MA - Governor Romney??

The education system in the state has decreased steadily since he's been in office.
So the teachers just decided to start teaching badly when he became governor?

(I wouldn't put it past the teachers union - they are more concerned about the employment of adults than the education of children. And don't give me any crap about amount of spending.)

Oh and please note my comment about crappy Republican governors wasn't meant as a slam to the Republican party. MA seems to be still afraid if they vote for a Democrat governor they're going to resurrect Dukakis ;)

Pretty boy, slick, well spoken - polished till he shines like a new penny. Every inch the politician.

So noted and I appreciate that. Its just that this had been bottled up and I decided to pop the cork and let her rip. I feel much better now and don't want to start something...just had to vent.

Did you keep reading my post beyond that sentence? I know he's not sitting in a classroom running things, but shouldn't he be focusing some energy on improving education in the state and not allowing it to continue to slide into oblivion?

In my hometown, when I was in high school and for several years after, our public school system was one of the top schools in the state. Now, it's one of the worst. And that's because funding has been so drastically cut and the school is outdated. They do not have the updated technology necessary to provide a better education to the students. The quality of the teachers has not decreased, but they don't have the necessary equipment to teach today's kids and because of that, they are falling behind.

Show me something, anything that he's done to improve education in this state.

Oh believe me I understand. It's frustrating how much of a joke many elected officials have become. It's like I need to close my eyes and pick one when I vote now because it really doesn't matter who I vote for. Which makes me sad :(

To get back to the original subject, it will be interesting to hear how Romney comes across to people not from around here - on both sides of the political spectrum.

Jenn, here from the heartland, namely Iowa and again, I am a Republican...Gov. Romney is "attractive" to alot of us. Personally, I have been watching his politics for a while now and probably ever since the Olympics.

Just another reason I was glad to leave Massachusetts. Mitt who? :confused3

Least any of you think I'm republican bashing, I like Jeb! He's here, he seems to listen and, in the words of Simon Cowell, he's interesting. :rotfl:

Every time I see Romney, I think Stepford Wives. :dance3:

He's attractive, well spoken and most importantly he is not a raving liberal or a nut job Republican. On the whole, I would say he is a moderate Republican.
Fiscally conservative and moral, but not a bible thumper.

I like him, but as someone mentioned, we are afraid of Democrat Governors in MA, because the Democratic legislature is way out of control it could make you cry.

Bottom line: you will be impressed. I really think Mitt has an incredible chance to be on the national GOP ticket in 2008.

Actually, I know the reason I'm afraid to vote for a Democratic Governor is because I'd like to keep some semblance of balance in this state. With the House and Senate around 90% Democratic, I don't want to know what it would be like without a Republican in the corner office to offset the legislature. There's a reason we're a two-party system.

Well I vote for who's platform I like and not based on their political affiliation.
That said, I've worked in MA politics (mostly Republican campaigns actually) for quite a few years and I do know many many people that will not vote for a Democrat governor because they don't want go back to the Dukakis regime. I'm saying this matter of factly with no opinion behind it.

Republican/Democrat - it doesn't matter anymore. It's the same grandstanding and palm greasing no matter what side of the coin the legislators are on. MA (and RI and I'm sure other states as well) need fresh faces and new ideas- I don't care what party they belong to.

If he were head of state, he could be accused of treason. I find his political grandstanding at the expense of the people who elected him disgusting. I have no respect for Mit Romney.

arminnie--I would be VERY interested to hear your impressions after dinner tonight. Really.

I have a cousin who worked for him at Bain who also contends that he is the smartest person he's ever met. Now my cousin is no slouch, he's the 'genius' of the family, perfect SATs, well rounded, undergrad and MBA from Harvard.

That said, I also dislike how much time he's had as an absentee govenor, and it was apparent, almost from the moment he was elected, that this was just a weigh point on his way to 1600 Pennsylvania Ave.

As a person - probably a pretty good guy. Did a nice job with the Olympics.

As governor - has spent much of his term traveling around the country bad mouthing Massachusetts. When he is in state, he tends to support bills such as the death penalty that are unpopular within the state (zero chance getting enacted) but make him look (he thinks) to folks outside the state. On the other hand, he really hasn't caused any harm, isn't a crook, etc. which puts him above a whole lot of politicians out there.

This sums it up perfectly. It would be nice to have a governor who was actually interested in sticking around and helping the state instead of using the office as an immediate platform for national ambitions.

Like him. Hope he decides to run for Pres next go round.

I'll have to agree with a lot here...good looking, incredibly smart, uneffective due to his absences. I'm sure that if he were to put his mind to it, he could be an effective leader....however, he's never here. My dh is on our town's governing board and was a registered Republican, but has changed basically to an independent...same as me (but I was a Democrat). He (dh) serves on this board with a woman who worked on Romney's campaign and it landed her a nice job in the State House. Dh doesn't have an great love of our governor...again, wishes he stayed here long enough to make a difference. My problem??? I don't see and decent candidates for change when he's gone!!!

Hate the guy and his politics. Scum sucking opportunist carpetbagger. If he had any interest in the state, it might be different.

And I'm sorry, but he believes six impossible things before breakfast every day, so I don't think he's all that smart.

Wellesley Princess - are you a student at Wellesley? That is such a beautiful campus. One of my Stanford classmates lives in Wellesley, and I love it.

Yep. Sorry to hear about Newcomb. We have a couple of students that transfered from there, also Tulane, & Spellman.

ETA: The pic in my sig is from the Governor's Holiday Ball in Decemember.

Personally, I like him, and most of his politics. :thumbsup2

And the Massachusetts "bashing" on his part should be perfectly understandable with the democrat obstructionists we have and the appointed for life judges legislating from the bench; ignoring manditory sentencing, etc.

It's a 3 branch government, with 2 branches dedicating themselves to opposing one man, instead of improving things for the citizens. No wonder he can't get anything worthwhile passed.

Yep, that's exactly how it works. Every day our legislators and judges wake up asking themselves, "how can we stick it to Mitt today"?
