Madonna on Oprah-

What is American supposed to sound like? :confused3 I hear that all the time... I have a Miami/Spanish accent, but I think I speak English perfectly. I have friends in other parts the country that beg to differ  . I personally do not think there is a specific "American" language. Just MHO.

An American accent can be many things, but British-sounding is not one of them.

Madonna annoys me. I just see this whole adoption thing as her latest "look at me." Like Brangelina made adopting African children a fad or something. The kid's a human being, not a pet. :( Her whole career has been a matter of taking what someone else did first and better and pretending she invented it. As for her accent, she's had that for quite some time now, long before she moved to London. I've always assumed its just one of her many schemes used to reinvent herself.

I didnt watch.

But... Modanna started speaking with a fake British accent well before she moved to England. She made comments a number of years ago about how the British are so much smarter then the Americans based on their accent alone. And went on and on about how horribly dumb Americans were.

She made the comments to a radio station in NY & a couple of other places. The radio station in NY really bashed her at the time.

Once she finally moved to England, she had that accent mastered.

Uma Thurman tried to start using a British accent at one point to. I remember her on the Acadamy Awards or some other Award show. She came out to give an award & all of a sudden had a British accent. I was not the only one who thought people suddenly adopting accents were pretty silly because she got bashed by a lot of media outlets as well.

If you live somewhere, yes you can pick up some of the way people speak. But for the most part, you dont suddenly become British, especially when you are still living in NY. :lmao:

I am a NYer, and have been in TX for 5 years. I have never said "Y'all" and dont have any hint of a Southern accent. I still sound like a NYer. And my friends here remind me of it a lot when they ask me to say certian words because they think the way I say them is "cute".

Madonna is a pretender. Why anyone cares about her is beyond me.

Did you watch Mad Max? Watch any early career interviews? Mel totally had an accent.

So did Meryl Streep in "Sophie's Choice", "The French Lieutenant's Woman", "Bridges of Madison County", etc.

No, I was talking about my friend who's originally from Iowa, but living in Texas sounding like a Texan, she's pushing 40.

Oh, got it. My bad.

For those of you who think she sounds English, have you ever been to England, or talked to a native? Madonna sounded nothing like any Brit I've ever talked to.

I watched the interview and I only caught the very tiniest hint of an English accent on a couple of words. I was paying attention, because there was another thread like this one yesterday. To me, she had a bit of an accent I couldn't place, but she sounded very American.

If it is an English accent, some people pick up accents easily. I know I do. I picked up a couple of things from my English ex-boyfriend and came home from a week in Houston with a little drawl. Both were over 15 years ago, but I'm still known to say "have a go" and "y'all" in the same conversation. :confused3 :rotfl:

Ummm.. the Oprah I watched today was about HIV in America :confused3

The OP is talking about yesterday's show. Madonna has been talking like this since way before she moved to London. I'm thinking it was around the time of her Blonde Ambition tour. I also don't think it's a full British accent. It's more of a "proper", upper class accent.

I just finished waching the show from yesterday and I was quite impressed with her. I don't feel she's using a child to better her image. Madonna doesn't need that. I really feel she's trying to help suffering children. And David is a cutie!

Anyone watch All My Children? They way Madonna was saying "adoption" sounded just like Greg Madden to me! :scared1:

ick.

I have never been a Madonna fan, and can't stand about 99 percent of her music. However, over the past couple of years I have been very impressed with what I have seen of her on tv. She's seems to have become grounded and is a devoted parent. Her kids are fortunate to have her as a mother, and will enjoy the benefits for virtually unlimited resources as they grow up.
As for the accent...whatever.

I am British
She did not sound British

I was impressed by how she handled what has become a sad situation born out of something honourable.
