If one does NOT go to Atlantis, where is the best place for lunch? Any suggestions with prices? :confused3

Or is it better to just head back to the ship?

We sail 6/26. I'm planning the van tour of the city, then returning to the ship for lunch. I'm taking our own water bottles in case we need sips of something while we're off. We're not eating or drinking anything from Nassau (unless it's a canned Dr. Pepper!!!) I'm not taking any chances with my sensitive stomach.

This is what I always do, on any cruise. I head out as early as I can, and walk back to the ship for lunch. The food is already paid for, and I'm getting some much needed excercise to help work off the extra lbs. I will have gained. :teeth:

We ate twice out in Nassau while we were there.

First..for lunch we ate at Conch Fritters. The menu is moderately priced and the food is fantastic. It is a block or so away from the straw market..across from a very nice hotel. Easily walked to. It is on the second floor, big open air windows, great for people watching. We (hubby, myself and daughter) loved it and can definately recommend it.

Then, when we were heading back to the ship for our Palo reservation, we noticed a filipino restaurant..right to the left of the straw market, oceanside.
Well, we love filipino food, especially lumpia so we stopped in and ordered two batches. It was made fresh while we waited and it was absolutely wonderful.

There is also a place called graycliff (like the great cigar), we found out about this after we returned. Next time we will look for it.

There is also a hard rock cafe and a senor frogs. Plenty of options..don't be afraid to ask the locals for advice on where to go. That is how we found Conch Fritters, from our tour guide (we had done the two hour historical city tour right when the ship docked..also fantastic by the way).

Just go and have a blast..why would you want to eat on the ship..when you can explore a new place.

Ooooh, I love lumpia! I'll keep my eyes open for this one.

Is the water potable in Nassau or is it better to stick to bottled water? :confused3

We always went back to the ship for lunch.

Have a wonderful cruise and enjoy Nassau.

We always keep bottled water with us, even at WDW. Just better than tap water no matter where you are.

Well, I'm a big fan of bottled water anyhow but DH thinks I'm silly. That's fine. He can deal with the gut cooties while I enjoy my cruise! :earboy2: :cool1:

LUMPIA!!!!!
While living in CA I had some Filipino friends and I sure do miss the Lumpia :goodvibes
I can't wait to have some again!

Corryn...definately try the Lumpia then..it was top notch for sure.

Sorry, whats lumpia?. Sounds like something catch and need antibiotics to cure-lol. Nassau is a bit on the grungy side for me. We went to a subway shop to use the bathroom. Hard to tell where the bathroom ended and the sandwich shop started. I stick to the ship for lunch. Exploring foods in Nassau can be hazardous to your health IMHO.
Turbos!

On Paradise Island, I would recommend going to the Hurricane Hole under the bridge for some local ambience.

Back near the ship, I would recommend a place called Cafe Skans just next to the straw market on Bay Street. It's a favorite spot for the locals, and there's no "tourist" atmosphere in there -- just a great little diner with some of the best food you'll find in Nassau for a reasonable price.

What is typical fare at Cafe Skans? I am really unfamiliar with Bahaman cuisine. Do they have a typical cuisine?

Lumpia is kind of like a small eggroll. The kind we get is filled with a meat filling, wrapped in a very thin skin and fried, then served with a great sweet sauce.

Funny; I've been to the Bahamas several times and I can't tell you what typical fare is, except that most places that cater to tourists will offer ceviche, fresh fish, conch fritters, etc. All I know is that Cafe Skans is a pleasant little diner frequented by many locals, as well as tourists who place more of a premium on good stick-to-your-ribs food than a touristy atmosphere. Cafe Skans has what I would call typical diner food, except they also specialize in Greek fare like Gyros and Greek salads.

Again, I don't want to mislead you. If you're on vacation in the Bahamas, it's reasonable to want to go do someplace with a lot of nautical decor or funky junkanoo motifs, etc. Cafe Skans has none of that. Just a group of hardworking staff cranking out great diner food at (for Nassau) reasonable prices for a loyal group of customers and some savvy tourists. In other words, I'd go there if my focus was more on hunger than atmosphere.

Whatever you decide, have fun and good luck!

DH and I are pretty adventurous and appreciate local color. If the food is good, the ambiance won't frighten us off!! Thanks for all the great info!
