Luggage size on Virgin flights

Just a quick question about luggage size for economy on Virgin.

We can't decide what size suitcases to bring with us, so was just wondering what everyone else brings?

There are only 2 of us and we have one 23kg bag each but possibly adding an extra bag for the return flight just incase. We've seen some good and light 73cm ones but also some good 81cm ones but would they be a bit too big? We're going for 2 weeks but we'll probably just wash some of our clothes so we'll probably only have about a week worth of clothes.

If you are renting a car then rather than buying a spare 'just incase' suitcase in the UK why don't you wait until you are over there and if it looks like you will need another case then buy one at the many outlets that sells luggage.

Prices are quiet reasonable and to get a rough guide check out and search through the Walmart Store at....
http://www.walmart.com/cp/luggage/444253

We just manage with one checked case each and Virgins limits are: - dimensions per bag, up to 90 x 75 x 43cm and a maximum of 23kg.

Hand baggage can be up to a maximum size of 23 x 36 x 56 cm but with a maximum weight of 6kg, so not a lot but we've never been asked to have it weighed and it's always overweight on the way home. So also think about taking the maximum sized hand baggage.

Has anyone every had their hand luggage weighed on Virgin and if so was is on the outward or homeward flight or both?

Yeh we were planning on paying for the extra for the return flight only and getting a bag there or getting a really light holdall and squishing it into one of our suitcases or hand luggage on the way over lol. It's only £32 to pay for an extra bag one way and I'd rather pay that before we go then pay loads for the 2 free bags going over weight or pay for an extra bag at the airport which costs more than doing it in advance

I'm not 100% sure on this but you might be able to pay for your extra bag, (that is if you need one) while you are over in the States by either purchasing extra baggage through "Manage my Flights" on the Virgin web site, or if checking in on line; just need your booking/e-ticket number and enter details at https://www.virgin-atlantic.com/en/gb/manageyourflights/updatebooking/index.jsp

It will cost $48 as I believe you pay in US dollars so about £30.

Hopefully others might have already tried this and can verify or not?

If you have Internet access you can add the extra bag 'in advance' whilst you are there, we added ours the day before we flew home in February. We were however disappointed at the price/choice of bags in Walmart and the one we bought had a big hole in it when we got back home!

Any recommendations on what brands are good? We want something light weight obviously but not ridiculously expensive lol.

We have never had hand luggage weighed either. We did see someone being made to check theirs in, but his looked to be more because of the size than anything else.

We picked 2 cheap ones up at Walmart this year for around $40, can't remember the brand but they were pretty light.

the only time I've ever had my hand luggage weighed was on a Thomas Cook flight to Canada. Virgin have asked to see it before now, but as we tend to travel light(ish) no one has ever weighed it! (and by light I mean something that fits a full size pillow, a complete change of clothes and all my bits and pieces on the way home!).

We have had our hand luggage weighed every time with virgin we must look suspicious!:rotfl2:
