Okay --- I can bake, but CANNOT decorate that well, yes, I can frost a cake, but my son is having a 21st birthday party and I'd like to make a Luau/Tiki/Hawaiian shirt cake to match his Luau party.

Yes, I know that I can buy a cake! LOL :) but wanted to make something for him, make it special.

With that said, I need HELP!! :)

I've googled and everything looks very very hard! Lots of fondant, etc..

Any ideas for me?? :)

My husband did one with regular frosting(colored). I had a platter with a face on it and he just free handed one. He used the round tip that was fat and just drew the face, hat and something else onto the top of the frosted cake. I don't have a digital pic to upload infact I'm not even sure where those bday pics are...... I should scrap that since I just saw luau paper in the stack I was sorting......

good luck what ever you do he'll love.

Head out to Party City, the Dollar Store, etc and see what they have (Party City has a lot of luau/tiki stuff. You can bake a cake & frost with tropical color icing (easy to tint white icing or buy pink icing, etc) and use a store bought cutout as the decoration - just lay it on top. You just lift it off and serve the cake as usual. I know Party City has some small things you can stick on the cake (plastic decorations) that would go with your theme. You can also use a silk lei and edge the cake or cut the flowers off and decorate with them. Try Wilton cake pans (Michael's, Hobby Lobby, Jo Anne's all sell them as well as Target & WalMart) to see what you can find (they usually come with decorating ideas as well).

I googled Hawaiian/Tiki party cakes and found a bunch that looked easy . Use your imagination, it doesn't have to be perfect just made with love. Good luck & let us know what you decide. :wave2:

Yes I saw things at Party City. I love the silk leis ideas :-)

I wish I was better at using a bag and tip :-)

I wanted to make an Hawaiian shirt someone gave me a large pan to use.

Wouldnt the luau sign stick to the frosting when taken off. Going to go to our local candy store and see what they have.

Use graham crumbs for beach - i was thinking!!

1/2 sheet cake is around 60 bux here in NY with a filling.

I have no clue how to use chocolate pudding as a filling. But could try :-)

Does it have to be refrigerated with pudding inside?

You could put a piece of saran wrap under the decoration so it doesn't stick.
Do you have a ShopRite or Stop & Shop near you? 1/2 sheet filled isn't that bad (but your tax may be more than here in my part of NY). What about BJ's, Sam's or Costco? They have great bakeries as well

If you go with pudding use instant (a few boxes) and do not add all the milk so it's a bit thicker and yes you would have to refrigerate it or it will spoil.

Wouldn't it still stick with saran wrap!

I do have BJs and yeah, they are okay --- we have a great bakery here and it's about 64.00 for a 1/2 sheet, they don't do 1/4.

I was just looking to be creative, lmao, but.... that's not happening.

I figured it would be a nice gesture to make his 21st birthday cake.

Okay - less milk... someone lent me a big pan, was going to make it - she said it requires 3 boxes of cake mix... wowsers!!

:joker:

I tend to wing it when decorating, I may not be doing it right but I find a way :)

To make a Hawaiian shirt I would cut the shirt shape out of the cake sheet and then lay fondant over it and trim that to the same shape as the shirt, so you don't have the fondant down the sides (I would find it hard to get that smooth looking). I would then frost the sides the same colour as the shirt fondant.

Find an outline of an Hawaiian flower and print in two sizes. Use that as a template to cut out of different coloured fondant. stick the flowers onto the shirt. Use an icing pen to create details like the collar etc.

Did that make sense?

Love the idea of graham crackers for sand, I think that would work.

Good luck!
