Would love to hear from anyone who has been to Mackinac Island...advice on best places to stay, what to do there, whatever you are willing to share...I have never been and am considering a trip there in June, from the Chicago area. Thanks in advance!:)

I'm heading up there this weekend. I'll be back later with some ideas for you.

For a place to stay, check out Main Street Inn and Suites...beautiful rooms and service.

I was going to suggest Main Street Inn and Suites, as well. Haven't stayed there yet, but I think it's new and should be quite nice.

Rent a bike and ride around the Island - lovely. Have some fudge :goodvibes

Hi, Donna! We stayed at the Lake VIew and it was beautiful. It's centrally located and in easy walking distance to the shops and the fort. I'd love to go back, as we went on a rainy weekend. :thumbsup2

It's a beautiful, very unique place to visit. I've been there several times and always enjoy it. DH and I spent the night at the Grand Hotel for our 6th wedding anniversary. It was a wonderful experience, but I'm not sure we'll ever repeat it as the rooms have really gone up in price. I think it's about $400 per night now. :( But if money isn't a problem, I would recommend staying there. A buffet breakfast and wonderful, elegant dinner (suits for men, dresses or pants suits for women) are included in the room price too. Go to their web site and look around.

Mission Point is another very nice resort on the island, and there are several other downtown hotels, plus bed & breakfast inns.

Don't stay at The Pines B&B though. DH and I stayed there for my 40th birthday and the bed was old, creaky and the mattress was in terrible shape. We kept rolling to the middle. Finally had had enough by 5 a.m. so got up and went for a bike ride. It was really neat to see the streets deserted except for one street washer!!

It is very nice to be there in the late evening, when the crowds have gone back to the mainland. Much quieter, and it's nice to hear the clip clop of horse hooves on the street.

You can take a guided horse and carriage tour, or do the same thing on your own if you like. Definitely rent bikes and ride around the island, it's only 7 or 8miles around I think. Buy fudge too! There is a butterfly house that is fun to go into, and lots of people enjoy the fort too.

Hope you have a great time!!

If you are interested in seeing some of the historic sites on the Island and in Mackinac City there is a seasonal pass that costs only $59 for the whole family and there are quite a few different locations that can be visited on the pass. The site is www.mackinacparks.com and it is a little tough to find the info abouot the pass but it is in there. Look around the site a little. We are planning to do this pass this summer. We will be camping in Mackinac City and ferrying over to the island a couple of times.

Glad to see this thread. We might go next year in our motorhome.

I haven't been to the island since I was a kid, but I've been to Mackinaw city a few time since then. that's just on the south side of the bridge. there are fun things to do there too. Fudge shoppes! and great restaurants. I remember camping right around this area too as a kid (which was too many years ago so I don't know if this has changed since then) on the otherside of the bridge is St Ignace and that's a great tourist town too. Plus, you can see a huge Paul Bonion(sp?) and his ox.
On the island I remember the horse/carriage rides and visiting fort mackinaw where they give tours of the old fort.
sorry I couldn't be of more help, I think you'll have fun. Just remember that being that far up north, it takes a little bit longer for it to warm up. June could still be cool.

Ok..I've tracked down some of my previous posts that may help you out with planning. A number of hotels/BB's on the Island are good, but some are much nicer than others. I cannot recommend Main Street Inn and Suites enough.

I do not recommend Mission Point Resort at all. Not one bit. And I speak for the 17 couples who were there in October 2006 with me on a retreat. Everything that could go wrong actually DID go wrong, including lost luggage, front desk telephone calls to rooms at 1am to see if you were the one snoring, to charging room accounts incorrectly, to old, nasty mattresses that were lumpy. Run. Run away! At least until they can pull their act together.

I'm not sure how much has changed as far as the increase in rates for the 2007 season from the 2006 season, but here's what I copied from previous posts:

On the Island, I highly recommend staying at the Main Street Inn and Suites. We had the deluxe interior room (no window, but a skylight) and loved it even though it was the smallest room and the least expensive.

I do not recommend Mission Point Resort to stay at, although I can recommend their breakfast buffet (approx. $13/person). We were just there in October 2006 and with recent changes in management, it was not a pleasant stay.

I posted this information regarding the Island last year, so I'll post it again if it will help with planning:

This link brings you to bike rental shops:
http://www.mackinac.com/content/services/rentals.html
I rented an adult bike with a tag-along for my son and we biked the 8.3 miles around the Island with no problem. My son is 10 years, with special needs, so that should give you some idea of the ease of the perimeter of the island. It takes approximately 1 hour to bike the perimeter peddling almost the entire time. We rented from a store called Del Ray Sol (I believe that's the name) and paid $11 for the hour for both the adult bike and tag-along. A deposit is left at the time you take the bikes, which is only charged to your account if you do not return the bicycles. Most of the bike rentals will provide helmets for the children. Tandems, child carriers, child seats, and tag-alongs can be rented at the various rental places along Main Street.

If you want to ride a horse, Cindy's Stables do a nice job. My daughter rode for an hour with a guide, helmet included, and had a very gentle horse. The fee was $30. I would recommend an earlier morning ride, as the horses aren't as tired. http://www.cindysridingstable.com/
You can rent a drive-your-own horse and buggy here: http://www.jacksliverystable.com/
I believe it's approximately $60/hour for a family of four and its a nice way to see some of the island.
You can also take a Carriage Tour of the island. http://www.mict.com/
Private tours will cost $80 for a family of four for an hour, and they usually bring you up and around the road in front of the Grand Hotel and then along the homes on the West Bluff.

You may not enter the Grand Hotel unless you are a guest or pay a fee of $12.

