OK, it's been forever since I've flown. Do we really need these? DH thinks if someone really wants to get into your stuff they will, locks or not, but they will help keep the zippers closed so your stuff doesn't fall out. Any opinions on this?

Also can anyone make any recomendations on which kind to buy?

Thanks

if you feel the need, use cable ties.:)

Much cheaper, and if TSA really needs to get in, no worries about busted locks:)

Put the extra in the outside pocket of your suitcase, along with a pair of the baby nail clippers (no file)

HTH!!

If you buy locks make sure they are TSA approved. They can open them to inspect your luggage. Also, there has NEVER been a luggage lock that can't be defeated. The best defense is NOT to put valuables in the checked bags.

In December when we traveled they asked me to unlock our luggage when we checked in. I unlocked it and left the lock open and dangling from the zipper tab. They still cut the tab completly off and left me with a $300.00 suitcase that has no tab and the rest of the metal zipper portion warped. I was not happy.

same case with my nephew, sometimes I thought it may be someone just could stand to see an expensive suitcase.

No, they don't look... if there is a lock on there they assume it's locked and do this. So.. don't put a lock on that's not TSA approved.

I always use cable ties.... I found that its a ramdom check, some of ours get open, some doesn't....

We use cable ties. very cheap! I am not 100% positive but I think that after our bags were checked they put another tie on.

No they never put them back on mine.

Oh and if you use them, make sure you remember you'll need to get them off when you get there LOL, no sissors on carry-on, maybe ask at the front desk to borrow some while you are checking in...

Like someone else just posted, if there's anything THAT valuable in your luggage that you feel the need to lock it away, get it out of there and pack it in your carry-on! Better safe than sorry.

LOL I consider everything in my bag valuable! I would hate to lose anything in there... I am on vacation after all. Plus its not so much that, I consider it "staying zipped closed" as well. They do throw those bags around, ya know...

I use cable ties. When my bag has been searched, they have replaced my cable tie for me. No, it doesn't prevent theft, but keeps the zipper closed.

I use TSA locks without a problem. TSA personnel seemed very pleased that I use the locks. I have had my luggage searched, and they put the locks back on. Cable ties are not replaced. I have seen luggage come back unazipped and clothes everywhere!

I use the locks to keep the zippers closed, NOT for security!

I use the plastic cable/zip ties. We travel a lot and I've only had one bag opened. They re-tied it with a twist tie and stuck a TSA sticker on it that said something like, "This bag has been examined in a random luggage check". No big deal.

To cut the ties, I put a pair of blunt grade-school scissors in the outer pocket of a suitcase. They've never been a problem.

that they are TSA approved. Just make sure the package says that. They are sold at a lot of places now. Target has them. They are a regular looking lock that only TSA can access. (At least that is the idea!)
