Excellent shots, too, rtphokie. How about you? What kind of equipment do you have?

Thanks!

First 2 in that post were taken a couple of months back with a Canon G3. I've recently upgraded (2 payments down, 8 to go) to a Canon Rebel XT. Both the bottom 2 shots were with the kit lens (18-55 mm) but I recently picked up a Sigma 75-200mm f4.5-5.6 cheep off ebay.

Can I play??? I'm still learning about photography. I don't think this one is truely macro but it's a close up!

Thanks for letting me join in the fun!

Wow, really? That bug is very impressive! I didn't know a kit lens with that range could get in that close.

THAT must have been a nice surprise to find when you dl'ed your photos! Were you shooting on a continuous setting? Is that how it happened? Or is this really just down to pure luck? :)

regular setting but i've been trying to get a butterfly pic for a long time so when i saw it i just kept snapping hoping he'd be close enough and he just happened to pose the right way :rotfl: no credit goes to me

I think I may have posted this before but it is pretty so here it is.

i got a cheap set of macro filters to try them out( i know i know cheap filters= not good but i am spending way too much money :) ) and they( 1,2,4X) work ok on my 28-135 Is 3.5-5.6 lens till i use the actual macro one or try to combine two then it just is totally foggy, won't focus ( to the point i can't even see the object)and i can't get it to even manual focus..the macro setting for that lens is 135 but the focus won't stay on macro with the close up filters on, it goes to infinity. do i need to try a different lens, like my 50 f1.8?( will need to get a ring if i do)

ok i got it to focus but i literally have to be right on top of it...is that normal? guessing perhaps this is the draw back of filters vs actual lens?( like anything over maybe 1 ft away is total blur the macro distance for that lens is .5m
Thanks

yes this is normal
afraid you were going to say that ...so guess i'll be saving up for a macro lens next as somehow i don't think a bug is going to want me hovering 2 inches away taking his picture

when i get the extension tubes i bought ( evidently next month, from australia :rotfl: ) will that be the case with them or will i have more room, other than due to the additional space for the tube i mean

ie my 50 mm f1.8 says macro at 4.5 m but doesn't tell you the macro ratio as far as i can tell so is it just a given it's like 1:4 or 5 or is there some way to tell what it is? i guess i want to know what the 1 in the "1:x" stands for and how you determine the last number (if you can)

what makes a macro lens a true macro lens, the way it's ground? ie why aren't all 50mm f2.5 lens macros

The "1" in 1:X refers to the life size of the subject. As far a I know, macro is alway compared to the life size. Which is 1.

So...

1:2 is one half life size.
1:3 is 1/3 life size.
1:4 is 1/4 life size.

and so on.

The ratio isn't alway evenly divided like that though. You could have a macro rating of 1:4.5 or something like that. That would make the image a little smaller than 1:4 (or 1/4 life size).

What makes a lens a true macro lens is the ability to focus close enough to get a 1:1 ratio. It has to do with the focus range not necessarily the focal length.

Took this the other day - this butterfly courteously perched on DW's finger for a nice macro close-up. Resized to fit the screen nicely:
