVE YOUR PERSONAL COMMENTS OUT OF IT. On the other hands....maybe this will drop the price of future cruises!!!! They showed live footage from the inside the Magic, in the dining rooms.

Release the facts, correctly if possible.....I don't want to hear about how you do not like cruising.....blah, blah.....they more harm than good.

Just talked to my DW's best friend. She and her family are sailing today. They called the cruise line this morning and asked to be transfered to the person who was handling the questions about the virus. She was put on hold for a moment and then transferred to somebody at the terminal at Port Canaveral. The terminal opened at Noon today. They are serving breakfast and lunch in the terminal (and presumably dinner if the cruise is delayed long enough). The sailing today is definitely delayed and they weren't sure when it would be sailing. They will also be providing entertainment in the terminal.

Our friend isn't at all concerned about sailing today. After all, when this virus goes through her daughter's school, it affects far more than 3% of the school's population. A little extra vigilence with handwashing this week and she's sure they'll be fine.

(BTW, she said the rep she spoke to was very courteous and helpful.)

Dave,
we sailed on the july 4th cruise...
if you recall, there were many warnings right before about cruises being a possible target on the 4th of july...
so my husband called DCL at that time..
he was transferred right away to a person who was familiar and my husband siad the rep couldn't have been more forthcoming, courteous and reassuiring....they spoke for quite a while...
as with anything, a person or company shows its true colors in adversity...i think that's what sets DCL apart...at least for us...

...oh, I forgot to mention... the rep said that 20 passengers had decided to cancel from this sailing. Out of a full ship for a holiday sailing, given the option to cancel with no penalty, that's a pretty good vote of confidence!

Wow! I saw Fox talking about the illness this morning, and while there was some talk about how they had gotten sick on past cruises, I in no way thought they were saying what you are accusing them of. What they said didn't seem so bad to me at all.

Funny how two people can watch the same thing and get totally different things out of it. Hehehe. :)

If it is going to lower prices, I hope it happens before my cruise in March! :)

It would make more sence for Disney to switch over the wonder and the magic. Cancel the next wonder cruise (they would only have to pay to keep people in hotels for an extra three days verses seven) and send the magic guests out on the wonder. Clean the magic well-lt the crew rest and send the magic out for the four day cruise. That is one thing Disney had going for it that HAL did not, an identical ship that uses the same port. From a fiscal point of view they would stand to lose much more money (drinks, spa visits etc) on canceling a seven day than a three or a four. Also the 3/4 day people wanted to do the parks anyhow..

NOTE this is NOT anything that I heard from anyone- NOTHING REMOTELY OFFICIAL- don't want to start any rumors or panics, I am just sitting around thinking waiting for the sudefed to kick in and clear my clogged head.

To see if there were any update, I typed in Norwalk Virus Disney Magic.. well HEY people MAY be jumping the gun. apparently On June 4,2000 bakc when the magic did the bahamas cruise 3.8 percent of the people on board had Norwalk Like sympoms, the CDC did all kinds of tests etc and traced it back to the shrimp at the embarkation buffet. SO who knows until they do their tests, it may not even be Norwalk Virus!

so in order to cruise on the Wonder Sat instead of the Magic they would have to cancel the Thanksgiving cruise!

If it is really a stomach bug and NOT a food poisoning then it could have been picked up by one person anywhere. The incubation for a stomach bug is 1-2 days(and very contagious) so if it started on Weds (like they are reporting) then someone started it around Monday. All it takes is one person or a child to become infected...go to the daycare, etc and spread it. Then the parents get it, caregivers, siblings, etc. Esp w/ little kids...they don't always wash their hands, they put things in their mouths etc. As for cruising, yes people are more confined but you can catch a virus anywhere...even on an airplane, school, work! As everyone said, the best prevention is hand washing and keeping your immune system healthy.

Happy and Healthy Cruising...maybe this will make others more aware of good health practices...

I was just pointing out that fiscally it would be cheaper to cancel a shorter cruise. I personally think everything will be fine and all cruises will continue.

Okay, let's not get out of control with the speculation here. :)

Ann, I am almost positive it is not a food borne illness in this case; they are REALLY good at figuring that out on the ship, as they definitely track what and where people ate. The shrimp incident was a big deal at the time and they took it away for a long time after that before putting it back in the embarkation buffet. The ship's CDC sanitation scores show that they DO handle food well. :)

My cold medicine is kicking in, I can't speak (lost my voice now) so all I have left to do is sit around thinking up stuff:o
No one pay attenion to the sudefed high woman behind the curtain-she really has no idea what she is babbling about :)

I'm sure everything will be fine-it's Disney afterall

It's okay Ann, I know how miserable it is when you're sick and bored! ;)

Hope you start feeling better soon! :)

I just wanted to say that I hope all of you up and coming cruiser's have a great time!!!

Teri

Ann, I hope you are better. I had a DR. friend tell me that there is no way he would get on the ship. Then again, I have more faith in Disney. You at least have the advantage of reading accounts of people on this cruise to make sure the boat is really disinfected. ;)

Good Luck, and keep us posted on your travals...

Why would your doctor friend not get on?
I am sure that my medical ills of the moment will pass before two weeks go by.

Or do you mean he would not get on a ship that had a percentage of its passangers with gastroentestinis?

Working at a preschool I am exposed to so many things and sometimes (like now) pick up a virus BUT I would never consider stopping teaching, I love the kids. (and yes I do get gastrointestinies at least once a year, as much as we ask/supervise them to wash their hands and clean our own, germs happen)
Not to sound argumentative (and I have been alot today since I feel lousy so please excuse me if I do) but what does your doctor friend do when there is a bad outbreak in your town? Close his office, not go out? It sounds strange comming from a doctor when NO ONE even knows what exactly went on or how successful the decontamination process was, that he would not go. It is not like the ENTIRE ship got sick , only four percent. Probably right in line with most public schools at any given time in the winter. It is an unpleasent thing gastrointestinis (some worse than others) but certainly not life threatening unless you have a comprimised immune system are ederly, pregnant or very young. There is no evidence that people will continue to get ill (although on EVERY cruise some people get sick, on our last one last December our table mates were all ill for a day) ok time to take my temp and motrin again... I am sorry in advance if I offended anyone, I just don't see a need for panic. I mean Holy Cow the CDC has not even made a report yet.

I think he is diabetic, and he is a bit of a paranoid. As I said, I have more faith in Disney... He also called me the night before my dental surgery to give me a panic attack about the anesthesia...;)
