I can't believe she actually was fast enought to catch it! DH said it probably had a heart attack. DH was outside with Mabel and saw her go after it....the rabbit just didn't know which way to go and was caught "off guard". Mabel grabbed it and came running to DH who was calling her. DH told her to "drop it" and she did. The poor thing was squealing and still alive and then just died right there in front of us...it was so sad...DH buried it behind the garage. Mabel didn't even draw any blood from it either.

Now that she got one, hopefully she won't get in the habit of it. We have quite a few rabbits around here. We also occasionally have 'possums that are really nasty....would hate for Mabel to get one of those. There was actually one on our fence in the back last Saturday night and Mabel was trying to "sniff it's butt" (you know how dogs are). Luckily, again DH was out there and actually picked Mabel up (all 75 lbs) and ran her inside. I went out to "scare" the possum away...and it just sat there and hissed at me showing its teeth...it didn't want to leave!

Aww. :(

My Maxie caught a squirrel once. By some accident or bad luck it was slow or she was fast. When she grabbed it, she had such a look of surprise on her fact. She dropped it immediately and just looked at it. It did die, but she didn't draw blood either. I know it was an accident and she refuses to chase them more than a few steps now.

My golden that died last fall got a rabbit once. There is a place under the fence where rabbits can get into the neighbor's yard and it missed the turn. I had never heard a rabbit scream before and I hope I never hear it again! Luckily the dog we have now hasn't caught anything but moles, and he can go ahead as far as I'm concerned.

Your dog is beautiful!!

A rabbit scream is probably one of the most horrifying thing to hear.

I am a rabbit breeder so occasionaly I have to hear that and its not pleasant.

Possums on the other hand......ewww!! Dont like those one bit

Our neighbors across the road and a little ways down have quite a menagerie of animals running around their yard: chickens, ducks, turkeys, rabbits, cats, dogs, etc. One of their rabbits hopped its way over to our yard and DH's dog (chocolate lab) caught it and killed it. I heard the poor little thing scream, it was a horrible sound. I felt so bad for the poor rabbit. I was mad at the dog for quite awhile afterward.

The following spring after Thumper joined our family (rescued ababdoned wild cottontail for those of you who haven't heard his "tail" ;) ) our cat Sabrina was outside. Earlier that day, I had noticed that a rabbit had made a nest in one of our flowerbeds and there were 4 baby bunnies inside....pretty close to being big enough to make it on their own. They were just starting to leave the nest. I was out in the back yard hanging laundry when I heard this God-awful screech! :earseek: I immediately knew what it was. I looked up and saw Sabrina, carrying one of the baby bunnies by the scruff of the neck the way Mommy cats carry their babies. She was carrying this little package over to me! I guess she figured since we already had one of them in the house, that's where this one belonged. :teeth: I told her to drop it, which she did. The little guy scurried on his way, no worse for wear.

Thankfully, she hasn't tried to bring me another one this past spring...the rabbits still nest in our flower beds!! :goodvibes

Poor bunny! Could have been worse, though. It could have been a skunk!!!

Awww, bummer. We have a lot of wild bunnies in our yard as well and I'm always afraid Liesl will get one. So far she hasn't - there are lots of places for them to run and hide. :goodvibes I hope I never hear that scream. :(

BTW, Lisa, did you happen to catch the Mohegan Sun/Walmart :rotfl: Dog Show last night - the Weimeraner won best in group, it was a beautiful dog, as is Mabel. We were disappointed no German Shepherd in the show, I guess it was just a small show. :confused3 My DS 8 is really getting interested in dogs so I let him stay up to watch. Std Poodle won Best in Show.
