Mac Aperture (and other Mac questions)

I know there is at least 1 Aperture user here. I'm moving to a MacBook Pro and was thinking about having Aperture -preinstalled. I've been happy with iPhoto and Elements 3 but not that I have an XTi and have been playing with RAW, I thought I might upgrade. Elements 3 for Mac doesn't handle RAW files.

I have Photoshop CS for windows that I might install in Parallels.

And since I'm asking, if you have an Intel based Mac. Do you use any non-universal applications like Flash or Dreamweaver which would have to run under Rosetta? Adobe doesn't have universal versions out and I'm not sure I could afford the new release anyway.

iPhoto has a download you can get from apple that allows you to use RAW photos from the XTi, you can get it here for the Intel:

iPhoto customers can download and install the Digital Camera RAW Support Update 1.0.1 for PowerPC-based Macs or Intel-based Macs to add support for RAW files captured by the Canon Rebel XTi/400D, Nikon D80, and Pentax *ist DS."

I have played around wi Aperture a bit, but not near enough to offer any advice on it. I'm new to the dSLR (got a XTi a few weeks ago). I have PS CS2 I've used to create graphics for websites, but adjusting photos is still new to me, so I'm relying on a friend of mine to teach me.

i'm a huge fan of Aperture. instead of getting it pre-installed, you might want to try the free trial to see how you like it. you can also try the Adobe Lightroom beta.

for me, Aperture is indespensable for my workflow. i'm more than happy with its performance on my Macbook Pro and often use it at the field to print onsite. there is a learning curve, but it's fairly easy.

remember that most products receive RAW support through the OS. generally this will be provided in the software update, which come out every few weeks or so.

regarding CS2 - using your windows version in parallels would work, although it's going to be about the same as running the powerpc version directly under Rosetta. the nice thing about the mac version, is you can easily round-trip between CS2 and Aperture or Lightroom. you can have your license transferred from the windows version to the Mac one. as Darren pointed out, Apple has released a specific RAW upgrade for newer cameras.

i don't use flash or dreamweaver on the Mac - but based on my other Rosetta experiences, most everythig is pretty smooth. i've been more than happy with CS2 in Rosetta.
