I don't have the right equipment for true macros. Sorry... It would have really come in handy for this first one...

not really all that close up but never saw this weed before

can some one tell me what dimensions are best for posting on here ???x///...mine are either huge or minuscule

800 on the long side is usually considered dial-up friendly

MIkeeee

I have seen those weeds. Those long hairs have tiny reverse barbs that hook on clothes and fur so the seed gets transported. If they get in your shoe they will dig in to your skin until it bleeds. In only a matter of minutes, sometimes. I am speaking from personal experience, of course.

i read about extension rings and a reverse ring( forget the exact name but it lets you put the lens on backward for more magnification) and wondering which is the best for an inexpensive macro application( or another option maybe)

if i am understanding the ring right you can't use auto focus ( or guessing any other auto stuff) with it but do you have to have any specific type lens? would my canon 50mmf1.8 auto focus work( except for the auto focus part) and isn't there some danger of damaging the mount end?

for the extension rings...would a set off ebay be ok? no glass is involved right? they are just tubes so as long as they fit could there be a reason to buy "expensive" vs "cheap as i can find"?

when i got my lens and stuff yesterday husband asked..."but this is all you need right?" silly silly boy

Been there, did that. Make sure you get pure white LEDs.

I just took this. There were two anoles on the tree out in front of my house obviously having a disagreement. Prior to me taking this, they both looked like they had blown themselves up with helium. They were, for anoles, HUGE! :rotfl:

Anyway, this guy was still at bit pumped.

You are correct about extension tubes, there is nothing inside them. Some have electrical contacts for the lens system and will allow autofocus and auto-aperture to still work (where the lens stays wide open until the moment of exposure).

One of the reasons to use a reversing ring is that most lenses are optimized for the lens-to-subject distance to be much greater than the lens-to-sensor distance. With extension tubes this relationship is reversed and the lens should work better if it is turned around to maintain that relationship.
With the reversing ring you would definitely lose autofocus and also auto-aperture, (unless the reversing ring somehow maintains the electrical contacts).
The 50 f1.8 would work well with all this.

Another option is Canon's 250D and 500D, high quality close-up lenses (with high-quality prices).

"but this is all you need, right..." ;) Nope, it never ends!
Welcome to a lifetime of fun, discovery, and more equipment! ;)

i like the creativity of this guy...

Not bad, I might have to make one of those!

The LED idea is good too, but might cause trouble with colors. White LEDs produce white light (duh) but the spectrum is not consistent, similar to most fluorescent lights. Mixing red, green, and blue LEDs is not as efficient but allows for better color mixing.

The LED idea is nice because it generates almost no heat and provides a modeling light for focusing.
I guess I need to order some LEDs... ;)

thanks bob for your as usual clear and concise explanation
