Lump on DDs neck

My DD(12) had tonsilitis 5 weeks ago, one side of her tonsils has not gone down (but not sore) and a lump is visible on that side of her neck with a new lump further to the side.Just wondered if any ideas what it could be, as she has only just shown me.
Shes perfectly healthy but im taking her to docs tomorrow to be safe.

Is it sort of behind her ear? When my daughter had mono, the nodes behind her ears swelled up and made her look like she had a really thick neck.

More likely, it could be a localized infection. My husband got scratched by a cat once, on his face, and it made one of his lymph nodes on his neck swell up. Just one - apparently it was a reaction to the nasty stuff in the cat's claws.

My best guess would be that the tonsillectomy isn't healing right, and there's an infection brewing. Glad you're taking her in! (And I'd keep an eye out for fever.)

Maybe swollen lymph nodes. They are bean shaped glands and will sometimes swell when there's an infection. It can take weeks to go back down. I did see somewhere that 10-12 year olds have larger than normal lymph nodes, also. That's probably all it is, but still a good idea to go to the doc and make sure all is cleared.

I had that happen as a child. I ended up on 2 rounds of antibiotics, then it went away. They may do some bloodwork on her just to make sure it's nothing, like they did on me.

Insist on labwork, in order to rule anything else out.

Swollen lymph nodes can take a very long time to go down - weeks or months.

It's probably swollen lymph nodes, but it would be a good thing to have it checked out since it's been going on for 5 weeks.

My daughter had the same thing a few years ago. We took her to a ear, nose and throat doctor. they were swollen lymph nodes, but still did not go down after several weeks. The doctor decided she would have to have her tonsils removed. She has been fine since.

Thanks for the replies.Doctor thinks the swollen neck might be a lingering infection from the tonsilitis, so has put her on a course of penicillin and asked to see her in a week. He said its quite common for the glands to take a long time to go down but not so much the actual tonsils. One thing he did do though was to shine a light on her swollen neck to "confirm the diognosis"

If it doesn't get better in a week I would ask them to take a biopsy of it.

Agreed, give it another week then take her back (or to a different physician) if they haven't gone down. I'm sorry, but I know two children who had a more serious dx that started with a swollen lymph node. No reason they can't do some basic blood work on your dd and make sure.