The Butterfly House is a nice place for the children. It's small, but they will let you return as many times as you wish while you are on the island. We were there for three days and we had about four trips to the Butterfly House. http://www.originalbutterflyhouse.com/

The Fort is really neat. If you plan on being in the area for a few days, you can get a Family Heritage pass for $59 that will allow you access to Fort Mackinac on the island, as well as Colonial Michilimackinac, the Old Mackinac Point Lighthouse and Mill Creek in Mackinaw City.

Ferries are all pretty much the same price. Adults run $19-20, while children are about half price. The ferries that run are the Arnold Line, the Star, and Shepler's. Ferries take approximately 20 minutes, with Arnold running catamarans and the Star line runs the ferries that shoot up a "rooster tail". Each ferry line has their own website and I believe all of them have coupons on their website for buy two adult tickets and get a child's ticket free or $9-10 off a third adult ticket.

As for restaurants on the island, I would not give a good review for Patrick Sinclair's Irish Pub. The food portion was tiny and the service was below par. Goodfellows at the Lakeview Hotel had pretty good pizza, as did 3 Brothers Sarducci on Main Street. Prices for both pizzas ran approximately $22 for a large with three items. Village Inn has fairly decent food. Nothing spectacular, but good. There is also a coupon at Restaurant. com for the Village Inn. Yankee Rebel Tavern is a really nice place also. Fast food places are abundant on the island offering burgers and chicken tenders. These will mostly run you about $5-6 dollars. Scalawags and Darrows in Mackinaw City are a must-do for whitefish and pie, respectively.

We'll be there the middle of June. We're staying at the Chippewa Hotel. We've stayed there in the past and like the location. They have some nice suite on the lake and it's close to everything.

Glad to see this thread. We might go next year in our motorhome.

No can do.:sad2: :sad2: :sad2:

No automobiles aloud on the island. You must leave your car on the main land and ferry over. You can get around the island by foot, bike or carriage.

The island does not allow motorized vehicles. You will need to park it and ferry over to the island.

You won't be able to take it to the Mackinac island but you can take it to Mackinac City. I know there's some nice RV parks there...then take a ferry over to the island for the day.

We have stayed at Mission Point and the Chippewa Hotel. MP is a long way from town, but doable. Chippewa Hotel is in town (if I remember correctly). Both were nice.

There is not a ton to do on the island itself. You can see and do everything in 2 days, staying only one night on the island. The fort is the biggest thing and if you like history. You can ride around the island on bikes (you can rent if you do not have yours). It is about 8 miles round trip. Lots of hiking. Shopping can take about an hour or two in town. Not sure when you are going in June, but mid-late June is lilac festival. We were there one year during father's day weekend and it was going on. Very pretty with all the lilacs in bloom.

We haven't been, but are going the week of 6/18. We are staying in MacKinac City. Maybe we'll see you around;)

I meant we'd be staying at a campground NEAR the island. I should have clarified that.

We have stayed numerous times on the Island and while there isn't alot to do, just the ambience of the Island itself is wonderful....it's a beautiful setting. While I have never stayed at Main Street Suites, everytime I have called to check availability, the service on the phone has been terrible, however I have always heard good things about the property by those that have stayed there.

The Iroquois is not only a wonderful place to stay, but also has a fabulous restaurant. For a B&B, the Cottage Inn is nice as is the Metivier Inn. The Grand Hotel is old and beautiful, but we prefer a little more casual atmosphere. Although if the weather is beautiful paying the $12 each to visit the grounds and have drinks on the porch is well worth the money.

As for Mission Pointe, stayed there once....never again...just not for us.

We are going to go in July and I think this time we are going to stay at the Harbour View Inn....it looks beautiful!

Have a wonderful trip!

We stay on the Island every year...I LOVE IT!! :thumbsup2

We have traditionally stayed at the Winderemere Hotel. It's wonderful...but there are no TVs in the rooms. This year I purchased a gift basket at a charity auction that was a "Mackinac Island" theme. In it we got a free ferry ride for two, one night's stay at the Market Street Inn, a picnic lunch and a private carriage tour of the island...I am SO excited. And DH is excited to have a TV in the room at the MSI!! <lol>

I would not recommed the Grand Hotel for lodging. The prices are outrageous and the hotel is, IMHO, in terrible shape. It needs A LOT of tlc. You could go there for the Sunday brunch if you're on the island on a Sunday...that way you can see the hotel (there is a fee of $12 to enter the hotel - even the porch! - if you're not a guest or don't have a dining reservation) and the brunch is really delicious.

I haven't stayed at Mission Resort, but have had dinner/drinks there. It's ok...but not my favorite. The Grand Hotel owns a restaurant that is near the golf course/airport on the island...it's called "The Woods". It's FANTASTIC, so if you can, make a reservation, grab a cab (yes, a horse-drawn cab!!) and head out there. Just walking around the golf-course and airport is fun...it's so beautiful.

IMHO, the beauty of Mackinac Island is the "back" of the island...away from Main Street. Get away from the hustle and bustle of the tourists, you'll be glad you did. And I agree with the person who said staying on the island is a whole other experience...when everyone leaves on the last ferry, it's a quiet, wonderful place. And waking up to the sound of horses coming down the street...WOW! :cloud9:

Enjoy the island! :flower3:

I have gone twice...am trying to get DH to go.

We stayed "offsite" in St. Ignace and then ferried over the first time.

Next time we stayed "onsite" at "The Murray". An old B&B. You park in a lot and then take your belongings/bike with you on the ferry.:thumbsup2

If you have bikes and like to ride them I recommend bringing them. Renting a bike is not cheap and that is your mode of transportation on the island.
It is 14 miles around.

So get in shape before you go! My dad calls it horse "crap" island. There are no cars however lots of horses. You get the picture.;)

Oh yea...doing brunch at the Grand is a MUST!!!! Best buffet ever.
