I'm having dinner with your governor tonight. What is your opinion of him?

We have a mutual friend ,and she says he's the smartest person she's ever known. And she's the smartest person I've ever met - she was one of the founders of Bain.

Just wondered what the locals thought of him.

I personally disagree with his politics but I do agree that he is very intelligent and well spoken.

He is great in the looks dept and pretty fast on his feet with the humor. AS to his policys on Education...well just tell him his consituents think he needs to go back to school.

As a person - probably a pretty good guy. Did a nice job with the Olympics.

As governor - has spent much of his term traveling around the country bad mouthing Massachusetts. When he is in state, he tends to support bills such as the death penalty that are unpopular within the state (zero chance getting enacted) but make him look (he thinks) to folks outside the state. On the other hand, he really hasn't caused any harm, isn't a crook, etc. which puts him above a whole lot of politicians out there.

The words i would use to describe him are inappropriate for the DIS boards. I don't hold him in high regard at all and I can't wait to vote for a new governor. (I also feel this way about the governor of indiana where i go to school so.... lol)

As a college republican in massachusetts, I've had the opportunity to meet him several times. I agree he is a VERY well spoken and educated man and a real gentleman and statesman. I personally agree with most of his politics but to each their own.

Having spent a lot of the past 40 years in New Orleans I can TOTALLY understand that concept. Sometimes "not a crook" puts someone light years ahead of the rest of the field.

Wellesley Princess - are you a student at Wellesley? That is such a beautiful campus. One of my Stanford classmates lives in Wellesley, and I love it.

I went to Newcomb College (women's college of Tulane) before Stanford. Newcomb got eliminated in the Katrina aftermath - much to my chagrin. I am a big proponent of women's education.

Another Stanford classmate of mine was president of the Wellesley alumnae association when I was president of the Newcomg alumnae association.

He doesn't spend much time in our state, I'd almost forgotten he was the governor

You are intelligent and well educated - I'm sure you can give some specifics without using non DIS words.

People used to ask me about Bill Clinton all of the time (he and I are one day apart in age). Besides the fact that he groped at least half of my friends at one time or the other I could discuss his pros (very smart) and cons (lack of follow through and detail).

He is definitely squeaky clean, a gentleman, a great business man and a get-it-done kind of leader, as evidenced by Bain and the Olympics. I think he is using the governor role as a stepping stone to higher office, but hey, don't they all?

He is like central casting's version of the perfect President. It'll be VERY interesting to see how the rest of the country reacts to him.

That being said, I think he is a good man and I don't have a problem with him. I would like to see him mess his hair up a little...

I'm a die hard Massachusetts liberal, so I'm going to leave politics out of this. I think Romney is an extremely intelligent, loyal, honest, hard-working man, and I'm sad that he isn't running for Governor again. I think he's done a lot of good for this state and that we need more politicians like him. I wish we had a few Democrats who were a little more like him. But I digress...

He is well spoken and may be a nice person. However, he is a rather ineffective governor. Maybe if he stayed in the state long enough to see what is really going on, it might be different. He really needs to address the issue of all the jobs leaving the state and all the people who cannot get jobs here leaving the state.

He's very charismatic (my Dad calls him the Mormon televangelist), well spoken, and extremely sharp. A little on the slick side if you know what I mean. He kind of balances the line between televangelist and used car salesman.

I am very much not a fan of his politics. I think he gave the citizens of MA the big old shaft but it was pretty obvious from the get go that he was only using his election as a stepping stone for the Presidential election and he's been completely ineffectual. I currently live in RI and I have my own ineffectual governor.
He seems hell bent on making sure he is not a typical MA liberal by doing basically what salmoneous said.
I'm getting tired of crappy Republican governors in MA to be honest. It's time for a change.

Yeah - he is pretty cute. But seriously what is his policy on education. That's something that is pretty important to me too, but I have no clue what to do about the abysmal situations in some places. I have no clue about MA schools or educational policies.

I went to private colleges, but I am a big proponent of public secondary and elementary education. My high school (in Little Rock, AR of all places) is one of the top 20 public high schools in the nation. Many of my friends (and me too) graduated from college in 3 years because we took so much college level work in high school.

It's hard to believe that the same state can elect Romney and Kennedy to offices!

(that was not a slam as AR and LA have no claims to fame).

What he/she said!

I would love the chance to sit down and have dinner with him, but I'm not so sure he'd want to have dinner with me. And I suspect that I would leave the table feeling very unsatisfied.

I agree that he's been incredibly ineffective.

My family has been in Massachusetts since the Mayflower landed, and now we can't afford to live here. That just seems sad to me. People are leaving this state faster than any other state in the country, and all since he's been Governor.

The education system in the state has decreased steadily since he's been in office.

And while we can say that he didn't directly cause these problems, instead of staying here working to make them better and improve the state, he's traveling the country badmouthing us and campaigning for President. And the only thing he's actively participated in within the state legislature is in his attempts to prevent people who love each other from marrying.

Whether you agree with gay marriage or not, that should not be his primary focus in this state. And yet that's about the only thing that he is actively fighting.

I guess I should stop right here before I really get worked up and take this thread in a whole other direction.

Bottom line - I don't like the guy, can't wait until his term is over and I hope that he never gets elected President.

I didn't take it as a slam at all.
There's actually a pretty sizable Republican contigency in MA. My parents' hometown (not the city they live in- the next town over) is actually quite conservative.

If I've learned anything politically is that you can't judge a state by its elected officials (at least not in the past 10yrs). It's become less about who's the most qualified and who speaks for the people and more about the old boy network, who's got the most money to grease the most palms, and who is the lesser of two evils.
I might live in another state but I'm only a couple of miles from the MA border where all of my family is so I'm still up on the local politics.

About the educational policy of Romney - I only know the teacher unions despise him. he's big on vouchers, teacher evaluations, merit raises, and giving illegal immigrants access to cheap higher education (which I completely oppose).
He really is extremely ineffectual and has only really done a half hearted attempt to govern the Commonwealth and when he's here it's all about fighting gay marriage, the teacher unions, and pushing for the death penalty.

I was driven from Massachusetts because I can't afford it. Not like I can afford RI any better though. Massachusetts has had over a decade of really bad leadership (actually several decades but I liked Gov Weld) and something really needs to be done to turn things around.
